Abstract

We propose a theoretical scheme to speed up adiabatic population transfer in a Josephson artificial qutrit by transitionless quantum driving. At a magic working point, an effective three-level subsystem can be chosen to constitute our qutrit. With Stokes and pump driving, adiabatic population transfer can be achieved in the qutrit by means of stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. Assisted by a counter-diabatic driving, the adiabatic population transfer can be sped up drastically with accessible parameters. Moreover, the accelerated operation is flexibly reversible and highly robust against decoherence effects. Thanks to these distinctive advantages, the present protocol could offer a promising avenue for optimal coherent operations in Josephson quantum circuits.

Fast and robust population transfer with a Josephson qutrit via shortcut to adiabaticity

Zhi‐Bo Feng, Xiao-Jing Lu, Run‐Ying Yan +1 more

We propose an effective scheme to implement fast and robust population transfer with a Josephson qutrit via shortcut to adiabaticity. Facilitated by the level-transition rule, a Λ-configuration resonant interaction can be realized between microwave drivings and the qutrit with sufficient level anharmonicity, from which we perform the reversible population transfers via invariant-based shortcut. Compared with the detuned drivings, the utilized resonant drivings shorten the transfer times significantly. Further analysis of the dependence of transfer time on Rabi couplings is helpful to experimental investigations. Thanks to the accelerated process, transfer operation is highly insensitive to noise effects. Thus the protocol could provide a promising avenue to experimentally perform fast and robust quantum operations on Josephson artificial atoms.

Speeding up the Generation of Entangled State between a Superconducting Qubit and Cavity Photons via Counterdiabatic Driving

Run‐Ying Yan, Zhi‐Bo Feng, Ming Li +2 more

Abstract Optimal generation of entangled states is of critical significance for robust quantum information processing. An effective scheme is presented for speeding up the generation of an entangled state between a superconducting qubit and microwave photons via counterdiabatic driving. At a magic bias point, the first three levels of a charge‐phase quantum circuit constitute an effective qutrit. An entangled state based on adiabatic population transfer is first achieved. By the technique of shortcuts to adiabaticity, a counterdiabatic driving is applied to the qutrit, which then accelerates the entanglement generation significantly. Moreover, with the accessible decoherence rates, the rapid operations in a shortcut way are highly robust when compared with adiabatic manipulations. The scheme could offer a promising approach toward optimal preparation of entangled states with superconducting artificial atoms in circuit quantum electrodynamics, experimentally.

Population Transfer in a Nitrogen-Vacancy Spin Qutrit via Shortcuts to Adiabaticity with Simplified Drivings

Run‐Ying Yan, Zhi‐Bo Feng

Optimal control of quantum system is significant for information science and technology. Here, an efficient scheme is proposed for implementing fast population transfer in a spin qutrit of nitrogen-vacancy center via shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) with simplified drivings. At two-photon resonance, a $$\Lambda $$ -configuration interaction between the spin qutrit and driving fields can be obtained effectively. By the invariant-based STA, the reversible population transfer can be realized using the Rabi pulses with sine and cosine waveforms. Compared with the superadiabatic transitionless driving, the present pulses in our strategy become simplified technically, contributing to reduce the error effect of control parameter deviations. Moreover, the high-fidelity quantum operations can be performed with the accessible decoherence rates. The protocol could offer an optimized avenue towards the STA-based quantum control of spin qutrit experimentally.

Shortcuts to adiabaticity in five-level systems using counter-diabatic driving and time-rescaling optimization

Jiahui Zhang, Wenyuan Wang, Fuquan Dou

Shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) is a common protocol to realize high-fidelity and robust quantum control in various quantum systems. To date, STA has been widely applied in two- and three-level systems, whereas designing feasible strategies to achieve perfect quantum state engineering in multi-level systems still remains a challenging task. Here, we propose to use counterdiabatic (CD) driving and time-rescaling (TR) methods to construct multi-state stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage protocols for realizing robust and fast population transfer in chainwise-connected five-state systems. The first protocol is implemented by initially reducing the original five-state system to an equivalent two-state counterpart, and then designing the corresponding driving field by combining CD driving and unitary transformation. Further, we introduce the TR method to optimize the first protocol and thus offers an alternative solution. Numerical calculations show that both protocols can achieve complete population transfer and effectively suppress transient populations of all intermediate states. Compared with the first protocol, the optimized second exhibits better performance within a shorter evolution time.

Shortcut to adiabatic population transfer in quantum three-level systems: Effective two-level problems and feasible counterdiabatic driving

Yichao Li, Xi Chen

Shortcuts to adiabaticity in various quantum systems have attracted much attention with their wide applications in quantum information processing and quantum control. In this paper, we concentrate on a stimulated Raman shortcut-to-adiabatic passage in quantum three-level systems. To implement counterdiabatic driving but without additional coupling, we first reduce the quantum three-level systems to effective two-level problems at large intermediate-level detuning, or on resonance, apply counterdiabatic driving along with the unitary transformation and eventually modify the pump and Stokes pulses for achieving fast and high-fidelity population transfer. The required laser intensity and stability against parameter variation are further discussed, to demonstrate the advantage of shortcuts to adiabaticity.

Coherent population transfer with polariton states in circuit QED

Madan Mohan Mahana, Sankar Davuluri, Tarak Nath Dey

The stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) allows selective, coherent population transfer in a three-level quantum system by the adiabatic control of two suitably chosen envelopes and delayed laser pulses. However, the long operation time involved with the adiabatic protocols makes them more susceptible to decay and decoherence. A shortcut-to-adiabaticity technique, namely, counterdiabatic driving (CD), suppresses the decoherence-induced loss by speeding up the STIRAP process, thereby enhancing the efficiency and fidelity of population transfer. The superadiabatic STIRAP (saSTIRAP) method requires the application of a shortcut drive or CD pulse, which couples the coherently trapped states in a three-level quantum system. Hence, the closed-loop $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ system consisting of all electric dipole-allowed transitions is an essential requirement for saSTIRAP, which is rarely admissible in a natural atom. This paper theoretically investigates an experimentally feasible model for implementing saSTIRAP using a closed-loop $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ system with doubly dressed polariton states in a driven circuit QED system. We show a population transfer with efficiencies close to $80.75%$ and $98.10%$ with fidelities of $89.86%$ and $99.04%$ for the resonant STIRAP and saSTIRAP protocols, respectively, with experimentally feasible parameters. The efficiency of the population transfer can be further increased by improving the coherence times of the cavity and the transmon qubit. This work may be useful in designing fast, efficient quantum gates for applications in quantum technologies.
