Circular dichroism of RbHe and RbN 2 molecules

Brian Lancor, Earl Babcock, Robert Wyllie +1 more

We present measurements of the circular dichroism of optically pumped Rb vapor near the ${D}_{1}$ resonance line. Collisions with the buffer gases $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ and ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}$ reduce the transparency of the vapor, even when fully polarized. We use two methods to measure this effect, show that the He results can be understood from RbHe potential curves, and show how this effect conspires with the spectral profile of the optical pumping light to increase the laser power demands for optical pumping of very optically thick samples.

Sub-Doppler features of optical processes in the Rb extremely thin cell filled with an additional buffer gas.

David G. Sarkisyan, G. Hakhumyan, Armen D. Sargsyan +2 more

Comparison of the resonant absorption and fluorescence in the extremely thin cell (ETC) filled with pure Rb with another one filled with Rb and Neon gas with the pressures 6 Torr and 20 Torr is provided. The effect of the collapse and revival of Dicke-type narrowing is still observable for the thickness L=λ/2, and L=λ, where λ is a resonant laser wavelength 794 nm (D1 line of the Rb), i.e. the spectra of the resonant absorption and fluorescence demonstrate the sub-Doppler narrowing for the thickness L=λ/2 and broadening for the thickness L=λ. It is important to note, that in an ordinary Rb cell with the thickness L in the range of 1mm- 10 cm filled with buffer gas, with a pressure higher than 1 Torr in the Saturation Absorption scheme, any sub-Doppler features are absent. For L= λ the so called velocity selective optical pumping (VSOP) resonance located at the atomic transition is still observable when Ne pressure is 6 Torr , while the linewidth is increased by 4 times in comparison with that obtained in the pure Rb ETC. This VSOP resonance is wash out when Ne pressure is 20 Torr. It is demonstrated that use of the fluorescence spectra at L=λ/2 allows one to use the ETC for the buffer gas pressure measurement. Comparison with the theory is presented.

Effect of Spatial Homogeneity of Spin Polarization on Magnetic Field Response of an Optically Pumped Atomic Magnetometer Using a Hybrid Cell of K and Rb Atoms

Yosuke Ito, Hiroyuki Ohnishi, Keigo Kamada +1 more

We measured the spatial homogeneity of spin polarization, which is directly related to the sensitivity and magnetic linewidth of an optically pumped atomic magnetometer with a hybrid cell of K and Rb atoms. This was done by changing the position of the probe beam. Furthermore, for comparison, we also measured the sensitivity and magnetic linewidth of atomic magnetometers with single K and single Rb cells, and found that optically thick atoms were spin polarized homogeneously with the hybrid cell. Optically thin alkali metal vapor can be spin polarized homogeneously, and the spin polarization transfers to an optically thick alkali metal vapor. An atomic magnetometer with the hybrid cell was found to be more effective in realizing simultaneous signal measurements at different locations with the uniform sensitivity and magnetic linewidth.
