Abstract

The brief overview of atom interferometers development for new generation of inertial sensitive elements on the de Broglie waves is presented. The transmission functions of atom interferometers (dependence of phase differences of counter propagating waves of interferometers from external factors (absolute rotation and acceleration of interferometer) and internal factors (ideology of construction of different types of atom interferometers)) are also discussed. The recommendations on elaboration of previously known transmission functions of atom interferometers are provided for the purpose of the development of the accurate error models of gyroscopes on de Broglie waves.

High-sensitivity rotation sensing with atom interferometers using Aharonov-Bohm effect

Meri Özcan

In recent years there has been significant activity in research and development of high sensitivity accelerometers and gyroscopes using atom interferometers. In these devices, a fringe shift in the interference of atom de Broglie waves indicates the rotation rate of the interferometer relative to an inertial frame of reference. In both optical and atomic conventional Sagnac interferometers, the resultant phase difference due to rotation is independent of the wave velocity. However, we show that if an atom interforemeter is enclosed in a Faraday cage which is at some potential, the phase difference of the counter-propagating waves is proportional to the inverse square of the particle velocity and it is proportional to the applied potential. This is due to Aharonov-Bohm effect and it can be used to increase the rotation sensitivity of atom interferometers.

In this paper, we present a brief overview of atom interferometry. This field of research has developed very rapidly since 1991. Atom and light wave interferometers present some similarities but there are very important differences in the tools used to manipulate these two types of waves. Moreover, the sensitivity of atomic waves and light waves to their environment is very different. Atom interferometry has already been used for a large variety of studies: measurements of atomic properties and of inertial effects (accelerations and rotations), new access to some fundamental constants, observation of quantum decoherence, etc. We review the techniques used for coherent manipulation of atomic waves and the main applications of atom interferometers.

High accuracy inertial measurement based on atom interferometer

Zhao Chang-shan

The atom interferometer was reviewed and its recent development and progress were reported. The interferometer, based on the theory of laser cooling, trapping and manipulation of atom, utilizes the atomic particles as free fall test masses to measure the experienced inertial force of the apparatus. Many tests show that the novel inertial sensors can measure the rotation and acceleration of apparatus with unprecedented sensitivity and precision, and distinguish them by counter-propagating beams of atoms. The atom interferometer can get extensive application in inertial measurement based on them due to its compactness and long-term stability.

Atom interferometers

Summary form only given.Atom interferometers have opened up new areas of fundamental and applied research. As well known from photon optics, multiple-beam interferometers offer an increased sensitivity on the relative phases between interfering waves. Very recently, first atomic multiple-beam interferometers were realized. These concepts are based on an atomic beam that is spatially split into coherent partial de Broglie waves, where the number of interfering waves is determined by the internal atomic multi-level scheme. We report on time-domain atomic interferometry within a two-level system.
