Abstract

By means of the density matrixs in forms of Bloch equations which are coupled with Maxwell equations, we treated propagation effect of coherent pulse in the strong loss medium. Both pulse evolution and its influence on the medium have been studied. We observed the special transient coherent phenomena of pulse in the strong loss medium which include the stepwise decreasing of pulse area and periodic oscillation of number of spatial ionized particles.

COHERENT TWO-PHOTON PULSE PROPAGATION THROUGH A COHERENTLY PREPARED MEDIUM

Amitabh Joshi

Propagation of pulses through a medium comprising of coherently prepared two-level atoms undergoing two-photon transition has been studied using Maxwell–Bloch equations. The solution of the electromagnetic field envelopes has been obtained under various conditions and the effect of initial atomic coherence is clearly brought out in these solutions.

Coherent transient effect in Raman pulse propagation

Naohiro Tanno, Tsukasa Shirahata, Kenichi Yokoto +1 more

In this paper we develop a theoretical analysis which describes a coherent transient effect of two entering pulses---one laser and one Stokes---in a Raman-active medium. The field (Maxwell) and atomic (Schr\"odinger, density-matrix representation) equations are coupled in a self-consistent manner in time and space by virtue of the resultant second-order nonlinear macroscopic polarizations at the two frequencies. This treatment is accomplished under the circumstances where atomic coherence plays a predominant role. The equations derived here may be referred to as "Raman Bloch-Maxwell equations." The resultant equations yield a new aspect of transient stimulated Raman scattering and thus coherent Raman propagation. The transient-pulse behavior may be understood as self-induced modulation of coherent amplification and absorption. The self-induced modulation for the step-function input pulse is described by a combination of Jacobian elliptic functions depending on the input intensity. Computer calculations of transient-pulse evolution reveal interesting pulse breakup phenomena with peak amplification, energy transmission, pulse advance or delay, and pulse-narrowing effects.

Effect of Atomic Density on Propagation and Spectral Property of Femtosecond Gaussian Pulses

Wang Zhendon

We investigate effect of atomic densities( N) on propagation and spectral property of femtosecond Gaussian pulses in a three-level Λ- type atomic medium by using numerical solution of full Maxwell-Bloch equations. It is shown that, for pulses with smaller area 2π,propagate in mediums with different N,pulse splitting does not occur and strength of spectral component near central frequency decreases considerably as N increases. For pulses with area 4π,pulse splitting could occur when pulses propagate in dilute medium with greater atomic density and in dense medium, and pulse spectral bandwidth and strength of spectral component with higher frequency increase with increasing of N in dilute medium. Spectrum broadening in dense medium is much smaller than that in dilute medium with greater atomic density. For pulses with larger area 8π,pulse splitting is similar to that of 4π pulses. Pulse spectral bandwidth and strength of spectral component with higher frequency increase monotonously with increasing of N. And spectrum broadening in dense medium is much larger than that in dilute medium with smaller atomic density.

A THEORY OF COHERENT PROPAGATION OF LIGHT WAVE IN SEMICONDUCTORS (Ⅲ)

GAN ZI-ZHAO, Guo-Zhen Yang, (1)北京大学物理系; (2)中国科学院物理研究所

This paper is the third part of a theory of the coherent propagation of light in semiconductors. Based on the previous papers (Ⅰ) and (Ⅱ), the Maxwell-Bloch equation describing the coherent propagation of light in semiconductors is derived; the equation is then used to discuss a number of possible effects of coherent propagation in both interband transitions and exciton transitions. In particular, the phenomena of self-induced transparency are analysed, and it is shown that the phenomena may occur in the above two transitions.
