Abstract

Based on the Bloch-Maxwell equation, the three-dimensional model for the double-pulse propagation in a two-level system was set up-The propagation of the double pulses with different areas has been described and compared to that of the single pulse-The pulse mergence has been found in the double-pulse propagation-

COHERENT TWO-PHOTON PULSE PROPAGATION THROUGH A COHERENTLY PREPARED MEDIUM

Amitabh Joshi

Propagation of pulses through a medium comprising of coherently prepared two-level atoms undergoing two-photon transition has been studied using Maxwell–Bloch equations. The solution of the electromagnetic field envelopes has been obtained under various conditions and the effect of initial atomic coherence is clearly brought out in these solutions.

THE PROPAGATION EFFECT OF COHERENT PULSE IN THE STRONG LOSS MEDIUM

JIANG MENG-HENG, LIN FU-CHENG, 中国科学院上海光学精密机械研究所,上海,201800

By means of the density matrixs in forms of Bloch equations which are coupled with Maxwell equations, we treated propagation effect of coherent pulse in the strong loss medium. Both pulse evolution and its influence on the medium have been studied. We observed the special transient coherent phenomena of pulse in the strong loss medium which include the stepwise decreasing of pulse area and periodic oscillation of number of spatial ionized particles.

SPECTRUM OF A FEW-CYCLE LASER PULSE PROPAGATING IN A TWO-LEVEL ATOM MEDIUM

肖健, 王中阳, 徐至展

The spectrum evolution of a few-cycle optical pulse in a resonant two-level atom medium is studied theoretically by using the full Maxwell-Bloch equations. On the propagating pulse, significantly much faster oscillation components separated with the main pulse appear due to strong self-phase modulation and pulse reshaping. In this case, ideal self-induced transparency cannot occur for a 2 pi pulse. The spectrum of the 4 pi pulse shows an evident oscillatory feature because of the continuum interference of the separate pulses. For larger pulse areas, continuum generation from near ultraviolet to infrared occurs.

Propagation effect of coherent optical pulses in dissipative two-level system

JIANG MENG-HENG, Lin Fucheng

By means of the Bloch equations coupled with Maxwell equations, we treated the propagation effect of coherent optical pulses in dissipative two-level system. In such system we observed the special transient coherent phenomena which include the stair-like decrease of pulse area and periodic spatial oscillation of the ionized particles.

Pulse Propagation Through a medium Consists of Two Three-Level Atoms

R. N. Rabea, M. A. El-Deberky, M. M. A. Ahmed

The coherent propagation of two optical short pulses through a resonant medium consisting of two three-level atoms in the configuration is investigated. A self-consisting analytical solution without steady state or adiabatic approximations is presented. The electric field in the model studied consists of two co-propagating plane waves, each of which is in near resonance with a transition in the absorber. The density matrix of two three level atoms is studied. Also, the reduced density matrices are stated. The present approach for the semiclassical treatment of resonant coherent interactions in three-level atoms represents a generalization of the Maxwell- Bloch equations for a two-level system. The Maxwell-Bloch equations reduced to the non-linear pendulum equation. The solution shows that the two pulses can propagate simultaneously without loss under some conditions about the pulses and the medium. The propagation of the two pulses through the medium without any constrains approves the self -induced transparency (SIT) phenomenon.

Numerical Method and Application for Optical Maxwell-Bloch-Equations in Inhomogeneously Broadened Medium

Cheng Li, Huarong Zhang, Xiangyang Yu

An accurate and effective numerical method is presented to solve the Maxwell-Bloch equations that are used to describe the optical pulse propagation and interaction with inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium. The convergence and stability of this numerical method are proved by comparing with the analytic solutions and area theorem derived under special condition. The simulations of arbitrary conditions is discussed by employing this method and analyze the pulse evolution for different detunings, relaxation times and inhomogeneously broadened linewidthes. The established numerical method provides a good way to have further study about the coherent interaction of short optical pulses with resonant mediums, and can be used to solve the corrections of Maxwell-Bloch equations.
