Controlling light with light

Lambertus Hesselink, Jack Feinberg, Gérald Roosen

The field of photorefractive physics and optics is mature and, although there is no significant commercial activity using photorefractive media, researchers in the field have had an extraordinary impact on many related areas of research and development. For example, in the late 1990s many of the telecom innovations and products were based on the interaction between light and matter. Examples include optical switches, filters, gratings, routers and light sources. The theory of multiple interacting beams of light inside a photosensitive medium, many of which were developed or further explored in photorefractive media, has found application in medicine, engineering, communication systems, displays and other photonics devices. On the occasions of the 30th anniversary of the theory of coupled wave analysis and the 10th anniversary of the meetings on Photorefractive Effects and Devices , it seemed appropriate to the meeting organizers of PR'07 to broaden the scope to include other related fields. The name of the meeting was changed to Controlling Light with Light: Photorefractive Effects, Photosensitivity, Fiber Gratings, Photonic Materials and More to attract a larger audience than traditionally would attend the more narrowly focused photorefractive meeting. To further disseminate the results of the 2007 meeting, Gerald Roosen proposed a special publication of original full research articles arising from key presentations at the meeting. The selection of papers in this Cluster Issue of Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics is the result of that initiative. We would like to thank all the authors for their contributions, the committee members for their valuable insight and efforts in helping to organize the meeting, and the Optical Society of America for their professional assistance throughout the preparation period of the meeting as well as during the three beautiful days in Lake Tahoe, CA.

Topical Meeting on Optical Bistability (OB3) held in Tuscon, Arizona on Dec 2-4, 1985.

Adolf W. Lohmann, Demetri Psaltis, Stanley Desmond Smith +2 more

The topical meeting on Optical Bistability provided an international interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of knowledge on the progress of various aspects of optical bistability and optical nonlinearities. The three day program addressed six key areas: 1) Optical bistability in various materials; physics and applications; optical logic gates; etalon and waveguide devices; 2) New schemes and models for optical bistability, including increasing absorption, polarization, crosstrapping bistability, and bistability with surface plasmons; 3) Transverse and longitudinal effects including diffusion, conduction, diffraction, and absorption; 4) Instabilities, noise, fluctuations, and optical chaos; 5) Optical nonlinearities and optical materials including organic, liquid crystal, and semiconductor and photorefractive materials; and 6) Optical computing including architecture, cascading problems, parallel operations, and associate memory phenomena. A total of 97 papers were presented during the three day meeting. Keywords: Symposia abstracts; Nonlinear optical materials; Optoelectronics; Nonlinear guided waves; Chaos and instabilities.

Persistant Spectral Hole-Burning: Photon-Gating and Fundamental Statistical Limits

W. E. Moerner

Abstract : Fundamental limits on frequency-domain optical storage using persistent spectral hole-burning follow from both the expected configuration of the storage system and from physical effects such as the photophysics of the light-induced reaction in the material, photon quantum (shot) noise, and statistical fluctuations in additive random quantities. When frequency-domain reading and writing in focused spots is considered, the large class of single-photon materials can be shown to have serious limitations from a single-to-noise point of view. This has stimulated interest in photon-grated material which effectively have a threshold in the writing process, controlled by a second light beam of a different color. Fundamental statistical limits on persistent spectral hole-burning can also be illustrated using recent measurements of statistical fine structure in solids. Other recent experiments in which the absorption spectrum of a single absorbing molecule in a solid was measured represent an extreme limit on persistent spectral hole-burning effects.

Persistent Spectral Hole Burning Materials for Time-and- Frequency-Domain Optical Memories and Signal Processing

R. L. Cone

Abstract : Optical materials for spectral hole burning and coherent transient applications were designed and evaluated, emphasizing relevance to devices including high performance memory, signal processing, high speed holographic recording and analysis, and optical switches, routers, and buffers. The ultimate limits on material performance set by atomic mechanisms were determined. The developed materials contained Eu3+, Pr3+, Tm3+, Tb3+, or Er3+ active ions in various oxide hosts. The first report was made of an Er3+ material for hole burning applications in 1.5 micron optical communications bands. Eight Er3+ materials for applications at 1.5 microns in optical routers and buffer memories were designed and characterized. A correlator' signal processing capability was demonstrated, and the first report was made of operation of a 1.5 micron packet header decoder for all-optimized optical packet switching in optical communications along optical fibers at 1531 nm. Eu3+:Y2SiO5 was optimized for use in 100 GByte ODRAM optical memory devices, considering Eu3+ concentration and temperature. Eight Tm3+ compounds for signal processing applications, such as true time delays for phased-array radar, at diode laser wavelengths near 795 nm were designed and characterized. Eight Tb3+ compounds for photon gated spectral hole burning were designed and characterized, and gated hole burning was observed in Tb3+:YAIO3.
