Abstract

The topical meeting on Optical Bistability provided an international interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of knowledge on the progress of various aspects of optical bistability and optical nonlinearities. The three day program addressed six key areas: 1) Optical bistability in various materials; physics and applications; optical logic gates; etalon and waveguide devices; 2) New schemes and models for optical bistability, including increasing absorption, polarization, crosstrapping bistability, and bistability with surface plasmons; 3) Transverse and longitudinal effects including diffusion, conduction, diffraction, and absorption; 4) Instabilities, noise, fluctuations, and optical chaos; 5) Optical nonlinearities and optical materials including organic, liquid crystal, and semiconductor and photorefractive materials; and 6) Optical computing including architecture, cascading problems, parallel operations, and associate memory phenomena. A total of 97 papers were presented during the three day meeting. Keywords: Symposia abstracts; Nonlinear optical materials; Optoelectronics; Nonlinear guided waves; Chaos and instabilities.

Optical bistability: towards all-optical devices

Eusebio Bernabéu, Pedro Martín Mejías, R Martínez-Herrer

The phenomenon of optical bistability is the object of increasing interest owing to its possibilities for important device applications. The object of this short review is to give a description of this current field either from its conceptual theoretical basis or from its applications on optical circuitry and computing. Contents include three sections devoted to optical instabilities, bistable materials and international programs on this topic.

The following topics are considered: laser and maser instabilities, classical and quantum noise, transverse effects, dynamics in optical bistability and nonlinear optical media, and methods of analysis in nonlinear dynamics. Particular papers are presented on multistability and chaos in a two-photon microscopic maser, quantum chaos in quantum optics, spatial chaos in bistable optical arrays, four-wave mixing and dynamics, and bifurcation problems in nonlinear optics.

Optical bistability, multistability, and instabilities in liquid crystals

Sergei M. Arakelyan

The physical aspects of the manifestation of optical bistability, instabilities, and stochasticity in strongly nonlinear media in the form of liquid crystals subjected to laser radiation fields are discussed. The stress is on experimental research. Optical bistability and multistability are considered for a number of light-induced effects in homogeneous and inhomogeneous liquid crystals. The special features of these effects in liquids crystals, associated with the field-induced structural phase transitions, are stressed and the concept of intrinsic (mirrorless) optical bistability is introduced. General nonlinear systems with optical bistability are considered. An analysis is made of instabilities and stochasticity manifested in experiments on light-induced reorientation of liquid crystals in the presence of fields of different origin, giving rise to oscillatory and chaotic processes in the case of self-modulation of the transmitted light.
