Abstract

Abstract We investigate the ground state phases of the two-component Bose–Einstein condensates with three-dimensional Weyl-type spin–orbit coupling (SOC) loaded in a cubic optical lattice. The single-particle lowest energy band exhibits one, two or four pairs of degenerate ground states depending on the configuration of the SOC. We find two types of the supersolid (SS) phases with the isotropic SOC, and the SS phases are signaled by the momentum peaks distribution. We also discuss the spin textures of the SS phases, the spin vectors consist alternatively of two sets of continuous textures at the even and the odd lattice sites.

Ground-state phases of a rotating spin-orbit–coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

Ji-Guo Wang, Liang-Liang Xu, Shi-Jie Yang

We study the ground-state phases of a two-dimensional rotating spin-orbit–coupled Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in a one-dimensional spin-dependent optical lattice. In the absence of rotation, the system undergoes a phase transition from the stripe phase to the supersolid phase gradually for weak spin-orbit coupling strength and directly for strong spin-orbit coupling strength as the depth of the optical lattice increases. With increasing the rotation strength, the stripe phase transforms to the ringlike state, and the domain number of the ringlike state increases when the Bose-Einstein condensate is in the weak depth of the optical lattice. The supersolid phase transforms to the phase with a single domain of a vortex line for small rotation strength, and alternating vortex lines along the x -direction appear for large rotation strength when the Bose-Einstein condensate is in the strong depth of the optical lattice. The spin textures of the ground-state phases are also discussed.

Stripe and supersolid phases of spin–orbit coupled spin-2 Bose–Einstein condensates in an optical lattice

Ji-Guo Wang, Shi-Jie Yang

We study the ground-state phases of two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional spin-dependent optical lattice. Due to the competition among optical lattice, spin-orbit coupling and spin-exchange interaction, the exotic ground-state phases are found, i.e. three types of the stripe phases and three types of the supersolid phases. The spin-exchange interaction can adjust the direction of the stripe in the stripe phase and generate various vortex lattice structures in the supersolid phase, which shows that the spin-exchange interaction plays an important role in the formation of the stripe and supersolid phases of spin-orbit coupled spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice.

Helical supersolid phases in spin-orbit-coupled bosons

Ji-Guo Wang, Shi-Jie Yang

We study the ground-state phases of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate loaded in a two-dimensional optical lattice. We find three types of helical supersolid phases, which are dependent on the anisotropy of the spin-orbit coupling with respect to the relative strength of the $y$ and $x$ directions. The period of density modulation increases with the strength of the spin-orbit coupling.

Superfluid and magnetic states of an ultracold Bose gas with synthetic three-dimensional spin-orbit coupling in an optical lattice

Dan-Wei Zhang, Ji-Pei Chen, Chuan-Jia Shan +2 more

We study ultracold bosonic atoms with synthetic three-dimensional spin-orbit (SO) coupling in a cubic optical lattice. In the superfluidity phase, the lowest energy band exhibits one, two, or four pairs of degenerate single-particle ground states depending on the SO-coupling strengths, which can give rise to condensate states with spin stripes for weak atomic interactions. In the deep Mott-insulator regime, the effective spin Hamiltonian of the system combines three-dimensional Heisenberg exchange interactions, anisotropy interactions, and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Based on Monte Carlo simulations, we numerically demonstrate that the resulting Hamiltonian with an additional Zeeman field has a rich phase diagram with spiral, stripe, vortex crystal, and especially Skyrmion crystal spin textures in each $xy$-plane layer. The obtained Skyrmion crystals can be tunable with square and hexagonal symmetries in a columnar manner along the $z$ axis, and moreover are stable against the interlayer spin-spin interactions in a large parameter region.

Magnetic and nematic phases in a Weyl type spin–orbit-coupled spin-1 Bose gas

Guanjun Chen, Li Chen, Yunbo Zhang

We present a variational study of the spin-1 Bose gases in a harmonic trap with three-dimensional spin–orbit (SO) coupling of Weyl type. For weak SO coupling, we treat the single-particle ground states as the form of perturbational harmonic oscillator states in the lowest total angular momentum manifold with j = 1, m j = 1, 0, −1. When the two-body interaction is considered, we set the trail order parameter as the superposition of three degenerate single-particle ground-states and the weight coefficients are determined by minimizing the energy functional. Two ground state phases, namely the magnetic and the nematic phases, are identified depending on the spin-independent and the spin-dependent interactions. Unlike the non-SO-coupled spin-1 Bose–Einstein condensate for which the phase boundary between the magnetic and the nematic phase lies exactly at zero spin-dependent interaction, the boundary is modified by the SO-coupling. We find the magnetic phase is featured with phase-separated density distributions, 3D skyrmion-like spin textures and competing magnetic and biaxial nematic orders, while the nematic phase is featured with miscible density distributions, zero magnetization and spatially modulated uniaxial nematic order. The emergence of higher spin order creates new opportunities for exploring spin-tensor-related physics in SO coupled superfluid.

Stable Three‐Dimensional Lattice Solitons in Spin‐Orbit‐Coupled Bose‐Einstein Condensates

Liangwei Zeng, Boris A. Malomed, Yaroslav V. Kartashov +1 more

ABSTRACT We address three‐dimensional (3D) solitons maintained by spin‐orbit coupling (SOC) in the binary self‐interacting Bose‐Einstein condensate (BEC) held in the 3D optical lattice (OL). The analysis reveals that the SOC‐OL interplay results in the formation of stable full‐vortex (FV) solitons, built as sets of four density peaks residing in neighboring wells of the lattice potential, with the superimposed global vortical phase, and site‐centered semi‐vortices (SVs), in which the vorticity is present in only one component. The FV solitons, with their specific phase textures, do not exist in a uniform BEC with SOC. FV and SV states in the binary self‐attractive BEC are stable despite the possibility of the supercritical collapse in the 3D system. Such states also exist, as gap solitons, in the self‐repulsive 3D system. In terms of the chemical potential and number of particles, the stability regions of the 3D FV solitons and SVs expand with the increase of the SOC strength and OL depth. The results open the route to the creation of 3D complexes of vorticity‐carrying condensates that can be realized with existing experimental techniques.
