Ultra high-speed superconducting RSFQ (Rapid Single-Flux-Quantum) digital switching logic

Coenrad Johann Fourie, Willem Jakobus Perold

The simulation of existing and newly developed RSFQ components is discussed, and the results interpreted. These components represent data with picosecond voltage pulses. Amongst superconducting logic families, RSFQ promises to be the fastest. Theoretical operational limits are predicted as 300 GHz, 100 times faster than conventional semiconducting logic.

Superconducting devices have intrinsically superior characteristics to those of semiconductor devices. Presently, we can fabricate more than twenty thousand junctions on one chip using niobium technology. We have demonstrated the operation of a network system with a superconducting interconnection chip using voltage-state logic. Single flux quantum devices are promising for future superconducting applications because the clock frequency of SFQ logic is higher than that of voltage-state. We have proposed a high-end switch based on hybrid architecture using optical devices, semiconductors and SFQ devices. To demonstrate the high-speed operation of SFQ circuits, we developed an arbiter circuit that uses SFQ components and the arbiter circuit operates at 60 GHz. We also have developed a high Tc superconducting (HTS) SFQ sampler system for observing ultra-fast signal waveforms. In addition, we will discuss the prospects of future superconducting devices based on the fabrication technologies we developed.

Technical comparison between superconductive RSFQ logic circuits and silicon CMOS digital logics

Wanju Cho, Gunhwi Moon

The development technique of digital logic using CMOS device is close reached several limitations These make technical needs that are ultra high speed superconductive systems based on CMOS silicon digital computing technique. Comparing digital logic based on silicon CMOS, the computing technique based on ultra high speed superconductive systems has many advantages which are ultra low power consumption, ultra high operation speed. etc. It is estimated that features like these increasingly improve the possibility of ultra low power and ultra superconductive systems. In this paper digital logics of current CMOS technique and RSFQ superconductive technique are compared with and analyzed.
