Logic Operation Using a High Tc Coupled Superconducting Quantum Interference Device

Kazuo Saitoh, Hiroyuki Fuke, Tadashi Utagawa +1 more

Operation principle of AND/OR logic has been realized in a coupled high-T c Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID). The device consists of rf- and dc-SQUID's. The logic operation is based on the nonlinear characteristics of the internal and external magnetic flux in the rf-SQUID. Results of the logic operation can be read out by the dc-SQUID. The device is made of NdBa2Cu3O7-δ superconducting thin film with superconducting weak links fabricated using a narrow-focused Ga-ion beam technology.

Superconducting digital circuits with low-T/sub c/ and high-T/sub c/ materials

J.H. Kang, John X. Przybysz, Donald L. Miller +1 more

The authors argue that superconducting digital electronics is the future trend for high-speed and low-power applications. Low-T/sub c/ technology based on stable Nb-AlO/sub x/-Nb tunneling junctions has been successful in constructing most of the digital circuit logic elements. A four-stage shift register constructed with latching logic operated up to 4 GHz with a power consumption of about 60 mu W per gate. A 12-b analog-digital coverter constructed with a single flux quantum (SFQ) logic showed proper operation with the total power dissipated being only about 100 mu W. Fabrication of Josephson tunneling junctions with high-T/sub c/ materials has been tougher than with low-T/sub c/ materials. However, recently developed very high speed rapid single flux quantum (RSFQ) logic circuits can be applied to weak link type junctions fabricated with YBa/sub 2/Cu/sub 3/O/sub 7-x/ films. Simulations of the various circuits with weak link type junctions, e.g., shift registers, analog-digital converters, etc., show fast operation and reasonable margins. Applications of similar concepts can be applied to NbN circuits operating at above 10 K.>

Superconducting nanotransistor based digital logic gates

Seung‐Beck Lee, G. D. Hutchinson, David A Williams +2 more

We describe the fabrication and digital logic operation of superconducting nanotransistors. The nanotransistor is a superconducting weak-link device that has integrated hot-phonon injector heaters to control its switching critical current. The fabrication process utilizes a self-aligned method, where the heater acts as a mask for reactive ion etching to define the device pattern. This device is much simpler to fabricate than previously reported controllable superconducting transistors and the principle of operation makes it possible to use a single nanotransistor connected to a load resistor as a NOT logic gate, allowing lower power consumption and improved levels of integration.
