Abstract

We report effect of isotope separation on the homogeneous linewidth in Er3+-doped Y2SiO5 measured by using spectral hole burning. Isotope 167Er3+ provides a drastic reduction of the spectral hole width by strongly suppressing instantaneous spectral diffusion.

Effect of isotopic purification on spectral-hole narrowing in 167Er3+ hyperfine transitions

Takehiko Tawara, Giacomo Mariani, Kaoru Shimizu +3 more

We investigated spectral-hole narrowing in optical transitions between hyperfine sublevels in isotopically purified erbium ions ( 167 Er 3+ ). The homogeneous broadening Γ h of the optical transition was measured in purified and non-purified Er 3+ -doped crystals via spectral-hole burning. The measured Γ h in the purified 167 Er 3+ exhibited a significant reduction of the hole width because the fluctuation of the local magnetic field induced by the electron spins of the surrounding Er 3+ ions was eliminated. Because the narrowing of the Γ h is equivalent to the prolongation of the coherence time, the isotopic purification is effective for the coherent manipulation of quantum states.

Exceptionally narrow homogeneous linewidth in erbium-doped glasses

Y. Sun, R. L. Cone, Laurent Bigot +1 more

We show that rare-earth (RE-) doped glasses can have homogeneous linewidths as narrow as 287 kHz at (4)He temperatures. This is far narrower than others reported in glasses in the same temperature range and is suitable for precise spectral hole burning and spatial-spectral holographic applications. It is known that cw spectral hole burning linewidth measurements of RE ions in glasses are hindered by the presence of spectral diffusion but, even in glasses, application of a magnetic field can freeze out RE spin-spin interactions responsible for spectral diffusion and isolate the remaining contribution of two-level systems (TLSs). The Er(3+):2G2S glasses have unusually low TLS contributions, making it possible to study the real homogeneous linewidth using photon echo measurements. The contribution from TLSs is only 170 T(1.3) kHz when subjected to a field of 5 T.

We have established the lifetime t1of the hyperfine sublevels of167Er3+ions in Y2SiO5using spectral hole burning, measuring it as 37.8 + 8.9 ms at 2.25 K. Its temperature dependence varies as (1/T)n(n ~ 3).

Time-resolved spectral hole burning in Er^3+:YLiF_4: experiments and computer simulations

Y. P. Wang, R. M. Macfarlane, David Paul Landau +1 more

We have measured spectral diffusion in Er3+-doped YLiF4 from the time dependence of spectral hole shapes. The holes were burned in the absorption corresponding to the transition between the lowest Zeeman components of the 4I15/2(1) and 4F9/2(1) levels of Er3+:YLiF4 at 15298.6 cm−1 and were scanned by rapid Zeeman tuning of the erbium energy levels. In an external magnetic field of 26 kG, which supresses erbium–erbium spin flips, the mechanism for spectral diffusion involved local field fluctuations that are due to 19F nuclear spin flips in the perturbing field of the erbium electron spins. Numerical simulation of the fluorine spin dynamics gives semiquantitative agreement with the observed time-dependent hole shapes.

Hole-burning techniques for isolation and study of individual hyperfine transitions in inhomogeneously broadened solids demonstrated in Pr3+:Y2SiO5

Mattias Nilsson, Lars Rippe, Stefan Kröll +2 more

Due to their narrow homogeneous linewidths, rare-earth ions in inorganic crystals at low temperatures have recently been given considerable attention as test materials for experiments in coherent quantum optics. Because these narrow linewidth transitions have been buried in a wide inhomogeneous line, the scope of experiments that could be carried out in these materials has been limited. However, here we present spectroscopic techniques, based on spectral hole burning and optical pumping, which allow hyperfine transitions that are initially buried within an inhomogeneously broadened absorption line to be studied with no background absorption from other transitions. A sequence of hole-burning pulses is used to isolate selected transitions between hyperfine levels, which makes it possible to directly study properties of the transitions, e.g., transition strengths, and gives access to information that is difficult to obtain in standard hole-burning spectroscopy, such as the ordering of hyperfine levels. The techniques introduced are applicable to absorbers in a solid with long-lived sublevels in the ground state and where the homogeneous linewidth and sublevel separations are smaller than the inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transition. In particular, this includes rare-earth ions doped into inorganic crystals and in the present work the techniques are demonstrated in spectroscopy of ${\mathrm{Pr}}^{3+}$ in ${\mathrm{Y}}_{2}{\mathrm{SiO}}_{5}$. Information on the hyperfine structure and relative transition strengths of the $^{3}H_{4}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{1}D_{2}$ hyperfine transitions in ${\mathrm{Pr}}^{3+}:{\mathrm{Y}}_{2}{\mathrm{SiO}}_{5}$ has been obtained from frequency-resolved absorption measurements, in combination with coherent and incoherent driving of the transitions.
