Abstract

Abstract In this paper, the impact of cochannel interference on the secrecy performance of dual‐hop decode‐and‐forward relaying is investigated. In particular, the outage and intercept probabilities are obtained for the opportunistic relay selection (ORS) model in the presence of nonidentical interfering signals under a single/multiple passive eavesdropper(s) attack. Moreover, the proposed work enhances physical layer security performance of ORS model using cooperative jamming (CJ) techniques. Therefore, new closed‐form expressions are derived for the intercept and outage probabilities of the CJ‐ORS model in the presence of interference over Rayleigh fading channels. Moreover, the analyses are generalized to the case of multiple eavesdroppers where closed‐form expressions are derived for the intercept probability. To reveal more insights on the proposed work secrecy performance, asymptotic closed‐form expressions for the intercept and outage probabilities are obtained. Using these asymptotic expressions, a power allocation optimization problem is formulated and solved for enhancing the system security. The derived analytical formulas herein are supported by numerical and simulation results to clarify the main contributions of the paper. The results show that, although the cochannel interference increases the system outage probability, it might improve the system secrecy performance. Moreover, the proposed CJ‐ORS model is shown to enhance the system secrecy performance compared to ORS model.

Optimal Power Allocation for Enhancing Physical Layer Security in Opportunistic Relay Networks in the Presence of Co-Channel Interference

Ahmed Hassan Abd El-Malek, Anas M. Salhab, Salam A. Zummo

In this paper, the impact of co-channel interference (CCI) on the secrecy performance of the dual-hop decode-and-forward relaying network is investigated. First, the security-reliability trade-off (SRT) analysis is studied for conventional single-hop networks under a single passive eavesdropper attack. Then, the SRT analysis is investigated to the opportunistic relay selection (ORS) model in the presence of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) interfering signals. Moreover, the proposed work enhances physical layer (PHY) security performance of ORS model using cooperative jamming techniques (CJ-ORS). For this purpose, new closed-form expressions are derived for intercept probability and outage probability of CJ-ORS model in the presence of interference over Rayleigh fading channels. A power allocation optimization problem is formulated and solved for enhancing the system security. The derived analytical formulas herein are supported by numerical and simulation results to clarify the main contributions of the paper.

Physical Layer Security Enhancement for Internet of Things in the Presence of Co-Channel Interference and Multiple Eavesdroppers

Tonny Ssettumba, Ahmed Hassan Abd El-Malek, Maha Mohamed Elsabrouty +1 more

This paper investigates the secrecy performance of a multiuser system that utilizes transmit antenna selection scheme at the base station and adopts threshold-based selection diversity opportunistic scheduling over legitimate nodes. The legitimate transmission suffers from the presence of noncolluding (Non-Col) and colluding (Col) multiple passive eavesdroppers. Both the legitimate and eavesdropping nodes are assumed to suffer from co-channel interference (CCI) signals from independent channels that follow Rayleigh fading. Closed-form expressions for the probability density functions and cumulative density functions of the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for both eavesdropping scenarios in the presence of CCI signals are derived. In addition, closed-form expressions for the network secrecy outage probability (SOP) for Non-Col/Col scenarios are derived. At the high signal-to-noise ratio values, closed-form expressions for the asymptotic secrecy outage probabilities are obtained. Following this obtained asymptotic analysis, an optimization problem for power allocation is formulated and solved to improve the secrecy performance of the network by minimizing the asymptotic SOP for both Col and Non-Col cases. The derived analytical expressions are then validated using both simulations and numerical results.

Physical layer security in cooperative amplify‐and‐forward relay networks over mixed Nakagami‐ m and double Nakagami‐ m fading channels: performance evaluation and optimisation

Anshul Pandey, Suneel Yadav

The authors investigate the secrecy performance of a cooperative relaying network, wherein a fixed source communicates with a fixed destination via an amplify‐and‐forward mobile relay in the presence of a passive mobile eavesdropper. They assume that the source‐to‐relay channel and relay‐to‐destination channel experience Nakagami‐ m fading, whereas relay‐to‐eavesdropper link follows double Nakagami‐ m fading. Under such a mixed fading environment, they derive the novel tight closed‐form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP), probability of non‐zero secrecy capacity, and intercept probability of the considered system. They also deduce the asymptotic secrecy outage and intercept probability expressions in the high signal‐to‐noise ratio regime to highlight the impact of fading parameters and channel conditions on the secrecy diversity order. It is shown that the system can achieve secrecy diversity order of min( ) in terms of SOP, and in terms of intercept probability, where and represent the fading severity parameters between source and relay and between relay and destination, respectively. They also formulate and investigate analytically two optimisation problems, namely, optimal relay location with fixed power allocation and optimal power allocation with fixed relay location, to minimise the system SOP. They verify analytical findings via numerical and simulation results.

Effect of RF Interference on the Security-Reliability Tradeoff Analysis of Multiuser Mixed RF/FSO Relay Networks With Power Allocation

Ahmed Hassan Abd El-Malek, Anas M. Salhab, Salam A. Zummo +1 more

In this paper, the impact of radio frequency (RF) cochannel interference (CCI) on the performance of multiuser mixed RF/free-space optical (FSO) relay network with opportunistic user scheduling under eavesdropping attack is studied. The considered system includes multiple users, one decode-and forward relay, one destination, and an eavesdropper. In the analysis, the RF/FSO channels follow Nakagami-m/Gamma-Gamma fading models, respectively, with pointing errors on the FSO link. Exact closed-form expression for the system outage probability is derived. Then, an asymptotic expression for the outage probability is obtained at the high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio regime to get more insights on the system performance. Moreover, the obtained results are used to find the optimal transmission power in different turbulence conditions. The secrecy performance is studied in the presence of CCI at both the authorized relay and eavesdropper, where closed-form expressions are derived for the intercept probability. The physical layer security performance is enhanced using cooperative jamming models, where new closed-form expressions are derived for the intercept probability. Another power allocation optimization problem is formulated to find the optimal transmission and jamming powers. The derived analytical formulas are supported by numerical results to clarify the main contributions of this paper.

Optimal Relay Selection with a Full-Duplex Active Eavesdropper in Cooperative Wireless Networks

He Zhou, Dongxuan He, Hua Wang +1 more

In this paper, we investigate the physical layer security of a dual-hop cooperative network in the presence of a full-duplex active eavesdropper, which can overhear the confidential signals and transmit jamming signals simultaneously. We utilize the optimal relay selection scheme to improve the secrecy performance, where the relay maximizing the secrecy capacity will be selected to forward the information. To evaluate the secrecy performance of our system, we derive a compact closed-form expression of the secrecy outage probability. Besides, we also analyze the asymptotic performance related to the position of the nodes. Finally, we verify our analysis through the numerical results, and demonstrate that there exists a secrecy protection region where the secrecy outage probability is below a target probability.
