Diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers created by scanning focused helium ion beam and annealing

Zhihong Huang, W.-D. Li, Charles Santori +7 more

We demonstrate a method to create nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond using focused helium ion microscopy. Near-surface NV centers can be created with spatial resolution below 0.6 μm. We studied the density, creation efficiency, and spectral linewidths at optical and microwave frequencies for NV centers produced using various helium ion implantation doses. The optical linewidths are narrower than those of similar nitrogen-vacancy centers produced using nitrogen ion implantation.

Structures in diamond for optical manipulation of nitrogen-vacancy centers

We describe research on new optical structures in diamond for quantum information and sensing applications based on the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center. Results include etching experiments that reveal the vertical distribution of NV centers produced by ion implantation and annealing, and gallium phosphide waveguides fabricated on diamond with evanescent coupling to NV centers close to the diamond surface.

Implantation of labelled single nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond using N15

J. R. Rabeau, P. Reichart, G Yu Tamanyan +7 more

Nitrogen-vacancy (NV−) color centers in diamond were created by implantation of 7 keV N15(I=1∕2) ions into type IIa diamond. Optically detected magnetic resonance was employed to measure the hyperfine coupling of single NV− centers. The hyperfine spectrum from NV−15 arising from implanted N15 can be distinguished from NV−14 centers created by native N14(I=1) sites. Analysis indicates 1 in 40 implanted N15 atoms give rise to an optically observable NV−15 center. This report ultimately demonstrates a mechanism by which the yield of NV− center formation by nitrogen implantation can be measured.
