Abstract

We present a continuously tunable optical frequency shifter which allows to choose any shift-frequency including fractions of the original signal bandwidth. A 1.6-Tb/s PDM-16QAM superchannel is arbitrarily frequency-shifted within THz-range during a 200-km error-free transmission.

All optical broadband tunable quantum frequency shifter

Li Chen, Jia-Ning Guo, Di-Yuan Zheng +9 more

A frequency shifter of the photon is a key component for frequency-multiplexed high-capacity quantum communications and frequency-encoded quantum computation. Existed methods for shifting the frequency of a photon based on electro-optical or acousto-optical effect, however, suffer the limited frequency shift up to a few hundreds of GHz; furthermore, high-quality micro-wave electronics are required. The frequency of a photon can also be shifted with the frequency difference equal to the frequency of pump laser by using an all optical-wave-mixing approach, which is usually about tens of THz. So, there is a big frequency shifting gap between these methods. Here, we propose a new scheme of a quantum frequency shifter based on an all-optical-wave-mixing process, which can theoretically achieve a frequency shift ranging from GHz to a few THz, therefore bridging the gap. As a principle of poof, by using two pump beams in a three-wave mixing cascading process, a heralded single photon is frequency-shifted more than ±400 GHz, and the shift can be tuned continuously over broadband by changing the frequency difference between two pump lasers. In addition, high coincidence to accidence ratio between the shifted photons and the heralded photon indicates the preserve of quantum properties. The present quantum frequency shifter is in analog to an electro-optical based shifter, but with much broader tuning ability. Our all-optical quantum frequency shifter will become a fundamental building block for high-speed quantum communication networks and frequency-domain photonic quantum computation.

Quantum frequency conversion with ultra-broadband tuning in a Raman memory

Philip J. Bustard, Duncan G. England, Khabat Heshami +2 more

Quantum frequency conversion is a powerful tool for the construction of hybrid quantum photonic technologies. Raman quantum memories are a promising method of conversion due to their broad bandwidths. Here we demonstrate frequency conversion of THz-bandwidth, fs-duration photons at the single-photon level using a Raman quantum memory based on the rotational levels of hydrogen molecules. We shift photons from 765 nm to wavelengths spanning from 673 to 590 nm---an absolute shift of up to 116 THz. We measure total conversion efficiencies of up to 10% and a maximum signal-to-noise ratio of 4.0(1):1, giving an expected conditional fidelity of 0.75, which exceeds the classical threshold of 2/3. Thermal noise could be eliminated by cooling with liquid nitrogen, giving noiseless conversion with wide tunability in the visible and infrared.

Spatially distributed aggregation of a polarization-division multiplexed superchannel by frequency conversion in fiber

Thomas Richter, Robert Elschner, Carsten Schmidt‐Langhorst +4 more

We extend our concept for distributed ultra-dense frequency-division multiplex of single-polarization subcarriers to multiplex of polarization-division multiplexed (PDM) subcarriers. Precise frequency allocation of PDM subcarriers within a 400-Gb/s superchannel is experimentally validated with Nyquist-shaped PDM-QPSK subcarriers.

20-Gb/s QPSK transmission over 4km-long holey fiber using a wavelength tunable quantum dot light laser in T-band

Akihiro Murano, Shoko Yamada, Atsushi Kanno +2 more

We successfully demonstrate 10-Gbbaud quadrature phase-shift keying signal transmission over a 4-km-long endlessly single-mode holey fiber using a wavelength-tunable semiconductor quantum dot (QD) laser. The transmission is carried out in the waveband of 1040.72–1070.02 nm with a bandwidth of 7.89 THz, which is broader than conventional wavebands such as the C and L bands. In the study, a QD laser notable for its wavelength stability and tunability is employed for its broad bandwidth availability on the transmission. Observed bit error rates are within a forward error correction limit of 2×10–3 under homodyne coherent detection configuration with offline digital signal processing. The abundant frequency resources in this T band (1000–1260 nm) help increase the capacity of a transmission link using a large number of wavelength channels by the QD laser.

20-Gb/s QPSK transmission over 10-km-long holey fiber using a wavelength tunable quantum dot light source in O-band

Akihiro Murano, Fumiya Yagi, Naokatsu Yamamoto +3 more

We successfully demonstrate 20-Gb/s quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal transmission. The transmission was carried out over endlessly single-mode holey fiber in the waveband of 1276.02–1304.26 nm, whose bandwidth of 5.09- THz is broader than the traditional C-band. A wavelength-tunable quantum dot (QD) laser with broad wavelength tunability helps realize bandwidth availability. A single InAs/InGaAs QD optical gainchip was grown using a sandwiched sub-nanometer separator technique in the wavelength of 1.3-μm band. Using this gain chip, the QD light source has good wavelength stability, compactness and wavelength tunablility. The measured transmission results show bit error rates within a forward error correction limit of 2×10–3 using intradyne coherent detection with offline digital signal processing. In this study, it is expected that abundant frequency resources such as the O-band are coherently enhanced by the use of a large number of wavelength channels by effectively using the QD- laser.

Tunable broadband polarization conversion based on coherent control

Hong Liu, Tingting Lv, Zheng Zhu +2 more

The processing of photonic information strongly depends on electronic technique, which limits the speed of information processing. Fortunately, modulation of light with light based on metamaterials creates a new approach to realize photoelectric devices and modulation of photonic information. In this work, we present a tunable broadband polarization conversion based on coherent control, which makes it possible to achieve a dynamic modulation of cross-polarization conversion over a wide frequency range. The proposed metamaterial can be regarded as a broadband cross-polarization modulator that can be easily switched on/off by changing the relative phase difference between the two counterpropagating coherent beams, which is of great importance for optical data processing and integration of optical devices.
