Abstract

We extend our concept for distributed ultra-dense frequency-division multiplex of single-polarization subcarriers to multiplex of polarization-division multiplexed (PDM) subcarriers. Precise frequency allocation of PDM subcarriers within a 400-Gb/s superchannel is experimentally validated with Nyquist-shaped PDM-QPSK subcarriers.

Continuously Tunable Optical Frequency Shift of 1.6-Tb/s Superchannel up to THz-Range by Polarization Switched Frequency Conversion

Tomoyuki Kato, Shigeki Watanabe, Takahito Tanimura +5 more

We present a continuously tunable optical frequency shifter which allows to choose any shift-frequency including fractions of the original signal bandwidth. A 1.6-Tb/s PDM-16QAM superchannel is arbitrarily frequency-shifted within THz-range during a 200-km error-free transmission.

Subcarrier multiplexing optical quantum key distribution

Arturo Ortigosa-Blanch, J. Capmany

We present the physical principles of a quantum key distribution system that opens the possibility of parallel quantum key distribution and, therefore, of a substantial improvement in the bit rate of such systems. Quantum mechanics allows for multiple measurements at different frequencies and thus we exploit this concept by extending the concept of frequency coding to the case where more than one radio-frequency subcarrier is used for independently encoding the bits onto an optical carrier. Taking advantage of subcarrier multiplexing techniques we demonstrate that the bit rate can be greatly improved as parallel key distribution is enabled.

We experimentally demonstrate quantum key distribution at 28 bit/s rate in a telecommunications fiber channel with 45 dB loss using a subcarrier wave approach. This approach offers polarization independency, high bitrates and wide multiplexing capabilities.
