Abstract

It is an important approach for achieving secure physical layer transmission using beamforming technology of multi-antenna, most of the transmission models are built on the perfect channel estimation model. The paper studies the secure physical layer transmission of multi-antenna beamforming with imperfect channel estimation information (CSI) and discusses the realization of the physical layer security in the actual communication environment with channel estimation error. We build a secure physical layer transmission model using beamforming technology of multi-antenna combined with SVD precoding technology, and we also prove the realization of the model with simulation under imperfect CSI.

Ensuring Secrecy in MIMO Wiretap Channels with Imperfect CSIT: A Beamforming Approach

A. Mukherjee, Arnold Lee Swindlehurst

In this paper, we investigate transmit beamforming schemes based on artificial interference for physical layer security in a multi-antenna wiretap channel. We consider the case where no information regarding the eavesdropper is present, and we use the signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio of a single transmitted data stream as our performance metric. Using a second-order perturbation analysis, we quantify the degradation in performance due to imperfect CSI of the main channel at the transmitter. We then present a robust beamforming scheme that approaches the performance obtained in the perfect CSI case. Numerical simulations verify our analytical performance predictions, and illustrate the benefits of the robust beamforming scheme.

Exploiting large-scale MIMO techniques for physical layer security with imperfect channel state information

Xiaoming Chen, Chau Yuen, Zhaoyang Zhang

In this paper, we study the problem of physical layer security in large-scale multiple input multiple output (LS-MIMO) systems. The large number of antenna elements in LS-MIMO system is exploited to enhance transmission security and improve system performance, especially when the eavesdropper is closer to the information source and has more antennas than the legitimate user. However, in practical systems, the problem becomes challenging because the eavesdropper channel state information (CSI) is usually unavailable without cooperation and the legitimate CSI may be imperfect due to channel estimation error. In this paper, we first analyze the performance of physical layer security without eavesdropper CSI and with imperfect legitimate CSI, and then propose an energy-efficient power allocation scheme to meet the demand for wireless security and quality of service (QoS) simultaneously. Finally, numerical results validate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Secure Massive MIMO Under Imperfect CSI: Performance Analysis and Channel Prediction

Tinghan Yang, Rongqing Zhang, Xiang Cheng +1 more

In recent years, physical layer security has been regarded as a promising technique to facilitate secure communications in next generation mobile systems, where theoretically massive MIMO can significantly enhance the system secrecy performance under its advantage in shaping the transmitted signals to null the interference or leakage. However, in practical systems, the achievable secrecy performance under imperfect channel state information (CSI) deserves further investigation. In this paper, we give a detailed analysis about the physical layer security problem in a multi-user massive MIMO system with imperfect CSI. The considered imperfect CSI includes both the outdated CSI due to the transmission and processing delay, and the channel estimation error. We first derive a tight asymptotic lower bound of the ergodic system secrecy capacity under imperfect CSI, and then analyze how imperfect CSI affects the system secrecy performance. Moreover, we propose a channel prediction scheme that can result in more accurate CSI, in order to alleviate the negative effect on the achievable system secrecy capacity caused by imperfect CSI. Simulation results reveal that the imperfect CSI greatly reduces the system secrecy capacity, while our designed channel prediction scheme can effectively mitigate the harmful impact of imperfect CSI and thus improve the system secrecy performance.

Wireless Physical Layer Security with Imperfect Channel State Information: A Survey

Biao He, Xiangyun Zhou, Thushara Dheemantha Abhayapala

Physical layer security is an emerging technique to improve the wireless communication security, which is widely regarded as a complement to cryptographic technologies. To design physical layer security techniques under practical scenarios, the uncertainty and imperfections in the channel knowledge need to be taken into consideration. This paper provides a survey of recent research and development in physical layer security considering the imperfect channel state information (CSI) at communication nodes. We first present an overview of the main information-theoretic measures of the secrecy performance with imperfect CSI. Then, we describe several signal processing enhancements in secure transmission designs, such as secure on-off transmission, beamforming with artificial noise, and secure communication assisted by relay nodes or in cognitive radio systems. The recent studies of physical layer security in large-scale decentralized wireless networks are also summarized. Finally, the open problems for the on-going and future research are discussed.
