Abstract

In this paper we show that nondegenerate Λ three-level medium without external coherent driving can produce a large index of refraction at a point of vanishing absorption via the atomic coherence which is induced by the probe field itself.

ENHANCEMENT OF THE INDEX OF REFRACTION VIA QUANTUM INTERFERENCE IN A SIMPLE THREE-LEVEL ATOMIC SYSTEM

Shangqing Gong

The steady state behavior for a simple three-level atomic system has been analyzed. It is shown that the strong coherent driving field can lead to the transparency of the medium to the weak probe field. Furthermore, the same system can also generate a large refractive index with zero absorption.

Atomic-coherence-induced enhancement of refractive index

Zhenfei Luo, Zhizhan Xu, Zhou Jiao-yang

The influences of lower-level coherence in atomic medium of Ξ-type energy-level scheme on the absorption and dispersion are studied in dressed states. It is found that a weak probe light of a certain frequency can be free of atomic absorption, and at the same time has a large index of refraction.

Influence of atomic coherence on the absorption-dispersion relation in V-type energy-level scheme

Wenqi Zhang

A new feature will be exhibited in the absorption-dispersion relation if quantum coherence is induced by an external field in the medium consisting of atoms of V-type energy-level configuration. In particular, when a weak light of a certain frequency travels in the medium, the refractive index can be larger than 1 where the absorption vanishes.

Enhanced index of refraction in four-wave-mixing media

Elena Kuznetsova, Renuka Rajapakse, Susanne F. Yelin

Refractive index enhancement accompanied by vanishing absorption in a four-level atomic system interacting with two control and two probe fields in a regime of four-wave mixing (FWM) has been predicted and studied in the present work. We analyzed the maximal index enhancement in the four-level FWM system and gave index estimates for a real atomic gas of ${}^{40}$K, taking into account its multilevel structure and collisional and Doppler broadenings at large atomic densities. We also discussed how vanishing absorption with no nearby amplification can be realized in a two species system, consisting of a four-level FWM and a two-level system, where the latter provides additional absorption for one of the probe fields. We numerically estimated the index change in a system composed of ${}^{40}$K and ${}^{39}$K gases.

Atomic Coherence via Modified Spontaneous Relaxation of Driven Three-Level Atoms

Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Paul Mandel, Marlan O. Scully

A strong coherent field drastically modifies the spontaneous decay of three-level atoms when one dynamic Stark sublevel crosses a neighboring atomic state. This leads to an anomalous atomic response yielding maximal coherence, vanishing absorption, and ultralarge index of refraction.
