Abstract

A new feature will be exhibited in the absorption-dispersion relation if quantum coherence is induced by an external field in the medium consisting of atoms of V-type energy-level configuration. In particular, when a weak light of a certain frequency travels in the medium, the refractive index can be larger than 1 where the absorption vanishes.

Absorption and dispersion of a V-type three-level atom driven by a microwave field

Zeng Zhi

When the two excited levels in a V-type three-level atom are coupled by a microwave field, the quantum coherence is created by the interference between the atomic coupling transition channels. The probe absorption and dispersion properties can be modulated by adjusting the strength of microwave field, and the phenomenon of the high refractive index without absorption appears at the resonance.Besides, the relative phase control of probe gain can be achieved due to the quantum coherence induced by the microwave field.

In this paper we show that nondegenerate Λ three-level medium without external coherent driving can produce a large index of refraction at a point of vanishing absorption via the atomic coherence which is induced by the probe field itself.

Effects of Vacuum Induced Coherence on the Medium Absorp tion and Dispersion in a Three-level Λ-type System

Hou Bang-pin

Due to the interaction of the vaccum filed with a three-level Λ-type atom,in which its lower levels are neardegenerate, there appears a vacuum induced coherence originating from the interference between the two transitions. The absorption and dispersion of the atomic system is strongly dependent on the vacuum induced coherence. In addition, the atomic optical property is also related to the phase of the external coherent fields due to the existence of the vacuum induced coherence.

Effects of decay-induced coherence and microwave-induced coherence on the index of refraction in a three-level Λ-type atomic system

Weihua Xu, Jin‐Hui Wu, Jin-Yue Gao

We study the dispersion-absorption properties in a three-level Λ-type atomic system with two closely lying lower levels. We consider two schemes: in the first, the two lower levels are coupled by decay-induced coherence, and in the second, quantum coherence is created by coupling the two lower levels to each other by a microwave field. We found that due to the decay-induced coherence or microwave-induced coherence, the dispersion-absorption properties can be controlled by the relative phase of applied fields, large index of refraction without absorption always can be obtained just by choosing proper values of the relative phase.

Control of the optical properties of a medium by atomic coherence and quantum interference effects

M. A. G. Martinez

The control of the optical properties of a medium by atomic coherence and quantum interference effects is an important area of research, not only for its fundamental aspects in the understanding of radiation and matter interaction, but also for its potential applications in the design of optical devices. Atomic coherence can emerge in a medium through the coupling of a strong coherent field to an atomic transition. This coupling affects the optical properties of the medium in a very interesting ways. For example, it may yield light amplification without population inversion. Also, it can modify the traditional dispersion of an optical medium in such a way that maximum variations of the refractive index occur around a spectral region of vanishing absorption. In the first part of this work we investigate some fundamental aspects of this coherent dynamics. We investigate how this non-inversion gain is affected by the presence of atomic motion. The coherent interaction between atom and radiation can lead to the interference between optical paths of decay. We report on an atomic setting where the interference structures depend upon the phase of the coherent field, an new effect which is absent in other resonance fluorescent phenomena. As a potential application, we investigate a novel approach for the modulation of optical signal. This approach consists of injecting atomic coherence in the medium in order to tailor its optical properties so it is a more suitable medium for modulation.
