Abstract

In this paper, we propose a versatile integrated optical chip with the ability to generate both coherent and squeezed Bell-like states for quantum information processing purposes. This is a reconfigurable quantum photonic circuit in a lithium niobate substrate, which produces both non-local addition and subtraction of photons on squeezed vacuum states with directional couplers and post-selection. Setting appropriately phases and powers of the input beams, as well as electro-optic phase shifts, coherent and continuous variable Bell-like states are obtained. An analysis of the device operation in both the ideal and realistic scenarios is presented.

Reconfigurable on-chip entangled sources based on lithium-niobate waveguide circuits

Jin, H., F. M. Liu, Ping Xu +6 more

Integrated quantum optics becomes a consequent tendency towards practical quantum information processing. Here, we report the on-chip generation and manipulation of photonic entanglement based on reconfigurable lithium niobate waveguide circuits. By introducing periodically poled structure into the waveguide interferometer, two individual photon-pair sources with controllable phase-shift are produced and cascaded by a quantum interference, resulting in a deterministically separated identical photon pair. The state is characterized by 92.9% visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. Continuous morphing from two-photon separated state to bunched state is further demonstrated by on-chip control of electro-optic phase-shift. The photon flux reaches ~1.4*10^7 pairs nm-1 mW-1. Our work presents a scenario for on-chip engineering of different photon sources and paves a way to the fully integrated quantum technologies.

Engineering continuous and discrete variable quantum vortex states by nonlocal photon subtraction in a reconfigurable photonic chip

David Barral, Jesús Liñares, Daniel Balado

We study the production of entangled two- and N-mode quantum states of light in optical waveguides. To this end, we propose a quantum photonic circuit that produces a reconfigurable superposition of photon subtraction on two single-mode squeezed states. Under postselection, continuous variable or discrete variable entangled states with possibilities in quantum information processing are obtained. Likewise, nesting leads to higher-dimension entanglement with a similar design, enabling the generation of non-Gaussian continuous variable cluster states. Additionally, we show the operation of the device through the generation of quantum vortex states of light and propose an integrated device that measures their order and handedness. Finally, we study the non-Gaussianity, nonclassicality, and entanglement of the quantum states generated with this scheme by means of the optical field-strength distribution, Wigner function, and logarithmic negativity.

On-Chip Generation and Manipulation of Entangled Photons Based on Reconfigurable Lithium-Niobate Waveguide Circuits

Hongming Jin, F. M. Liu, Ping Xu +7 more

A consequent tendency toward high-performance quantum information processing is to develop the fully integrated photonic chip. Here, we report the on-chip generation and manipulation of entangled photons based on reconfigurable lithium-niobate waveguide circuits. By introducing a periodically poled structure into the waveguide circuits, two individual photon-pair sources with a controllable electro-optic phase shift are produced within a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer, resulting in a deterministically separated identical photon pair. The state is characterized by 92.9±0.9% visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. The photon flux reaches ∼1.4×10(7) pairs nm-1 mW-1. The whole chip is designed to contain nine similar units to produce identical photon pairs spanning the telecom C and L band by the flexible engineering of nonlinearity. Our work presents a scenario for on-chip engineering of different photon sources and paves the way to fully integrated quantum technologies.

Programmable lithium niobate photonic chip for near-ideal path entanglement and frequency entanglement

Ping Xu, Jia-Chen Duan, Yu Sun +3 more

Abstract Quantum photonic chip is a powerful platform to prepare multi-functional quantum light sources and actualize complex quantum information processing for its advantages of integration, stability, mass production, and reconfigurability. In this work, we design and fabricate a lithium niobate quantum photonic chip, consisting of tandem multi-poling structures, Mach-Zehnder interferometers, and electro-optic modulation, to produce multiple near-ideal quantum light sources including anti-bunching, path and frequency entangled photon pairs. The anti-bunching photon pairs exhibit off-chip Hong-Ou-Mandel interference visibilities above 99%. The fidelities of both frequency and path entanglement exceed 0.99. Meanwhile, all the quantum states hold a wide wavelength tuning range and high coupling efficiency from the chip. Our work paves the way for the development of programmable multi-functional quantum light sources and further promoting various quantum information tasks and enriching the architectures of on-chip quantum information processing.

Programmable Bell state generation in an integrated thin film lithium niobate circuit

Andreas Maeder, Robert J. Chapman, Alessandra Sabatti +3 more

Abstract Entanglement is central to quantum technologies such as cryptography, sensing, and computing. Photon pairs generated via nonlinear optical processes are excellent for preparing entangled states due to their long coherence times and compatibility with fiber optic networks. Steady progress in nanofabrication has positioned lithium niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) as a leading platform for monolithic integration of photon pair sources into optical circuits, leveraging its strong second-order nonlinearity. Here, we present a reconfigurable photonic integrated circuit on LNOI, which combines two on-chip photon pair sources with programmable interferometers, enabling the generation of entangled states. The photon pair sources achieve a source brightness of 26 MHz nm −1 mW −1 while maintaining a coincidence-to-accidental ratio above 100. We successfully interfere the two sources with 99.0 ± 0.7% visibility, demonstrating the indistinguishability required for producing entanglement on-chip. We show the preparation of any of the maximally entangled Bell states with fidelity above 90% verified by quantum state tomography. These results establish LNOI as a compelling, scalable platform to explore integrated quantum photonic technologies enabled by high-brightness sources of entangled quantum states.

Tunable generation of entangled photons in a nonlinear directional coupler

Frank Setzpfandt, Alexander S. Solntsev, James Titchener +6 more

© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA. The on-chip integration of quantum light sources has enabled the realization of complex quantum photonic circuits. However, for the practical implementation of such circuits in quantum information applications, it is crucial to develop sources delivering entangled quantum photon states with on-demand tunability. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate the concept of a widely tunable quantum light source based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a simple nonlinear directional coupler. We show that spatial photon-pair correlations and entanglement can be reconfigured on-demand by tuning the phase difference between the pump beams and the phase mismatch inside the structure. We experimentally demonstrate the generation of split states, robust N00N states, various intermediate regimes and biphoton steering on a single chip. Furthermore we theoretically investigate other regimes allowing all-optically tunable generation of all Bell states and flexible control of path-energy entanglement. Such wide-range capabilities of a structure comprised of just two coupled nonlinear waveguides are attributed to the intricate interplay between linear coupling and nonlinear phase matching. This scheme provides an important advance towards the realization of reconfigurable quantum circuitry. An integrated all-optically tunable source of two-photon quantum states based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion is experimentally demonstrated in a directional coupler consisting of two lithium niobate waveguides. The degree of entanglement and shape of two-photon spatial correlations is widely tunable by varying the phase mismatch and relative phases of the two pump beams. The operating principle is suitable for practical implementation of reconfigurable photon sources in on-chip quantum circuits.
