Abstract

Abstract The two-photon transitions of atomic rubidium are clearly observed up to the 79d fine structure level using a thermionic diode detector cell, and a cw dye laser was frequency stabilized to one of the 5s- n d transition series. A frequency stability of better than 2×10 -9 was obtained.

Observation of rubidium 5S_1/2→7S_1/2 two-photon transitions with a diode laser

Ming-Sheng Ko, Yi-Wei Liu

The 5S1/2 --> 7S1/2 two-photon transition of atomic rubidium, which is 100 times weaker than the 5S-5D transition, is observed with an extended-cavity diode laser and a vapor cell. Signals with a signal-to-noise ratio of 280 are obtained with a laser power of 10 mW, and the observed linewidth is 3 MHz. The laser wavelength is 760 nm and is locked on the transitions to a stability of 2 x 10(-11). For the first time to our knowledge, the isotope shift of this transition is measured to be 130(4) MHz in atomic frequency.

Doppler-free two-photon transitions to Rydberg levels: convenient, useful, and precise reference wavelengths for dye lasers

S. A. Lee, Boris Peter Stoicheff, J. Helmcke +1 more

We used a tunable cw dye laser to observe Doppler-free two-photon transitions to alkali-atom Rydberg levels. Real-time signals were obtained in an ionization cell of appropriate construction. The two-photon transition wavelengths to rubidium s levels were measured up to n = 50 with better than 1 x 10(-7) absolute accuracy and can be represented to within the experimental precision by a simple function of the principal quantum number, Other related transitions and future possibilities are considered.

Fine Structure of the nD2 Series in Rubidium near the Ionization Limit

Kenneth C. Harvey, Boris Peter Stoicheff

Two-photon, Doppler-free spectroscopy with counter-propagating beams from a cw dye laser and a new type of thermionic detector have been used to study the $^{2}D_{\frac{3}{2}}$ and $^{2}D_{\frac{5}{2}}$ levels of Rb for Rydberg states up to $n=85$, only 16 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ from the ionization limit. It is shown that the fine-structure spacing varies as ${{n}_{\mathrm{eff}}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ for $n>\ensuremath{\sim}25$, and as a linear combination of ${{n}_{\mathrm{eff}}}^{\ensuremath{-}5}$ and ${{n}_{\mathrm{eff}}}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ for $n<\ensuremath{\sim}25$.

Experiments on two-photon absorption of Rb atom using dye laser.

Nobuhiko Ito

Doppler-free two-photon absorption experiments have been preliminarily carried out to investigate the highly excited D states of Rb atom using a cw tunable dye laser. The two-photon absorption signals with big signal to noise ratios have been obtained by means of a space-charge limited ionization detector equipped inside a Rb cell. The sharp slope of the first derivative curve of the absorption signal shows the entire possibility of frequency stabilization of a dye laser in terms of ultra-violet wavelength references via two-photon absorption technique. The obtained experimental results are compared with the results which have been performed so far by other researchers, and quantitative discussions are made.

Optical frequency standard for optical fiber communication based on the Rb 5s → 5d two-photon transition

Miao Zhu, Roger W. Standridge

We report an optical frequency standard based on the 5s --> 5d two-photon transition in Rb atoms. The frequency of a lambda = 778 nm diode laser was locked to the two-photon transition. Second-harmonic generation and an optical phase-locked loop were used to transfer the frequency stability to lambda = 1.556 mum for use in optical fiber communication applications.

Laser frequency stabilization on 5 P → 5 D transition by double resonance optical pumping and two-photon transition spectroscopy in rubidium

Jinpeng Yuan, Shichao Dong, Lirong Wang +2 more

Abstract We present a laser frequency locking scheme for the high excited transition of rubidium, which cannot be directly referenced by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Double resonance optical pumping spectroscopy and two-photon transition spectroscopy of a 5 S → 5 P → 5 D transition are obtained in a room temperature vapor cell and employed as the reference sources. An Allan deviation of 1.71 × 10 −12 at an averaging time of 2048 s with a residual frequency fluctuation of ±0.2 MHz over 7000 s is obtained by two-photon transition spectroscopy. The case of double resonance optical pumping spectroscopy presents an Allan deviation of 4.86 × 10 −12 at an averaging time of 2048 s with a residual frequency fluctuation of ±0.4 MHz over 7000 s. One distinct advantage of two-photon transition spectroscopy method is demonstrated by the analysis of the fast Fourier transform of error signal. A narrower full width at half-maximum of two-photon transition spectroscopy and a higher zero crossing slope by using a frequency modulation method lead to a better frequency stabilization. This work provides a technical basis for the laser frequency stabilization based on atomic and molecular transition spectroscopy, and it also supplies a new frequency standard for optical telecommunication applications.
