Abstract

Using recently developed diagnostic technique we measured the frequency intervals between Rydberg states nF and nD ( n = 38-48) of lithium-7 atoms. The obtained value of the quantum defect δ F for Rydberg states nF is 0.000478(24).

Measurements of quantum defect in RydbergD-states for lithium atoms

D A Murashkin, Sergey A. Saakyan, Vladimir A. Sautenkov +1 more

We have developed an effective spectroscopic method for measure the energy spectra of highly excited ultracold atoms using the registration of resonance fluorescence of atoms in magneto-optical trap during two-step cw excitation of Rydberg states by uv laser. Using this method it was obtained the value of the quantum defect was determined for Rydberg states nD of lithium-7 atoms δ = 0.00192(17).

Laser diagnostics of the energy spectrum of Rydberg states of the lithium-7 atom

Boris B. Zelener, Sergey A. Saakyan, Vladimir A. Sautenkov +3 more

The spectra of excited lithium-7 atoms prepared in a magneto-optical trap are studied using a UV laser. The laser diagnostics of the energy of Rydberg atoms is developed based on measurements of the change in resonance fluorescence intensity of ultracold atoms as the exciting UV radiation frequency passes through the Rydberg transition frequency. The energies of various nS configurations are obtained in a broad range of the principal quantum number n from 38 to 165. The values of the quantum defect and ionization energy obtained in experiments and predicted theoretically are discussed.

Measurement of the lithium 10p fine structure interval and absolute energy

Paul Oxley, Patrick Collins

We report a measurement of the fine structure interval of the $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ $10p$ atomic state with a precision significantly better than previous measurements of fine structure intervals of Rydberg $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ $p$ states. Our result of $74.97(74)$ MHz provides an experimental value for the only $n=10$ fine structure interval which is yet to be calculated. We also report a measurement of the absolute energy of the $10p$ state and its quantum defect, which are, respectively, $42379.498(23){\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ and $0.04694(10)$. These results are in good agreement with recent calculations.

Calculations of high Rydberg states for the lithium atom

Chao Chen, Xiao-Ying Han, Jiaming Li

We present calculations of high Rydberg states for the lithium atom by two different theoretical methods. The first method is based on the $R$-matrix theory to obtain the energy levels and the quantum defects for the $1{s}^{2}nd\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}D$ and $1{s}^{2}nf\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}^{2}F$ states and their adjacent continuum states. Then the quantum defect functions of the two channels are obtained which vary smoothly with energy based on quantum defect theory. The second method is based on the full core plus correlation method. Our results are compared with data in the literatures; especially the results of the $R$-matrix method are in excellent agreement with microwave measurements for the lithium atom.

Resonance measurements of d−f and d−g intervals in lithium Rydberg states

William E. Cooke, Thomas F. Gallagher, R. M. Hill +1 more

Using a laser-excitation, optical-detection scheme, we have observed microwave transitions from the $\mathrm{nd}$ to the $\mathrm{nf}$ and $\mathrm{ng}$ orbital levels in lithium states with principal quantum number $n$ from 7 to 11. These measurements yield precise values for the $d$, $f$, and $g$ state fine-structure intervals as well as $d\ensuremath{-}f$ and $d\ensuremath{-}g$ energy separations. Within the accuracy of these measurements, the fine structures are found to be hydrogenic. The dipole polarizability of the ${\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$ core is determined from the $d\ensuremath{-}f$ and $d\ensuremath{-}g$ energy splittings. The $d\ensuremath{-}f$ intervals are compared to pseudopotential calculations.

Forbidden 2P–nP and 2P–nF transitions in the energy spectrum of ultracold Rydberg lithium-7 atoms

Boris B. Zelener, Sergey A. Saakyan, Vladimir A. Sautenkov +3 more

Forbidden 2 P – nP and 2 P – nF transitions in the ranges of the principal quantum number n = 42–114 and n = 38–48 have been detected in the optical spectra of ultracold highly excited lithium-7 atoms. The presence of forbidden transitions is due to induced external electric fields. The quantum defects and ionization energy obtained in various experiments and predicted theoretically have been discussed.
