Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study the mixed linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) and H∞ optimal control problem for linear quantum stochastic systems, where the controller itself is also a quantum system, often referred to as ‘coherent feedback controller’. A lower bound of the LQG control is proved. Then two different methods, rank-constrained linear matrix inequality method and genetic algorithm are for controller design. A passive system (cavity) and a non-passive one (degenerate parametric amplifier) demonstrate the effectiveness of these two proposed algorithms.

Extended LMI approach to coherent quantum LQG control design

Shi Wang, M. R. James

A coherent quantum controller is itself a quantum system that is required to be physically realizable. Thus, additional non-linear and linear constraints must be imposed on the coefficients of a physically realizable quantum controller, which differs the quantum Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) design from the standard LQG problem. The purpose of this paper is to propose one numerical procedure based on extended linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach and new physical realizability conditions proposed in [14] to design a coherent quantum controller. The extended synthesis linear matrix inequalities are, in addition to new analysis tools, less conservative in comparison to the conventional counterparts since the optimization variables related to the system parameters in extended LMIs are independent of the symmetric Lyapunov matrix. These features may be useful in the optimal design of quantum optical networks. For comparison, we apply our numerical procedure to the same example given in [9].

Coherent feedback $H^\infty$ control of quantum linear systems

Guofeng Zhang, Ian R. Petersen

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the coherent feedback $H^\infty$ control problem for linear quantum systems. A key contribution is a simplified design methodology that guarantees closed-loop stability and a prescribed level of disturbance attenuation. It is shown that for general linear quantum systems, a physically realizable quantum controller can be obtained by solving at most four Lyapunov equations. In the passive case, a necessary and sufficient condition is provided in terms of two uncoupled pairs of Lyapunov equations. These results represent a significant simplification over the standard approach, which requires solving two coupled algebraic Riccati equations. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through two typical quantum optical devices: an empty optical cavity and a degenerate parametric amplifier. These results provide a computationally efficient procedure for the robust and optimal control of quantum optical and optomechanical systems.

Design of observer-based LQG controller via simulated annealing algorithm

Dong He, Zibo Miao

This paper is concerned with designing linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) controller based on coherent quantum observer. In more concrete terms, we aim to design a stabilizing coherent quantum controller, which possesses the property of a coherent quantum observer, for a linear quantum plant in order to minimize a mean-square cost for the closed-loop quantum feedback system. In contrast to previous established work, we give a numerical approach to solving this problem via simulated annealing algorithm. Moreover, an illustrative example of designing locally optimal coherent quantum LQG controller are provided in order to demonstrate the algorithm performance proposed in the paper.

LQG/H∞ control of linear quantum stochastic systems

Chuanxin Bian, Guofeng Zhang

The purpose of this paper is to investigate an efficient coherent controller design scheme for the general mixed LQG/H∞control problem of the linear quantum stochastic systems. To solve the specific difficulty of the physical realizability constraints, the problem is reformulated as a rank constraint LMI problem, and numerical solution can be attained by using Matlab and softwares therein.

Direct and Indirect Couplings in Coherent Feedback Control of Linear Quantum Systems

Guofeng Zhang, M. R. James

The purpose of this paper is to study and design direct and indirect couplings for use in coherent feedback control of a class of linear quantum stochastic systems. A general physical model for a nominal linear quantum system coupled directly and indirectly to external systems is presented. Fundamental properties of stability, dissipation, passivity, and gain for this class of linear quantum models are presented and characterized using complex Lyapunov equations and linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Coherent H∞and LQG synthesis methods are extended to accommodate direct couplings using multistep optimization. Examples are given to illustrate the results.
