Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to study and design direct and indirect couplings for use in coherent feedback control of a class of linear quantum stochastic systems. A general physical model for a nominal linear quantum system coupled directly and indirectly to external systems is presented. Fundamental properties of stability, dissipation, passivity, and gain for this class of linear quantum models are presented and characterized using complex Lyapunov equations and linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). Coherent H∞and LQG synthesis methods are extended to accommodate direct couplings using multistep optimization. Examples are given to illustrate the results.

Robust Stability Control for a Class of Uncertain Quantum Systems Through Direct and Indirect Couplings

Chengdi Xiang

In this paper, a class of uncertain quantum systems with uncertainties in the interaction Hamiltonian is connected with a coherent controller through direct and indirect couplings. The aim of the paper is to design a robust coherent stability controller to make the closed-loop system robustly mean square stable. A sufficient and necessary condition is presented to build a connection between robust control design with uncertain parameters and scaled control design without uncertain parameters. This condition is also considered for a special class of linear passive quantum systems. A numerical procedure is proposed to obtain explicit expression for parameters of the desired coherent controller using linear matrix inequality, multi-step optimization methods and physical realizability conditions.

Mixed LQG and $H_\infty$ Coherent Feedback Control for Linear Quantum Systems

Cui, Lei, Zhiyuan Dong, Guofeng Zhang +1 more

The purpose of this paper is to study the mixed linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) and $H_\infty$ optimal control problem for linear quantum stochastic systems, where the controller itself is also a quantum system, often referred to as "coherent feedback controller". A lower bound of the LQG control is proved. Then two different methods, rank constrained linear matrix inequality (LMI) method and genetic algorithm are proposed for controller design. A passive system (cavity) and a non-passive one (degenerate parametric amplifier, DPA) demonstrate the effectiveness of these two proposed algorithms.

Coherent feedback $H^\infty$ control of quantum linear systems

Guofeng Zhang, Ian R. Petersen

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the coherent feedback $H^\infty$ control problem for linear quantum systems. A key contribution is a simplified design methodology that guarantees closed-loop stability and a prescribed level of disturbance attenuation. It is shown that for general linear quantum systems, a physically realizable quantum controller can be obtained by solving at most four Lyapunov equations. In the passive case, a necessary and sufficient condition is provided in terms of two uncoupled pairs of Lyapunov equations. These results represent a significant simplification over the standard approach, which requires solving two coupled algebraic Riccati equations. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through two typical quantum optical devices: an empty optical cavity and a degenerate parametric amplifier. These results provide a computationally efficient procedure for the robust and optimal control of quantum optical and optomechanical systems.

Direct and indirect couplings in the interconnection of open two level quantum systems

Zibo Miao, M. R. James

Recently, the influences and applications of indirect and direct couplings in coherent feedback control of linear quantum stochastic systems have been investigated. However, bilinear quantum stochastic systems escape the realm of the current known results. Furthermore, as fast tunable coupling of a set of two level quantum systems (qubits) with high coherence plays a vital role in quantum computing operations, in this paper we study direct and indirect couplings in the interconnection of qubits. A physical model described by bilinear quantum stochastic differential equations is presented, and physical realizability conditions (necessary and sufficient algebraic constraints) are provided to guarantee these bilinear quantum stochastic differential equations to correspond to the dynamics of directly or indirectly coupled open two level systems. These results shed light on network synthesis of bilinear quantum stochastic systems and coherent control of multiple qubits.
