Abstract

Summary form only given. We have performed a series of measurements of absorption and wave mixing with cold Rb atoms contained in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Contrary to several previous experiments our measurements were taken without switching off the trapping /spl sigma//sup +/-/spl sigma//sup -/ beams, and thus allow for a direct probing of MOT conditions.

Competition of magneto-optical and optical lattice trapping

Maria Brzozowska, Tomasz Brzozowski, Jerzy Zachorowski +1 more

Measurements are reported that probe the redistribution of cold /sup 85/Rb atoms between a continuously working magneto-optical trap (MOT) and 1D optical lattice imposed over it. The performed procedure provides a simple and versatile way of a real-time, nondestructive monitoring of the cold atom transfer from the non-localized MOT phase into the optical lattice.

Probe spectroscopy of cold rubidium atoms in MOT

Vasily M. Entin, I. I. Ryabtsev

The experimental results of the probe spectroscopy of laser cooled Rb atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT) are presented. The absorption spectra of the probe transition were expected to be significantly different, and indications of coherent population trapping were expected for the dark repumping transition.

Four-wave mixing in a driven cold atomic system

George C. Cardoso, J. W. R. Tabosa, V. Lorent

Summary form only given. We report on the observation of four wave mixing (FWM) in a sample of cold cesium atoms in a magneto optical trap (MOT), where the trapping beams also play the role of the dressing field. The trapping and the FWM beams are provided by a stabilized Ti:sapphire laser. However, the FWM beams have the same linear polarization in contrast with the opposite circular polarizations of the counterpropagating trapping beams.

High Resolution Spectroscopy of Cold, Trapped Atoms

Tomasz Brzozowski, Maria Brzozowska, Jerzy Zachorowski +1 more

Pump-probe spectroscopy of cold, trapped atoms is discussed with particular attention to mechanisms specific for cold atoms and potential diagnostics applications. The discussion is illustrated with experimental results obtained with 85 Rb atoms trapped in a magneto-optical trap. Most important applications are non-destructive, real-time velocimetry (thermometry) and analysis of optical lattice dynamics.

Measurement of /sup 85/Rb 27D lifetime using a sample of cold atoms

A.L. de Oliveira, R. Zanon, K. M. F. Magalhães +1 more

Summary form only given. In the late 1990s the idea of using trapped neutral atoms to produce cold Rydberg atoms has drawn special attention. Conventional techniques to study Rydberg atoms using thermal atoms have limitations imposed by velocity dependent and collisional effects. With the advent of the magneto-optical trap (MOT) cold samples of Rydberg atoms, which are naturally Doppler-free, can now be produced. In this work we present the measurement of /sup 80/Rb 27D Rydberg state by field ionization using trapped atoms.

The aim of this paper is to realize excitation in a small volume, development of diagnostic methods for cold Rydberg atoms, spectroscopy of the microwave transitions between Rydberg states in the presence of the magneto-optical trap (MOT) quadrupole magnetic field, as well as observation of dipole-dipole interaction of a small number of Rydberg atoms.
