Abstract

We present the full-optical realization of spectrum analyzer system based on electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) and Fabry-Perot interferometer. In this system, the index of refraction variation due to variation of the coupling field intensity in the EIT process can be used for detection of the incident light components in the frequency domain. For extracting the frequency component, the transmission coefficient of the Fabry-Perot interferometer is used. Our proposed system can monitor the incident spectrum content at least for 5-THz bandwidth.

Graphene-based electromagnetically induced transparency with coupling Fabry–Perot resonators

Huawei Zhuang, Fanmin Kong, Kang Li +1 more

We investigate the plasmonic analog of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) using two adjacent graphene-based Fabry-Perot (F-P) resonators side coupling to a nanoribbon waveguide. By the coupling mode theory in time and F-P resonant model, the destructive interference from the coupling of the two F-P resonators results in the EIT-like optical response. The induced peak and width of the transparency window can be dynamically manipulated by varying the coupling distance of the two resonators, and the transparent window is easily shifted by tuning the resonator length or the chemical potential of the graphene nanoribbon. In order to verify the characteristics of slow light, the group index profile is analyzed at different coupling distances. The proposed graphene-based EIT-like system could open up new opportunities for potential applications in plasmonic slow light and optical information buffering devices.

Implementation of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Metamaterial Controlled with Auxiliary Waves

Toshihiro Nakanishi, Masao Kitano

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) has been extensively investigated in atomic systems, to control transmission through optical components and the velocities of ``slow light'' packets. The authors realize EIT using a metamaterial that turns transparent with the incidence of an auxiliary electromagnetic wave, in the same manner as from the original, atomic EIT effect. This approach could lead to applications including the storage of electromagnetic waves (the ultimate slowing of light) across a wide frequency range for optical computing.

Electromagnetically induced-transparency-like spectrum in an add/drop interferometer

Kaiyang Wang, Changqiu Yu, Xuenan Zhang +3 more

We propose a single-ring-resonator-based add/drop interferometer and theoretically investigate the transmission characteristics. Due to coherent interference of two resonant pathways, an electromagnetically induced-transparency (EIT)-like spectrum is produced and the line shapes of the transmission spectra are tunable by controlling the coupling coefficients between the waveguide and ring resonator. We observe the EIT-like behavior in a fiber system which agrees well with the theoretical analysis. The proposed configuration has potential applications in tunable delay lines.

Plasmonic metamaterial for electromagnetically induced transparency analogue and ultra-high figure of merit sensor

Dong Wu, Yumin Liu, Li Yu +7 more

In this work, using finite-difference time-domain method, we propose and numerically demonstrate a novel way to achieve electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon in the reflection spectrum by stacking two different types of coupling effect among different elements of the designed metamaterial. Compared with the conventional EIT-like analogues coming from only one type of coupling effect between bright and dark meta-atoms on the same plane, to our knowledge the novel approach is the first to realize the optically active and precise control of the wavelength position of EIT-like phenomenon using optical metamaterials. An on-to-off dynamic control of the EIT-like phenomenon also can be achieved by changing the refractive index of the dielectric substrate via adjusting an optical pump pulse. Furthermore, in near infrared region, the metamaterial structure can be operated as an ultra-high resolution refractive index sensor with an ultra-high figure of merit (FOM) reaching 3200, which remarkably improve the FOM value of plasmonic refractive index sensors. The novel approach realizing EIT-like spectral shape with easy adjustment to the working wavelengths will open up new avenues for future research and practical application of active plasmonic switch, ultra-high resolution sensors and active slow-light devices.

Electromagnetically induced transparency-like effect in microring-Bragg gratings based coupling resonant system

Zecen Zhang, Geok Ing Ng, Ting Hu +5 more

An all-pass microring-Bragg gratings (APMR-BG) based coupling resonant system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to generate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like transmission for the first time. The coupling between two light path ways in the micro-ring resonator and the Fabry-Pérot (F-P) resonator formed by two sections of Bragg gratings gives rise to the EIT-like spectrum. This system has the advantage of a small footprint consisting of only one microring resonator and one bus waveguide with Bragg gratings. It also has a large fabrication tolerance as the overlap requirement between the resonance wavelengths of the microring and the F-P resonator is more relaxed. The two most important properties of the EIT-like transmission namely the insertion loss (IL) and the full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) have been analytically investigated by utilizing the specially developed model based on the transfer matrix method. The APMR-BG based coupling resonant system was fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The EIT-like transmission with an extinction ratio (ER) of 12 dB, a FWHM of 0.077 nm and a quality factor (Q factor) of 20200 was achieved, which agree well with the simulated results based on our numerical model. A slow light with a group delay of 38 ps was also obtained.
