Abstract

In this paper, we propose a construction method of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes with multi-weight circulants (MQC-LDPC codes) which is suitable for high-rate LDPC codes with moderate length. MQC-LDPC codes can achieve better degree distributions, Hamming weight distributions, and stopping set weight distributions than conventional QC-LDPC codes with single-weight circulants (SQC-LDPC codes). Within the same framework, we generalize and simplify the error minimization progressive edge growth (EMPEG) algorithm for supporting the structure with multi-weight circulants. Simulation results show that the constructed MQC-LDPC codes offer better performance at both high and low signal to noise ratio (SNR) regions in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels than the conventional SQC-LDPC codes defined in 802.11ad and 802.16e.

A new parity structure with multi-weight circulants for QC LDPC codes

Hosung Park, Seokbeom Hong, Jong‐Seon No +1 more

The block dual-diagonal (BDD) parity structure is widely adopted in many practical irregular quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. These QC LDPC codes have good error-correcting performance in waterfall region but usually show relatively high error floors in low error rate region. In this paper, by using multi-weight circulants, a new BDD structure is proposed for the parity part of irregular QC LDPC codes to lower error floors and support efficient encoding. Since the parity part of parity-check matrices has flexible degree distribution with the aid of multi-weight circulants, QC LDPC codes with the proposed BDD structure can have large minimum Hamming distance compared to those with the conventional BDD structure, especially, in the low-rate case. Simulation results show that QC LDPC codes with the proposed BDD structure have lower error floor than those with the conventional BDD structure.

Optimized Construction of Short and High Rate Protograph QC-LDPC Codes

Jianrong Bao, Xiaorong Xu, Chao Liu +2 more

To obtain efficient and pragmatic channel codes high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), an optimized construction of short and high rate protograph quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is presented. Based on an optimized protograph template, the code framework is firstly produced by the extensions of the variable nodes. By enlarging the dimension of the sub-matrices related to the protograph framework, the base quasi-cyclic (QC) matrix is generated with required code rate and length. Then, the elements in the base matrix are split with even smaller square sub-matrices of the same row and column weights. In this procedure, a progressive edge growth (PEG) algorithm is employed to find the optimized positions of the QC submatrices, which brings larger girth for better code performance. Also the circulant offsets in all QC sub-matrices are optimally searched by a QC improved approximated cycle extrinsic message degree (QCI-ACE) algorithm, which improves the relationship of the unavoidable loops in the code's Tanner graph and thus it improves the error floor. Simulation results show that the codes produced by the proposed method demonstrate quite good bit error rate (BER) performance. In addition, they exhibit good properties of high spectrum efficiency by the high code rate, as well as the low complexity by the short code length. Therefore, the proposed code construction can be efficiently applied in the design of short and high rate protograph QC-LDPC codes with high rate and rational complexity.

Construction of High-Rate Regular Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes Based on Cyclic Difference Families

Hosung Park, Seokbeom Hong, Jong‐Seon No +1 more

For a high-rate case, it is difficult to randomly construct good low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes of short and moderate lengths because their Tanner graphs are prone to have short cycles. Also, the existing high-rate quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes can be constructed only for very restricted code parameters. In this paper, based on special classes of cyclic difference families, we propose a new construction method of high-rate regular QC LDPC codes having parity-check matrices consisting of a single row of circulants with column-weight 3 or 4. The proposed QC LDPC codes can be constructed for various code rates and lengths including the minimum achievable length for given column-weight and design rate under girth 6. It is observed that the parity-check matrices of the proposed QC LDPC codes have full rank for column-weight 3 and just one redundant row for column-weight 4. It is shown that the error correcting performance of the proposed QC LDPC codes of short and moderate lengths is almost the same as that of the existing ones through numerical analysis.

Variable-Weight Block Dual-Diagonal Structure for Low-Rate QC LDPC Codes With Low Error Floors

Hosung Park, Hee-Youl Kwak, Seokbeom Hong +2 more

Irregular quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with the block dual-diagonal (BDD) parity structure are widely adopted in many communication standards because the BDD structure supports an efficient encoding and many degree-2 variable nodes inside are adequate for the construction of mid- to high-rate codes. However, we observe that low-rate irregular QC LDPC codes with the BDD parity structure inherently contain too many degree-2 variable nodes and suffer from error floors in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. In this paper, a generalized BDD structure including double-weight circulants as well as circulant permutation matrices is proposed for low-rate irregular QC LDPC codes with low error floors which is achieved with a little bit giving up error performance in the waterfall region. When constructing the parity part of a code with the generalized BDD structure, the portion of double-weight circulants is variable so that the resulting LDPC code can achieve a desired degree distribution including degrees 2 and 3 while supporting the efficient encoding. We show that low-rate QC LDPC codes constructed with the proposed BDD structure have better theoretical properties and lower error floor than those with the conventional BDD structure.

QC-LDPC Codes Construction by Concatenating of Circulant Matrices as Block-Columns

Mohammad Hesam Tadayon, Mohammad Mohammadi

In this paper a new low complexity method for constructing binary quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes is introduced. In the proposed method, each block-column of the parity check matrix H is made by a circulant matrix in a way that the associated Tanner graph is free of cycle four. Each circulant matrix in H is made by a generator column. The generator columns should be selected in a way that each associated circulant matrix and every two distinct circulant matrices are free of cycle four. The generator columns are made by row distance sets. An algorithm for generating distance sets and obtaining circulant matrices with columns of weight three is presented separately. Simplicity of construction and having a good flexible family of quasi cyclic LDPC codes both in rate and length are the main properties of the proposed method. The performance of the proposed codes is compared with that of the random-like and Array LDPC codes over an AWGN channel. Simulation results show that from the performance perspective, the constructed codes are competitive with random-like and Array LDPC codes.

An improved algorithm for constructing QC-LDPC codes based on the PEG algorithm

Zhiyong Fan, Weibo Zhang, Xingcheng Liu +1 more

The Progressive edge-growth (PEG) algorithm was proven to be a simple and effective approach in designing Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. However, the Tanner graph constructed with the PEG algorithm is non-structured, which leads to random distributions of the positions of 1's in the corresponding parity-check matrix. In this paper, an improved algorithm based on the PEG algorithm for constructing quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes is proposed. The proposed algorithm can eliminate short cycles efficiently and gain low error-floors. What is more important, the proposed QC-LDPC codes construction method is hardware-friendly because of its quasi-cyclic structure. Our simulation results demonstrate that the codes constructed with the proposed algorithm has better performance than the PEG algorithm over the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and Rayleigh flat fading channel.
