Abstract

We propose a scheme for generating frequency-correlated two-photon states via Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion in periodically poled nonlinear integrated-optic waveguides. A method to differentiate such states from traditional frequency anti-correlated photon-pair sources is discussed.

Controllable frequency entanglement via auto-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Zachary Walton, Mark C. Booth, Alexander V. Sergienko +2 more

A method for generating entangled photons with controllable frequency correlation via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is presented. The method entails initiating counterpropagating SPDC in a single-mode nonlinear waveguide by pumping with a pulsed beam perpendicular to the waveguide. The method offers several advantages over other schemes, including the ability to generate frequency-correlated photon pairs regardless of the dispersion characteristics of the system.

We show that counterpropagating phase-matching reached in photonic crystal waveguides, without periodic poling, can be used in spontaneous parametric down-conversion to engineer the generation of photon pairs factorizable in the spectral degree of freedom.

Counter-propagating photon pair generation in a nonlinear waveguide

Kai-Hong Luo, Vahid Ansari, Marcello Massaro +5 more

Counter-propagating parametric conversion processes in non-linear bulk crystals have been shown to feature unique properties for efficient narrowband frequency conversion. In quantum optics, the generation of photon pairs with a counter-propagating parametric down-conversion process (PDC) in a waveguide, where signal and idler photons propagate in opposite directions, offers unique material-independent engineering capabilities. However, realizing counter-propagating PDC necessitates quasi-phase-matching (QPM) with extremely short poling periods. Here, we report on the generation of counter-propagating single-photon pairs in a self-made periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period on the same order of magnitude as the generated wavelength. The single photons of the biphoton state bridge GHz and THz bandwidths with a separable joint temporal-spectral behavior. Furthermore, they allow the direct observation of the temporal envelope of heralded single photons with state-of-the art photon counters.

Counterpropagating entangled photons in a periodically poled nonlinear waveguide

Mark C. Booth, Mete Atatüre, Giovanni Di Giuseppe +3 more

Entangled photons, which may be generated through the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a crystal with /spl chi//sup (2)/ nonlinearity, have long been in the spotlight for quantum-optics experiments. The generation of entangled photons by quasi-phase matching (QPM) in lithium niobate offers the promise of increased photon-pair production and, with the integration of a waveguide structure, control of the spatial characteristics of the down-converted photons. It turns out that the use of a waveguide structure, in conjunction with periodic poling to achieve quasi-phase matching, offers another critically important feature: the possibility of generating counterpropagating signal and idler photons. We consider the conditions required for generating counterpropagating photon beams and explore some of the unique properties of this source of light using a periodically poled LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide.

Direct generation of two frequency-entangled photon pairs by quasi-phase-matched parametric down-conversion

Masayuki Hojo, Kōichiro Tanaka

Entangled photon pairs have attracted many interests from the view of quantum science and technologies. However, there are still several technical issues remaining in the conventional generation method, such as complexity and inefficiency. Here we propose a simple scheme to generate frequency-entangled photon pairs via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalite. Our method will open a way to construct a compact and efficient source of entangled photons for quantum sensing.
