Abstract

We experimentally studied the dynamic behavior of conversion from self-defocusing to equivalent “self-focusing” in LiNbO3:Fe crystal under certain experiment conditions. Its physical mechanism is the consequence of both the double-Phase conjugate Fabry-Perot interference cavity and photorefractive effect. It is possible to form bright spatial solitons in self-defocusing medium by the effect of dynamic conversion.

The dynamic conversion from self-defocusing to self-focusing and the phase conjugate bright spatial soliton*

Liu Si-Min, Dayun Wang, Zhao Hong-E +6 more

We have further studied experimentally and theoretically the process of conversion from self-defocusing to self-focusing in LiNbO—3:Fe crystals, which was reported in Acta Phys.Sin.[STHZ]50[STBZ] 483. Based on our experimental result, we have proposed a new type of theoretical model of phase conjugate resonant cavity, analyzed the role of the cavity in the process of conversion from self-defocusing to selffocusing. We have also proposed a new type of bright spatial soliton, i.e.,the phase conjugate bright spatial soliton, and indicated that the bright spatial soliton is a mode in the phase conjugate resonate cavity.

Photorefractive beam-fanning effect and self-pulsations in coated LiNbO_3 slabs

G. Zartov, T. Tenev, Krassimir P. Panajotov +4 more

We investigate the dynamical behavior of optical Fabry-Perot resonators consisting of LiNbO3 slabs (x and c cut) that are coated with different (absorbing or lossless) dielectric multilayers deposited on both sides of the slabs. Bistable switching is observed experimentally. The buildup of beam fanning with time leads to destructive interference for a portion of the incident beam, inducing a change in absorption and heating, hence to switching off. As a result, self-pulsations appear whose frequency depends strongly on the input light intensity, the spot size, and the focusing. Switching and self-pulsations are not observed in the case of lossless coatings or for bare LiNbO3 slabs, although strong photorefractive beam fanning is still present. We also study the influence of the incident-beam characteristics (width and focusing) on the beam-fanning process and the pulsating behavior.

Stationary Photorefractive Self-Pump Phase-Conjugation with Stimulated Backward Scattering in LiNbO 3 :Fe Crystals

Jingjun Xu, Xin-zheng Zhang, Qian Sun +4 more

Stationary photorefractive self-pumped phase-conjugation with one four-wave-mixing interaction region, stimulated by the photorefractive amplified backward scattering, is obtained in LiNbO 3 :Fe crystals, in which the strong backward scattered light is gotten by putting a scattering particle on the backface of the sample. Even though its reflectivities are not high (its temporal and stationary reflectivities are 10% and 3%, respectively), due to the low electrooptic coefficients of LiNbO 3 :Fe crystals, our experimental results prove that this mechanism is effective and simple comparing with the "cat" self-pumped phase-conjugator.

Dynamical effects in photorefractive Fabry-Perot resonators

T. Tenev, G. Zartov, Rumiana A. Peyeva +3 more

We investigate polarization and intensity all-optical bi- and tri-stability in interference structures that include both a birefringent LiNbO3 layer of different crystallographic orientations and an absorbing layer. The origin of this multistability is the thermo-optical nonlinearity present in the structures. Regenerative pulsations are demonstrated using the electro-optical and the photorefractive properties of the LiNbO3 crystal. The unstable dynamical behavior is explained heuristically as being due to competing nonlinearities.

An analogue to sound propagation in a nonlinear Fabry-Perot cavity

J. Boyce, R. Y. Chiao

Summary form only given. The phenomena of self-focusing and defocusing in nonlinear optics can be viewed as arising from interactions between photons when the light propagation is paraxial and the Kerr nonlinearity is fast. We investigate one novel consequence of this, the existence of sound-like propagating photon density waves in a planar Fabry-Perot cavity containing a self-defocusing (n/sub 2/<0) nonlinear medium.

Dynamics of optical TE to TM mode conversion in LiNbO3 channel waveguides

Juan Francisco Lam, Huan W. Yen

We report an analysis of the phenomenon of TE to TM mode conversion in LiNbO3 waveguides. The process is a consequence of the photorefractivity associated with the tensor character of the photovoltaic effect. We predict the existence of a nonlinear phase shift during the energy transfer process as well as a threshold behavior in the dynamics of energy exchange.
