Abstract

We numerically investigate the dynamics of inward circular finite-energy Airy beams carrying different orbital angular momentum (OAM) numbers in a close-Λ three-level atomic vapor with the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window. We report that due to the EIT induced by the microwave field, the transverse intensity distribution properties of Airy beam can be feasibly manipulated and modulated through adjusting OAM numbers l and the frequency detuning, as well as the propagation distance, in the multi-level atomic systems. What’s more, the rotation of the beam also can be observed with different positions in atomic ensembles. The investigation may provide a useful tool for studying particle manipulation, signal processing and propagation in graded-index (GRIN) fibers.

Propagation of two-dimensional Airy vortex beams in electromagnetically induced transparent rubidium atomic vapor

W. Li, Zhirong Liu

Abstract This study investigates the propagation properties of two-dimensional Airy vortex beams in an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium, based on a four-level rubidium atomic vapor system controlled by dual coupling Rabi frequencies. By establishing the ABCD transmission matrix of the EIT medium and employing the Collins integral formula, analytical expression for the propagation of the Airy vortex beam in the EIT medium is derived. Using the obtained analytical solution, this study further examines the beam’s intensity distribution, phase evolution characteristics, and their dependencies on several key parameters such as transverse scale, truncation factor, and vortex center position. Results demonstrate that the intensity of the Airy vortex beam can be modulated by the coupling Rabi frequency: with the change of the coupling Rabi frequency, the Airy vortex beam will be focused, and the main lobe will form a quasi-focus, accompanied by the reproduction of phase singularities. Moreover, the transverse deflection of the beam will be reduced when the coupled Rabi frequency is increased. At the same time, the vortex position, truncation factor and transverse scale also affect the field intensity distribution of the beam. These research results could have potential application value in the fields of optical bullets and optical micromanipulation.

Manipulation of Coherent Optical Phenomena and the Generation of Orbital Angular Momentum-Based Four-Wave Mixing Signal Using Structured Light

Samim Akhtar, Jayanta K. Saha, Md. Mabud Hossain

Abstract We study various coherent optical properties, e.g., two-photon electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and three-photon electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption (TPEIT/TPEIA), in a four-level ladder (Ξ)-type system of 87Rb atoms, where the probe and control fields are Gaussian-shaped laser beams and the pump field is structured laser beam. Additionally, the generated four-wave mixing (FWM) signal has been studied. Interestingly, it is found that the generated FWM signal is spatially structured along with the azimuthal phase, which carries the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light. It is also observed that the coherent optical responses (EIT, TPEIT/TPEIA, and FWM signals) can be manipulated by utilizing the OAM number of the pump beam as a control knob.

Optical storage of circular airy beam in atomic vapor

Hong 虹 Chang 常, Xin 欣 Yang 杨, Yan 燕 Ma 马 +5 more

Abstract The realization of quantum storage of spatial light field is of great significance to the construction of high-dimensional quantum repeater. In this paper, we experimentally realize the storage and retrieval of circular Airy beams (CABs) by using the Λ -type three-level energy system based on the electromagnetically induced transparency in a hot rubidium atomic vapor cell. The weak probe beam field is modulated with phase distribution of CABs by a spatial light modulator. We store the probe circular Airy beam (CAB) into the rubidium atomic vapor cell and retrieve it after the demanded delay. We quantitatively analyze the storage results and give corresponding theoretical explanations. Moreover, we investigate the autofocusing and self-healing effect of the retrieved CAB, which indicates that the properties and beam shape of CAB maintain well after storage. Our work will have potential applications in the storage of high-dimensional quantum information, and is also useful for improving the channel capacities of quantum internet.

Angular momentum conversion in the influence of vortex light on electromagnetically induced transparency

Tang Jiangmin, ZHANG Jingtao

In the burgeoning field of light-matter interactions, angular momentum has emerged as a pivotal factor, driving innovative research directions. This study delves into the interaction dynamics between vortex lights and an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) medium, with a primary focus on elucidating the underlying mechanism of angular momentum transfer. Through comprehensive theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, it is demonstrated that when the probe field carries orbital angular momentum (OAM), the dispersion and absorption characteristics of the EIT medium undergo periodic modulation. This modulation is intricately determined by the azimuthal phase and topological charge of the beam. Notably, the OAM in the driving field exerts no such influence on the medium's properties. Leveraging vortex phase plates (VPPs) or spatial light modulators (SLMs) to manipulate the tunable OAM enables dynamic control over the EIT effect. This breakthrough not only deepens our understanding of light-matter interactions at the quantum level but also unlocks new avenues for high-dimensional quantum information processing and advanced optical communication technologies.
