Abstract

The spontaneous emission from a microwave-driven four-level atom embedded in an anisotropic photonic crystal is studied. Due to the modified density of state (DOS) in the anisotropic photonic band gap (PBG) and the coherent control induced by the coupling fields, spontaneous emission can be significantly enhanced when the position of the spontaneous emission peak gets close to the band gap edge. As a result of the closed-loop interaction between the fields and the atom, the spontaneous emission depends on the dynamically induced Autler–Townes splitting and its position relative to the PBG. Interesting phenomena, such as spectral-line suppression, enhancement and narrowing, and fluorescence quenching, appear in the spontaneous emission spectra, which are modulated by amplitudes and phases of the coherently driven fields and the effect of PBG. This theoretical study can provide us with more efficient methods to manipulate the atomic spontaneous emission.

Spontaneous emission from Λ-type three-level atom driven by bichromatic field in anisotropic double-band photonic crystals

Kai Ling, Jiang Li, Ren-Gang Wan +1 more

The spontaneous emission property of Λ-type three-level atom driven by the bichromatic field in the anisotropic double-band photonic crystal is calculated by n-times iteration method. The influence of different parameters on atomic spontaneous emission is studied, and the phenomena of atomic spontaneous emission are explained in the dressed state representation. It is found that the spontaneous emission spectra of the atom driven by the bichromatic field presents a multi-peak comb structure. The position of the emission peak is determined by the initial state of the atom, and the interval between the neighboring emission peaks is the detuning δ of the bichromatic field. When the ratio between Rabi frequency intensity and the detuning δ of the bichromatic field remains unchanged, the intensity of each emitted peak remains invariant. The spontaneously emitted peak can be annihilated in the band gap and enhanced near the band edge in the anisotropic photonic crystals. Meanwhile, we also observe the fluorescence quenching phenomenon in the spontaneous emission spectra. The research in this paper provides the theoretical guidance for the control of atomic spontaneous emission.

Spontaneous emission spectrum of a three-level atom embedded in photonic crystal

Liu Guo-Qiang, Jian Wang, Hanzhuang Zhang

The two models of three-level (one upper level and two lower levels, or two upper levels and one lower level) atom embedded in a double-band photonic crystal are adopted. The atomic transitions from the upper levels to the lower levels are assumed to be coupled by the same reservoir which are respectively the isotropic photonic band gap (PBG) modes, the anisotropic PBG modes and the free vacuum modes. The effects of the fine structure of the atomic ground state levels in the model with one upper level and two lower levels and the quantum interferences in the model with two upper levels and one lower level on the spontaneous emission spectrum of an atom are investigated in detail. Most interestingly, it is shown that new spontaneous emission lines are produced from the fine splitting of atomic ground state levels in the isotropic PBG case. The quantum interferences induce additional narrow spontaneous lines near the transition from the empty upper level to the lower level.

Spontaneous emission spectrum of a four-level atom in a double-band photonic crystal

Jian Wang, Dong Yang, Hanzhuang Zhang

The spontaneous emission spectrum from a four-level atom in a double-band photonic crystal has been investigated. We use the model which assumes three atomic transitions. One of the transitions interacts with the free vacuum modes and the other two transitions couple to the modes of the isotropic photonic band gap (PBG), the anisotropic PBG and another free vacuum. The effects of the fine structure of the lower levels on the spontaneous emission spectrum of an atom are investigated in detail in the three cases. New features of four (two) transparencies with two (one) spontaneous emission peaks, resulting from the fine structure of the lower levels of an atom, are predicted in the case of isotropic PBG modes.

Control of spontaneous emission from a laser-driven four-level atom in photonic crystals

Xiangqian Jiang, B Zhang, Xiudong Sun

We study the steady-state behaviour of spontaneous emission of a driven four-level atom embedded in photonic crystals. Considering different initial conditions, we discuss the influence of photonic band gap and detuning of external driving field on the atomic spontaneous emission spectrum. The photonic band gap and external driving field will impact strongly on the atomic spontaneous emission properties. Some interesting phenomena were found such as laser-induced dark line, laser-induced spectral-line narrowing and laser-induced pushing of a dressed state out of the band gap, which can be attributed to the quantum interference effect and control of the external driving field.

Spontaneous emission and radiation properties of a driven four-level atom embedded in an anisotropic PBG

Jiang Li, Han Zhang, Hanzhuang Zhang

The spontaneous emission from a driven four-level tripod atom embedded in an anisotropic photonic crystal is investigated in this paper. We find that time-evolution properties and components of the emitted fields are dependent on the relative position of the upper level of the atom from the band edge and the space between two lower levels. The radiation field emitted by the atom is calculated more accurately. The energy is translated from one form to another with the increase of distance from the atom and the upper level's relative position. The evolution properties and the spontaneous spectrum are also studied. The results analyzed here are consistent with the distribution of emitted fields.

The control of spontaneous emission from a three-level atom in an anisotropic photonic crystal with two asymmetric bands

Xianshan Huang, Hailian Liu, Chengxiang Ding

We theoretically investigate the spontaneous emission light of an excited three-level atom embedded in an anisotropic photonic crystal with two asymmetric bands. The property of spontaneous emission relating to the atomic position in a unit cell of the crystal is described with a position-dependent phase difference. The atomic transition in free space can be manipulated by the other associated transition coupling to photonic crystal. The result shows that the spontaneous emission spectra are effectively shifted and tuned by the atomic position-dependent phase, which results in the asymmetric distribution of the photonic density of states between two bands, and the increasing band can push the emitted light towards the other band. The physical process can be further illuminated through analyzing the emitted field in photonic crystal. The result perhaps offers an interesting route towards tunable photonic devices.
