Abstract

Abstract We investigate the absorptive-dispersive properties of a weak probe field in a four-level asymmetrical double semiconductor quantum well. It is found that the enhanced refraction index without absorption can be easily controlled via adjusting properly the corresponding parameters of the system. Our scheme may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in dispersion compensation and solid-state quantum communication for quantum information processing.

Enhancement of refractive index with amplification in an InGaN/GaN quantum dot nanostructure

Abstract In this letter, we investigated the behaviors of the absorptive–dispersive properties of weak probe light in a four-level InGaN/GaN quantum dot nanostructure. In order to achieve the wave functions and their corresponding energy levels of the mentioned quantum dot nanostructure, Schrödinger and Poisson equations must be solved self consistently for carriers (here electrons) in quantum dots. The enhanced refractive index with amplification can be obtained via adjusting the corresponding controllable parameters such as intensity, detuning and relative phase of the applied fields. Our proposed scheme provides a realistic model for controlling the index of refraction in a quantum dot nanostructure.

An enhanced refractive index with suppressed absorption in a graphene nanostructure under external magnetic field

Ali Raheli, Hamid Reza Hamedi, Mostafa Sahrai

The dispersive-absorptive optical properties of a weak probe field are investigated based on quantum coherence and interference in a Landau-quantized graphene structure. It is found that an enhanced refractive index with vanishing absorption can be obtained in this structure through proper adjusting the controlling parameters of the system. The switching between superluminal and subluminal light propagation is also discussed. Our scheme can be employed in real experiments to develop new types of nanoelectronic devices for realizing all-optical switching process and can have practical application in dispersion compensation and solid-state quantum communication.

Controllable amplification, absorption, and dispersion in double‐cascade‐type four‐level system of multiple quantum wells

Wei Yan, Tao Wang, Xiaoming Li +3 more

Abstract A double‐cascade‐type four‐level system of semiconductor multiple quantum wells (MQWs) was constructed with biexcitons and excitons. The nonlinear optical properties for amplification, absorption, and dispersion of 2‐weak fields in this scheme are investigated. It shows that the amplification, absorption, and dispersion responses of 2‐weak fields can be achieved by appropriately adjusting the relative phase, the probe detuning, and the two control Rabi frequencies. The investigation is much more practical than its atomic counterpart because of its flexible design and the widely adjustable parameters. It may provide a new possibility in technological applications for the light amplifier and optical switch working on quantum coherence effects in MQW solid‐state systems.

Laser-induced diffraction grating in asymmetric double quantum well nanostructure

Forough Bozorgzadeh, Mostafa Sahrai

Abstract We analyze the electromagnetically induced grating in a four-level inverted-Y double quantum well system. Based on the electromagnetically induced transparency, the Fraunhofer diffraction of a weak probe laser field is theoretically investigated. It is shown that the diffraction patterns are sensitive to both the absorptive and dispersive properties of the system. The effect of coupling and pumping fields intensity, frequency detuning, the relative phase of fields and the sample interaction length on diffraction pattern is then discussed. Our scheme may find potential applications in designing the semiconductor quantum well-based photonic devices, such as all-optical switches at low light levels.

Coherent control and enhancement of refractive index in an asymmetric double quantum well

Seyed M. Sadeghi, Henry M. van Driel, James M. Fräser

We propose coherent control and enhancement of the refractive index with zero absorption in an n-type asymmetric double quantum well using intersubband transitions. These effects are caused by quantum coherence and interference whereby a strong infrared laser mixes upper conduction subbands of an intersubband transition with an auxiliary subband. In the ${\mathrm{G}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{A}\mathrm{s}/\mathrm{A}\mathrm{l}}_{x}{\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}\mathrm{As}$ system considered here, an approximately 10% enhancement of the refractive index accompanied with zero absorption occurs at 10.5 \ensuremath{\mu}m, when the system is driven by a 6.2-\ensuremath{\mu}m laser field with an intensity of \ensuremath{\sim}1 ${\mathrm{M}\mathrm{W}/\mathrm{c}\mathrm{m}}^{2}$. The interplay between quantum coherence and electron population dynamics not only causes an enhancement of refractive index similar to that in atomic systems, but can also induce both low positive and negative group velocities.
