International Workshop on Coherent Control of Charge Carrier Dynamics in Semiconductors Held in Chicago, USA on 19-22 May 1998

Walter Poetz

Abstract : The International Workshop on Coherent Control of Charge Carrier Dynamics in Semiconductors was held May 18-22,1998 at the University of Illinois at Chicago. An international and multi-disciplinary group of scientists presented recent results on coherent control phenomena in atoms, molecules, and semiconductors. Pertinent open physical questions, as well as potential technological applications and the future of the field were discussed. Referred proceedings were published under the title Coherent Control in Atoms, Molecules, and Semiconductors, by Kluwer in spring of 1999 (ISPN 0-7923-5649-7)

Coherent control of excitonic excitations in II–VI quantum wells

T. Voss, Hans Georg Breunig, Ilja Rückmann +1 more

Abstract We present results of experimental work in which the coherent‐control technique has been applied to study the coherent manipulation of excitonic polarization in ZnSe quantum‐well samples. We will introduce the linear control of excitonic polarization in pulse‐transmission experiments and afterwards focus on the question if and how the optical transition from the excitonic states to the bound‐biexciton state can be subject to a directed coherent control. The experimental results will be compared to simulations based on a microscopic theory and will also be explained on the base of a phenomenological few‐level model. The overall suitability of coherent control for the investigation of exciton systems in low‐dimensional wide‐gap materials will be discussed. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Coherent control of quantum systems as a resource theory

J. M. Matera, Dario Egloff, Nathan Killoran +1 more

Abstract Control at the interface between the classical and the quantum world is fundamental in quantum physics. In particular, how classical control is enhanced by coherence effects is an important question both from a theoretical as well as from a technological point of view. In this work, we establish a resource theory describing this setting and explore relations to the theory of coherence, entanglement and information processing. Specifically, for the coherent control of quantum systems, the relevant resources of entanglement and coherence are found to be equivalent and closely related to a measure of discord. The results are then applied to the DQC1 protocol and the precision of the final measurement is expressed in terms of the available resources.
