Generation of a superposition of multiple mesoscopic states of radiation in a resonant cavity

Pradyumna K. Pathak, G. S. Agarwal

Using resonant interaction between atoms and the field in a high-quality cavity, we show how to generate a superposition of many mesoscopic states of the field. We study the quasiprobability distributions and demonstrate the nonclassicality of the superposition in terms of the zeros of the $Q$ function as well as the negativity of the Wigner function. We discuss the decoherence of the generated superposition state. We propose homodyne techniques of the type developed by [Auffeves et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 230405 (2003)] to monitor the superposition of many mesoscopic states.

Reservoir engineering of a mechanical resonator: generating a macroscopic superposition state and monitoring its decoherence

Muhammad Asjad, David Vitali

A deterministic scheme for generating a macroscopic superposition state of a nanomechanical resonator is proposed. The nonclassical state is generated through a suitably engineered dissipative dynamics exploiting the optomechanical quadratic interaction with a bichromatically driven optical cavity mode. The resulting driven dissipative dynamics can be employed for monitoring and testing the decoherence processes affecting the nanomechanical resonator under controlled conditions.

Comment on “Generation of a superposition of coherent states in a resonant cavity and its nonclassicality and decoherence”

Gang Ren

Arpita Ghosh and P.K. Das (Can. J. Phys. 86: 811 (2008) doi:10.1139/p08-013 ) derived an analytic expression for the Wigner function of a superposition of coherent state. We point out the incorrectness of this result.
