Reduced complexity decoding algorithms for low-density parity check codes and turbo codes

Jinghu Chen, M.P.C. Fossorier

Iterative decoding techniques have been receiving more and more attentions with the invention of turbo codes and the rediscovery of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. An important aspect in the study of iterative decoding is the tradeoff between decoding performance and complexities. For both LDPC codes and turbo codes, optimum decoding algorithms can provide very good performance. However, complicated operations are involved in the optimum decoding, and prohibit the wide applications of LDPC codes and turbo codes in the next generation digital communication and storage systems. Although there exist sub-optimum decoding algorithms for both LDPC codes and turbo codes, the decoding performance is degraded with the sub-optimum algorithms, and under some circumstances, the gap is very large. This research investigates the reduced complexity decoding algorithms of LDPC codes and turbo codes. For decoding LDPC codes, new algorithms, namely the normalized BP-based algorithm and the offset BP-based algorithm, are proposed. For these two reduced complexity algorithms, density evolution algorithms are derived, and are used to determine the best decoder parameters associated with each of the algorithms. Numerical results show that the new algorithms can achieve near optimum decoding performances for infinite code lengths, and simulation results reveal the same conclusion for short to medium code lengths. In addition to the advantage of low computational complexities, the two new algorithms are less subject to quantization errors and correlation effects than the optimum BP algorithm, and consequently are more suitable for hardware implementation. For a special kind of LDPC codes - the geometric LDPC codes, we propose the normalized APP-based algorithm, which is even more simplified yet still can achieve the near optimum performance. For decoding turbo codes, two new sub-optimum decoding algorithms are proposed. The first is the bi-directional soft-output Viterbi algorithm (bi-SOVA), which is based on utilizing a backward SOYA decoding in addition to the conventional forward one, and can achieve better performance than the uni-directional SOYA. The second is the normalized Max-Log-MAP algorithm, which improves the performance of the Max-Log-MAP decoding by scaling the soft outputs with some predetermined factors.

Memory-efficient turbo decoder architectures for LDPC codes

Mohammad M. Mansour, Naresh R. Shanbhag

In this paper, we propose a turbo decoding message-passing (TDMP) algorithm to decode regular and irregular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. The TDMP algorithm has two main advantages over the commonly employed two-phase message-passing algorithm. First, it exhibits a faster convergence behavior (up to 50% less iterations), and improvement in coding gain (up to an order of magnitude for moderate-to-high SNR and small number of iterations). Second, the corresponding decoder architecture has a significantly reduced memory requirement that amounts to a savings of (75 + 25n//spl Sigma/ node-degrees)% > 75% for code-length n. A decoder architecture featuring the TDNW algorithm is also presented. Furthermore, we propose a new structure on the parity-check matrix of an LDPC code based on permutation matrices aimed at reducing interconnect complexity and improving decoding throughput. In addition, we construct a wide range of LDPC codes based on Ramanujan graphs which possess this structure.

The Decoding Algorithms For Error-Correcting Product Codes Based On Project Geometry Low-Density Parity-Check Codes

Назаров Лев Евгеньевич

The focus of this paper is directed towards the investigation of the characteristics of symbol-by-symbol iterative decoding algorithms for error-correcting block product-codes (block turbo-codes) which enable to reliable information transfer at relatively low received signal/noise and provide high power efficiency. Specific feature of investigated product codes is construction with usage of low-density parity-check codes (LDPC) and these code constructions are in the class of LDPC too. According to this fact the considered code constructions have symbol-by-symbol decoding algorithms developed for total class LDPC codes, namely BP (belief propagation) and its modification MIN_SUM_BP. The BP decoding algorithm is iterative and for implementation the signal/noise is required, for implementation of MIN_SUM_BP decoding algorithm the signal/noise is not required. The resulted characteristics of product codes constructed with usage of LDPC based on project geometry (length of code words, information volume, code rate, error performances) are presented in this paper. These component LDPC codes are cyclic and have encoding and decoding algorithms with low complexity implementation. The computer simulations for encoding and iterative symbol-by-symbol decoding algorithms for the number of turbo-codes with different code rate and information volumes are performed. The results of computer simulations have shown that MIN_SUM_BP decoding algorithm is more effective than BP decoding algorithm for channel with additive white gaussian noise concerning error-performances.
