We have studied the ground-state phase diagram of a two-leg spin ladder with anisotropic ferromagnetic leg couplings under the influence of a symmetry-breaking transverse magnetic field by the exact diagonalization technique. In the case of antiferromagnetic coupling between legs we identified two phase transitions in the plane of magnetic field versus interchain coupling strength. The first corresponds to the transition from the gapped rung-singlet phase to the gapped stripe-ferromagnetic phase. The second represents the transition from the gapped stripe-ferromagnetic phase into the fully polarized ferromagnetic phase.
Abstract. We study the ground state phase diagram of a two-leg spin ladder with anisotropic ferromagnetic leg couplings under the influence of a symmetry breaking transverse magnetic field by the exact diagonalization technique. In the case of antiferromagnetic coupling between legs we identified two phase transitions in the plane of magnetic field vs interchain coupling strength. The first one corresponds to the transition from the gapped rung-singlet phase to the gapped stripe-ferromagnetic phase. The second one represents the transition from the gapped stripe-ferromagnetic phase into the fully polarized ferromagnetic phase. We study the opening of the Haldane gap in two-leg and four-leg anisotropic spin ladders using bosonization and renormalization group methods, and we determine the phase diagram as a function of the interchain coupling and relative anisotropy
Jz/Jxy. It is found that the opening of the Haldane gap is qualitatively different for the two cases considered. For the two-leg ladder the Haldane gap opens for arbitrarily small interchain coupling, independent of
Jz/Jxy, and the Haldane phase exists in a large region of parameter space. For the four-leg ladder the opening of the Haldane gap is strongly dependent on both the interchain coupling as well as
Jz/Jxy, and the Haldane phase exists only in a narrow region about the isotropic antiferromagnet.
Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we have obtained the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder with a ferromagnetic diagonal interaction ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}.$ The boundary between the two phases found in the system, the Haldane phase and the singlet phase, lies in the frustrated area of the parameter space, i.e., both the rung coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and the diagonal coupling ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$ are ferromagnetic. The spin gap is found to be insensitive to the change of the ferromagnetic diagonal coupling strength when the ratio of the rung coupling constant ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ to the leg coupling constant ${J}_{\ensuremath{\Vert}}$ is 0.5, in agreement with the analysis of recent experimental spin susceptibility data.
We investigate an
S=1/2 two-leg spin ladder with a cyclic four-spin exchange interaction whose interaction constant is denoted by
J4, by using the density matrix renormalization group method. The interchain and the intrachain interaction constant are denoted by
Jrung and
Jleg, respectively and assumed to be antiferromagnetic. It turns out that a spin gap between the singlet (
Stotz=0) and the triplet (
Stotz=1) states vanishes at
J4/Jleg≃0.3 for
Jrung=Jleg. This result is in contrast with the fact that the
S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder, that is the case of
Jrung=Jleg,J4=0, has a spin gap for all nonzero value of interchain interaction
Jrung>0. We find a larger value of the correlation length for the spin-pair correlation function than a linear size
L of the system at
J4/Jleg=0.3 and
Jrung=Jleg: the correlation length
ξ is about 204 times of the lattice constant for L=84 for these values of interactions. We also find that the string correlation function decays rather algebraically than exponentially at
J4/Jleg=0.3 and
Jrung=Jleg. These results suggest that there is a quantum phase transition at
J4/Jleg≃0.3 for
Jrung=Jleg. We estimate a phase boundary where the spin gap vanishes in a
J4/Jleg−Jrung/Jleg plane and obtain a consistent result with that by a perturbation theory for
Jrung/Jleg>1.
