Abstract

We investigate an $S=1/2$ two-leg spin ladder with a cyclic four-spin exchange interaction whose interaction constant is denoted by $J_4$, by using the density matrix renormalization group method. The interchain and the intrachain interaction constant are denoted by $J_{rung}$ and $J_{\rm leg}$, respectively and assumed to be antiferromagnetic. It turns out that a spin gap between the singlet ($S_{tot}^z=0$) and the triplet ($S_{tot}^z=1$) states vanishes at $J_4/J_{leg} \simeq 0.3$ for $J_{rung}=J_{leg}$. This result is in contrast with the fact that the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder, that is the case of $J_{rung} \neq J_{leg}, J_4=0$, has a spin gap for all nonzero value of interchain interaction $J_{\rm rung}>0$. We find a larger value of the correlation length for the spin-pair correlation function than a linear size $L$ of the system at $J_4/J_{\rm leg}=0.3$ and $J_{rung}=J_{leg}$: the correlation length $ξ$ is about 204 times of the lattice constant for L=84 for these values of interactions. We also find that the string correlation function decays rather algebraically than exponentially at $J_4/J_{leg}=0.3$ and $J_{rung}=J_{leg}$. These results suggest that there is a quantum phase transition at $J_4/J_{leg} \simeq 0.3$ for $J_{rung}=J_{leg}$. We estimate a phase boundary where the spin gap vanishes in a $J_4/J_{leg}-J_{rung}/J_{leg}$ plane and obtain a consistent result with that by a perturbation theory for $J_{\rm rung}/J_{leg}>1$.

Magnetization plateau in the spin ladder with a four-spin exchange

Tôru Sakai, Yasumasa Hasegawa

The magnetization process of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic spin ladder with the four-spin cyclic exchange interaction at $T=0$ is studied by the exact diagonalization of finite clusters and size scaling analyses. It is found that a magnetization plateau appears at half the saturation value if the ratio of the four- and two-spin exchange coupling constants ${J}_{4}$ is larger than the critical value ${J}_{4c}=0.05\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.04.$ The phase transition with respect to ${J}_{4}$ at ${J}_{4c}$ is revealed to be the Kosterlitz-Thouless type.

Quantum Phase Transitions in Anisotropic Spin Ladders with Antiferromagnetic Rungs

Qiang Gu, Shen JueLian

We apply perturbation theory to study quantum phase transitions in anisotropic two-leg spin ladders with antiferromagnetic rungs in the strong interchain coupling limit. The energy gap is expanded up to the fourth order in the ratio of the intrachain to interchain couplings. The transition point is determined by examing the disappearance of the energy gap. Present results for the anisotropic ferromagnetic-leg spin ladder are consistent qualitatively with the nonlinear -model analysis and in good agreement with the numerical results by the diagonalization method.

Phase diagram of a spin ladder with cyclic four-spin exchange

Andreas Martin Läuchli, Guido Schmid, Matthias Troyer

We present the phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the two leg ladder with cyclic four-spin exchange, determined by a combination of exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group techniques. We find six different phases and regimes: the rung singlet phase, a ferromagnetic phase, two symmetry broken phases with staggered dimers and staggered scalar chiralities, and a gapped region with dominant vector chirality, or collinear spin correlations. We localize the phase transitions and investigate their nature.

Spin-1/2 string correlations and singlet-triplet gaps of frustrated ladders with ferromagnetic (F) legs and alternate F and AF rungs

Chatterjee, Monalisa, Manoranjan Kumar, Z. G. Soos

The frustrated ladder with alternate ferromagnetic(F) exchange $-J_F$ and AF exchange $J_A$ to first neighbors and F exchange $-J_L$ to second neighbors is studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations in systems of $2N$ spins-1/2 with periodic boundary conditions. The ground state is a singlet $(S = 0)$ and the singlet-triplet gap $\varepsilon_T$ is finite for the exchanges considered. Spin-1/2 string correlation functions $g_1(N)$ and $g_2(N)$ are defined for an even number $N$ of consecutive spins in systems with two spins per unit cell; the ladder has string order $g_2(\infty)> 0$ and $g_1(\infty) = 0$. The minimum $N^*$ of $g_2(N)$ is related to the range of ground-state spin correlations. Convergence to $g_2(\infty)$ is from below, and $g_1(N)$ decreases exponentially for $N \geq N^*$. Singlet valence bond (VB) diagrams account for the size dependencies. The frustrated ladder at special values of $J_F$, $J_L$ and $J_A$ reduces to well-known models such as the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and the $J_1-J_2$ model, among others. Numerical analysis of ladders matches previous results for spin-1 gaps or string correlation functions and extends them to spin-1/2 systems. The nondegenerate singlet ground state of ladder is a bond-order wave, a Kekulé VB diagrams at $J_L = J_F/2 \leq J_A$, that is reversed on interchanging $-J_F$ and $J_A$. Inversion symmetry is spontaneously broken in the dimer phase of the $J_1-J_2$ model where the Kekulé diagrams are the doubly degenerate ground states at $J_2/J_1 = 1/2$.

Low-energy properties of spin-1/2 two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders with ferromagnetic diagonal coupling

Ningsheng Zhu, Xiaoqun Wang, Changfeng Chen

Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we have obtained the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder with a ferromagnetic diagonal interaction ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}.$ The boundary between the two phases found in the system, the Haldane phase and the singlet phase, lies in the frustrated area of the parameter space, i.e., both the rung coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and the diagonal coupling ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$ are ferromagnetic. The spin gap is found to be insensitive to the change of the ferromagnetic diagonal coupling strength when the ratio of the rung coupling constant ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ to the leg coupling constant ${J}_{\ensuremath{\Vert}}$ is 0.5, in agreement with the analysis of recent experimental spin susceptibility data.

Spin- 12 string correlations and singlet-triplet gaps of frustrated ladders with ferromagnetic legs and alternate ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic rungs

The frustrated ladder with alternate ferromagnetic exchange $\ensuremath{-}{J}_{F}$ and antiferromagnetic exchange ${J}_{A}$ to first neighbors and ferromagnetic exchange $\ensuremath{-}{J}_{L}$ to second neighbors is studied by exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group calculations in systems of $2N$ spins-$\frac{1}{2}$ with periodic boundary conditions. The ground state is a singlet $(S=0)$ and the singlet-triplet gap ${\ensuremath{\varepsilon}}_{T}$ is finite for the exchanges considered. Spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ string correlation functions ${g}_{1}(N)$ and ${g}_{2}(N)$ are defined for an even number $N$ of consecutive spins in systems with two spins per unit cell; the ladder has string order ${g}_{2}(\ensuremath{\infty})>0$ and ${g}_{1}(\ensuremath{\infty})=0$. The minimum ${N}^{*}$ of ${g}_{2}(N)$ is related to the range of ground-state spin correlations. Convergence to ${g}_{2}(\ensuremath{\infty})$ is from below, and ${g}_{1}(N)$ decreases exponentially for $N\ensuremath{\ge}{N}^{*}$. Singlet valence bond (VB) diagrams account for the size dependencies. The frustrated ladder at special values of ${J}_{F}, {J}_{L}$, and ${J}_{A}$ reduces to well-known models such as the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ model, among others. The nondegenerate singlet ground state of the ladder is a bond-order wave, a Kekul\'e VB diagram at ${J}_{L}={J}_{F}/2\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{A}$, that is reversed on interchanging $\ensuremath{-}{J}_{F}$ and ${J}_{A}$. Inversion symmetry is spontaneously broken in the dimer phase of the ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ model where the Kekul\'e diagrams are the doubly degenerate ground states at ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}=1/2$.
