Nonlinear resonance effects in atomic gases—spontaneous and stimulated electronic Raman scattering of Na atoms excited resonantly atDlines by a tunable dye laser

Masanori Jyumonji, T. Kobayasi, Humio Inaba

A report is given of the first quantitative study of the spontaneous and stimulated electronic Raman scattering by a resonance doublet of the sodium atom excited resonantly at the D 1 and D 2 lines by a tunable dye laser. Theoretical and experimental analyses of the differential scattering cross section and polarization properties at the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies show that the observed scattering is due to a nearly resonant process involving the ground state 3 S 1/2 as the dominant intermediate state. The stimulated Stokes and anti-Stokes scattering lines, which are shifted from the D 1 and D 2 lines by an amount corresponding to the frequency separation between lowest-lying excited doublets 3 P 1/2 and 3 P 3/2 , are observed by exciting a sodium vapor cell with a passively mode-locked dye laser.

Tunable infrared laser generated via stimulated Raman scattering in Cs vapor

R. T. V. Kung, Irving Itzkan

The conversion of a visible dye laser output into tunable infrared (IR) laser radiation via stimulated Raman scattering in Cs vapor was investigated. Small-signal gain, threshold intensity, and conversion efficiency measurements were obtained versus pump laser detuning. Fixed-frequency IR outputs at other wavelengths were also observed. One of these, the7P_{3/2}-5D_{5/2}transition, had a strong lasing component polarized perpendicular to the pump laser polarization. Lasing near the 8523-Å resonance line was attributed to a four-wave parametric interaction as a plausible generation mechanism.

The observation of the competition and suppression for stimulated Raman scattering near the potassium 4S-5P resonance

Hau-wei Wang, Mao-Hong Lu

The competition of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) between 4S-(5P)-5S and 4S-(3D)-5S channels has been observed as a laser is tuned near the 4S-5P resonance in potassium vapour. The experimental results show that SRS only occurs in the 4S-(5P)-5S channel. In this Raman scattering, suppression of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) (5S-4P) has been observed. The influence of the four-wave mixing (FWM) processes on the SRS is discussed. In the 4S-(5P)-3D channel, in the backward direction no detectable emission corresponding to SRS (4S-(5P)-3D) has been observed, so the forward (5P)-3D emission should be FWM, not SRS. The ASE (3D-4P) arises from the ASE (5P-3D), which can be observed in the backward direction.
