Optical bistability and multistability via quantum coherence in chiral molecules

Abstract

The optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) in chiral molecules are investigated by placing the sample into a unidirectional ring cavity. Because of broken mirror symmetry of the effective potential, the chiral molecules have a cyclic three-level Δ-configuration structure, in which one- and two-photon transitions can coexist. We find that the OB is achievable in this system on exact one-, two- and three-photon resonance conditions but absent in the three-level Λ-type system under the two-photon resonance. Moreover, the OM and the switching between OB and OM are also realized by choosing parameters properly. Interestingly, the left- and right-handed chiral molecules exhibit different bistable and multistable behaviors. It is shown that the threshold intensity of OB is strongly dependent on the percentage of the two enantiomers in the mixture. This provides an effective approach to probe molecular chirality and to determine enantiomer excess, which may find potential application in organic chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, etc..

Optical bistability and multistability via both coherent and incoherent fields in a three-level system

Haifeng Xu

Abstract We have investigated the optical bistability and multistability behaviors in a three-level V-type system via both coherent and incoherent fields inside a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that the appearance and disappearance of optical bistability (OB)/optical multistability (OM) can easily be controlled by adjusting systemic parameters. Our scheme opens up a new possibility for realizing transition from OB to OM or vice versa for potential applications in information networks and processing with increased capacity.

Optical bistability and multistability in ladder-type four-level atomic coherence medium

Ai-Xi Chen, Chen De-Hai, Zhiping Wang +1 more

Optical bistability(OB) and optical multistability(OM) behaviour of ladder-type four-level atom in a unidirectional ring cavity driven by three laser fields is studied. Three paths of photon transition are coupled with the laser fields. In this case, the laser field ΩB coupling with two middle levels is very important. When the ΩB is increased, optical bistability threshold significantly decreases and optical multistability appears. The effects of the laser field coupling with two upper levels on optical bistability are also discussed. Furthermore, we analyze the effects of the detuning of probe field and atomic cooperation parameter on OB and OM.

Chirality-dependent optical dipole potential

Seyedeh Hamideh Kazemi, Mohammad Mahmoudi

Abstract In this paper, we show the possibility of spatially separating two opposite enantiomers of chiral molecules, using an optical dipole potential. Because of the broken mirror symmetry of effective potential, chiral molecules have a cyclic three-level Δ-configuration structure. Irradiation of these molecules with three femtosecond laser pulses gives rise to an enantiomer-dependent optical force. Interestingly, considerable differences in the direction of the force felt by the enantiomers have been shown to cause the chirality-dependent optical dipole potential which stably captures only one enantiomeric form. Moreover, the proposed scheme provides a complete control over what kind of molecules, the left- or right-handed ones, can be selectively trapped. Note that we have analyzed the optical force, and specifically the trapping effect, by considering the full interaction Hamiltonian, including both rotating and counter-rotating terms.

Optical bistability in a three-level lambda molecule with permanent dipole moments

Seyyed Hossein Asadpour, HAMID RAHIMPOUR SOLEIMANI

Optical bistability (OB) in a unidirectional ring cavity with a three-level Λ-type molecular system with nonzero permanent dipole moments is discussed. We found that in the (2+2)-transition processes, the permanent dipole moments induced new quantum coherence effects which lead to controlling the OB behavior of the system. Moreover, we showed that the group velocity can be switched from slow to fast or vice versa under specific conditions of difference in permanent dipole moments of the probe transition.

Optical bistability and multistability induced by quantum coherence in diamond germanium-vacancy color centers

Zhang Hong-jun, Gaiying Wang, Dong Sun +2 more

Optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviors are investigated theoretically in a four-level N-type diamond germanium-vacancy (GeV) color center scheme immersed in a unidirectional ring cavity based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). It is found that OB behavior is very sensitive to the system parameters, such as the detunings of probe and coupling fields and the intensities of coupling fields as well as the density of GeV centers, and the thresholds of OB can be controlled via changing these parameters. In addition, we can switch OB to OM by adjusting the intensity of control field and the density of GeV centers or vice versa. Our results may provide some guidance for an all-optical switching, optical communications, and optical logic devices in a solid-state system.

Optical bistability and multistability via atomic coherence in the quasi-Λ-type atomic system

Chen Ai

The steady-state optical bistability(OB) and optical multistability(OM) behavior in the quasi——type atomic system driven by a probe field and a coherent coupling field inside a unidirectional ring cavity are shown, and the effects of coupling-field detuning and coupling-field intensity on the OB and OM behavior are investigated. The transition from OB to OM or vice versa is found by varying the detuning of the coherent coupling field or by adjusting the intensity of the coupling field. The influence of the atomic cooperation parameter on the OM behavior is also discussed.
