Abstract

Optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviors are investigated theoretically in a four-level N-type diamond germanium-vacancy (GeV) color center scheme immersed in a unidirectional ring cavity based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). It is found that OB behavior is very sensitive to the system parameters, such as the detunings of probe and coupling fields and the intensities of coupling fields as well as the density of GeV centers, and the thresholds of OB can be controlled via changing these parameters. In addition, we can switch OB to OM by adjusting the intensity of control field and the density of GeV centers or vice versa. Our results may provide some guidance for an all-optical switching, optical communications, and optical logic devices in a solid-state system.

Multi-Parameter Control of Optical Bistability–Multistability Switching in a Four-Level N-Type Atomic System via Quantum Interference

A. M. Awad, Mohamed I. Nouh, Emad Abdel-Salam

Abstract This work presents a theoretical study of optical bistability (OB) and multistability (OM) in a four-level N-type atomic system embedded in a unidirectional ring cavity, with particular attention to the role of quantum interference (QI) between decay channels. Going beyond earlier reports that focused on single-parameter or cavity-based control without considering quantum interference or multistability, we develop a unified framework investigating how the cooperative parameter C, probe and control field detunings (Δ₂, Δ₃), non-radiative decay rates (γ₀, γ₀₀), quantum interference (P), pump/control Rabi frequencies (Ω₁, Ω₂), and relative phase (φ) collectively govern OB and OM thresholds. Systematic analysis reveals that increasing C broadens hysteresis loops and raises thresholds, thereby enhancing switching stability, while quantum interference significantly lowers the OB threshold, enabling bistability at lower input intensities. Non-radiative decay rates γ₀ and γ₀₀, pump/control Rabi frequencies, and the relative phase φ further provide flexible switching between bistable and multistable regimes. Notably, we demonstrate that OB ↔ OM transitions can be induced through multiple independent pathways beyond phase control alone—including tuning of the cooperative parameter, non-radiative decay rates, and pump/control field intensities—extending the phase-driven switching mechanism established in earlier N-type studies to a broader, multi-parameter control framework. Furthermore, probe and control field detunings (Δ₂, Δ₃) enable dynamic tuning of the system's dispersive and absorptive properties, offering additional control over threshold behavior. These results identify practical routes for designing reconfigurable optical memory, quantum information processors, and all-optical switching devices with enhanced controllability.

Coherent control of optical bistability and multistability in a triple semiconductor quantum well nanostructure

Ali Raheli, Hadi Afshari, Hamid Reza Hamedi

This paper deals with optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) behaviors for a triple semiconductor quantum well (SQW) structure driven coherently with two control fields, confined in a unidirectional ring cavity. The effect of different system parameters on OB and OM is explored. It is found that the threshold of onset of the OB can be controlled by manipulating the Rabi frequency of control fields. In this case, OB can be converted to OM. Then we investigate the effect of probe and control field detunings on OB behaviors. We found that the frequency detuning of probe field affects only the upper–lower branches of the OB curves but has no specific impact on OB threshold. By manipulating the first control field detuning, neither the OB threshold intensity nor upper–lower branches change. Finally, it is found that increasing the second control field detuning can reduce merely the OB threshold intensity, while no change happens in upper–lower OB branches. The results may be applicable in real experiments for realizing an all-optical switching or coding element in a solid-state platform.

Controlling optical bistability, multistability and all-optical switching through multi-photon excitation process

Abstract We present a theoretical study on optical bistability (OB), optical multistability (OM) and tunable all-optical switching in a four-level cascade type atomic system. The density matrix formalism is used to find out the response of the probe laser field. We explore OB and OM under unidirectional optical ring cavity configuration. A comparison between the effects of electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption windows on OB is presented. The threshold of OB and the hysteresis width can be tuned effectively by adjusting the applied coherent fields. A transition from OB to OM and vice-versa can be easily achieved by tuning the field parameters and the atomic cooperation parameter. Dynamic control of the probe laser propagating through the medium has been investigated. We also demonstrate conversion of a continuous wave input probe field into output switched pulse. The ON/OFF time of the switched probe pulse can also be controlled by tuning the field parameters.

Optical bistability and multistability via both coherent and incoherent fields in a three-level system

Haifeng Xu

Abstract We have investigated the optical bistability and multistability behaviors in a three-level V-type system via both coherent and incoherent fields inside a unidirectional ring cavity. We find that the appearance and disappearance of optical bistability (OB)/optical multistability (OM) can easily be controlled by adjusting systemic parameters. Our scheme opens up a new possibility for realizing transition from OB to OM or vice versa for potential applications in information networks and processing with increased capacity.

Magnetically dependent optical bistability and multistability in open diamond nitrogen-vacancy centers

R. Karimi, Mojde Eghbalpour, Seyyed Hossein Asadpour +2 more

We have investigated the optical bistability and optical multistability behaviors in a unidirectional ring cavity filled with diamond nitrogen-vacancy (defect centers driven by an elliptically polarized probe field in the presence of magnetic field and compare its properties with the corresponding closed system. Our numerical result demonstrates that threshold of optical bistability and the width of hysteresis loop can be manipulated by adjusting the phase difference between the two circularly polarized components of a single coherent field and cavity parameters, i.e., the electronic exit rate from cavity and electron injection rates. It is also shown that optical bistability and optical multistability are very sensitive to the relative phase between applied fields and magnetic field. It can be realized that by tuning the parameters the transition from bistability to multistability or vice versa can be obtained.

Optical bistability and multistability via atomic coherence in the quasi-Λ-type atomic system

Chen Ai

The steady-state optical bistability(OB) and optical multistability(OM) behavior in the quasi——type atomic system driven by a probe field and a coherent coupling field inside a unidirectional ring cavity are shown, and the effects of coupling-field detuning and coupling-field intensity on the OB and OM behavior are investigated. The transition from OB to OM or vice versa is found by varying the detuning of the coherent coupling field or by adjusting the intensity of the coupling field. The influence of the atomic cooperation parameter on the OM behavior is also discussed.
