Abstract

A new liquid crystal hybrid bistable optical device (BOD) is introduced. The optical bistability of two modes of operation of this LC BOD have been observed. The use of LC BODs for optical logic elements and ultralinear modulation applications is described. The transient response of LC BODs has been studied and a "critical slowing down" phenomenon has been observed. The switch time has been measured. The experimental results are in agreement with Garmire's theory.

Optical bistability using nematic liquid crystals and polymer-dispersed liquid crystals

We present the experimental results concerning hybrid optical bistable devices without resonant cavity using as electro-optic modulators a nematic liquid crystal cell and a polymer dispersed liquid crystal film. Bistable operation was studied for different control voltages and multistable behavior was studied for the polymer dispersed liquid crystal film as a function of the control voltage frequency.

Transient response of hybrid bistable optical devices

The response of a hybrid bistable optical device to step inputs of light was studied experimentally. The results confirm theoretical predictions concerning the dependence of switching time on the applied light increment. For the first time the phenomenon of ’’critical slowing down’’ is observed directly.

BISTABLE CHARACTERISTICS OF HYBRID NONLINEAR FABRY-PEROT OPTICAL BISTABILITY

Yonggui Li, Hongjun Zhang, Junhui Yang +2 more

In this paper, we describe a hybrid nonlinear P-P Bistable Optical Device (BOD), the length of its cavity is controllable. The dynamic equations of the system and the equilibrium splution which shows the optical bistable nature are given. The bis-tability and linear modulation characteristics are discussed. The stability of the equilibrium state and the "critical slowing down" effect of transient behavior are analysed. The experimental demonstrations are in agreement with the theoretical evaluations.

Ultralinear bistable electro-optic polarization modulator

Albert Feldman

An optical device utilizing optical feedback has been constructed with a Pockels cell and polarizing components. Two modes of operation of the device are demonstrated. Both modes exhibit optical bistability. It is demonstrated that in one mode of operation the nonlinear dependence of the output intensity as a function of an input optical or electrical signal can be made arbitrarily small compared to the linear dependence.

Hybrid optical bistability in ferroelectric liquid crystal and its dynamic characteristics

Akira Tagawa, Hiroshi Moritake, Masanori Ozaki +1 more

Abstract In the area of optical logic and optical information processing, such nonlinear optical devices as optical Instability, optical amplifier, and optical limiter are important basic elements. In this paper, the hybrid optical bistability and optical limiter characteristics are realized by means of an electrical linear feedback to a ferroelectric liquid crystal cell (SSFLC cell). If the feedback gain is positive, the optical bistability is obtained while the optical limiter characteristics are obtained if the gain is negative. Also, it was demonstrated that by instantaneously increasing or cutting the incident optical intensity in a pulsed state in the optical bistability region, the transmission light intensity can be switched from the low‐transmission state to the high‐transmission state or from the high‐ to low‐transmission state. The minimum pulsewidth needed for switching is 70 μs for the low‐transmission state to the high‐transmission state and 50 μs for the high‐transmission state to the low‐transmission state. Since the speed is very fast, the high‐speed response of the ferroelectric liquid crystal is used effectively.
