Abstract

We present the experimental results concerning hybrid optical bistable devices without resonant cavity using as electro-optic modulators a nematic liquid crystal cell and a polymer dispersed liquid crystal film. Bistable operation was studied for different control voltages and multistable behavior was studied for the polymer dispersed liquid crystal film as a function of the control voltage frequency.

Electric-controlled intrinsic optical bistability in nematic liquid crystals

Jiin-Chuan Wu, Shu-Hsia Chen Shu-Hsia Chen

The properties of intrinsic optical bistability in nematic liquid crystals were studied. This kind of optical bistability is without resonant optical cavity and electric feedback. We find that the nematic ROTN-200 film can exhibit bistability when applying a constant ac electric field (≊560 kHz) that is greater than a tricritical voltage VTc=2.614 V. The bistable interval is measured and the hysteresis loop is characterized at each different voltage. The splay and bent elastic constants k11 and k33 are obtained to calculate the numerical result. It is found that the experimental results are in good agreement with theory. The experimental setup with which we can easily observe the bistable phenomena is illustrated. Under the consideration of the finite size of the laser beam, the thermal effect and finite beam size effect are discussed. In addition, some new interesting phenomena about the diffraction ring structure of nematic liquid crystal are reported.

A BISTABLE LIQUID CRYSTAL ELECTRO-OPTIC MODULATOR

Hongjun Zhang, DAI JIAN-HUA, Junhui Yang +2 more

A new liquid crystal hybrid bistable optical device (BOD) is introduced. The optical bistability of two modes of operation of this LC BOD have been observed. The use of LC BODs for optical logic elements and ultralinear modulation applications is described. The transient response of LC BODs has been studied and a "critical slowing down" phenomenon has been observed. The switch time has been measured. The experimental results are in agreement with Garmire's theory.

Mirrorless all-optical bistability in polymer dispersed liquid crystals

We report the observation of a bistable behavior from dye-doped polymer dispersed liquid crystals. The interpretation of the phenomenon is given in the theoretical framework of an absorption which increases with the excitation of the material.

Instabilities in hybrid liquid crystal optical bistable devices

In this paper we report some of the experimental results that can be obtained in the field of hybrid optical bistable devices when liquid crystals are employed as non linear materials. The advantages with respect to other materials are the very low voltages and power needed, compatibles with I.C.'s levels.

Hybrid Optical Bistability Using Antiferroelectric Behavior in Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal

Hiroshi Moritake, Akira Tagawa, Masanori Ozaki +1 more

Hybrid optical bistability with an electrical feedback in surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal which shows antiferroelectric behavior has been studied. The ac operation of the feedback without dc bias voltage is also realized in the liquid crystal which shows a symmetrical transmission-voltage curve. Dynamic characteristics of the switching between optical bistable states by an incident light pulse have also been studied.
