BISTABLE CHARACTERISTICS OF HYBRID NONLINEAR FABRY-PEROT OPTICAL BISTABILITY

Abstract

In this paper, we describe a hybrid nonlinear P-P Bistable Optical Device (BOD), the length of its cavity is controllable. The dynamic equations of the system and the equilibrium splution which shows the optical bistable nature are given. The bis-tability and linear modulation characteristics are discussed. The stability of the equilibrium state and the "critical slowing down" effect of transient behavior are analysed. The experimental demonstrations are in agreement with the theoretical evaluations.

AN ANALYSIS ON CHARACTERISTIC OF THE HYBRID OPTICAL BISTABILITY

Yonggui Li, Hongjun Zhang, 中国科学院物理研究所

The characteristic of optical bistability is analysed theoretically for the photoelectric modulator with a feedback circuit. The effect of the "critical slowing down" for a step input as it operates in the bistable mode is discussed.

OPTICAL SWITCHING AND BIST ABILITY IN A FABRY-PEROT INTERFEROMETER CONTAINING PLASMA

Zhong Quande, 中国科学院物理研究所

In this paper, the optical switching and bistability of a Fabry-Perot interferometer filled with plasma are studied theoretically. In the plane-wave approximation a equilibrium state equation which shows nonlinear transmission-intensity characteristic is derived. The critical detuning and the general formulae of "on " and "off" intensities for bistable operation are presented. A numerical example is given.

A BISTABLE LIQUID CRYSTAL ELECTRO-OPTIC MODULATOR

Hongjun Zhang, DAI JIAN-HUA, Junhui Yang +2 more

A new liquid crystal hybrid bistable optical device (BOD) is introduced. The optical bistability of two modes of operation of this LC BOD have been observed. The use of LC BODs for optical logic elements and ultralinear modulation applications is described. The transient response of LC BODs has been studied and a "critical slowing down" phenomenon has been observed. The switch time has been measured. The experimental results are in agreement with Garmire's theory.

Optical bistability in an all-optical fiber nonlinear fabry-perot resonator with linear absorption

Shenping Li, K.T. Chan

An all-optical fiber nonlinear Fabry-Perot resonator is proposed. The steady-state model for describing this resonator is developed. The transmission and refection bistabilities are shown numerically. Our results show that the bistability in this system is similar to that in a normal nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon, except that the characteristics of the bistability can be changed not only by the cavity length but also by the phase shifts of the fiber loop mirrors.

Measurement of the nonlinear refractive index in a bistable laser diode

Riccardo Calvani, Renato Caponi

The optical bistability (OB) behavior of a semiconductor Fabry-Perot (F.P.) cavity, biased around threshold, has been employed to evaluate the optical device parameters.1 In the present work, this approach was experimentally applied to measurements of the nonlinear refractive-index coefficient n2 in OB operating conditions.

Transient response of hybrid bistable optical devices

E. Garmire, John H. Marburger, Susan Davis Allen +1 more

The response of a hybrid bistable optical device to step inputs of light was studied experimentally. The results confirm theoretical predictions concerning the dependence of switching time on the applied light increment. For the first time the phenomenon of ’’critical slowing down’’ is observed directly.
