Shapiro Steps Induced by Resonance Irradiation

Abstract

We consider a Josephson junction coupled to a high-quality parallel resonance circuit under microwave irradiation on the resonance frequency. The phase locking of Josephson oscillations, manifesting itself through Shapiro steps, is studied using an analytical theory developed for the circuit. Substantial change in the amplitude of the oscillating component of the Josephson phase within the phase-locking range determines specificity of the step behavior. This analysis is compared with the results of a numerical simulation.

Resonances and Phase Locking in Josephson High-Q Circuit

Victor K. Kornev, Nikolay V. Kolotinskiy

We consider Josephson junction coupled to a high-quality tank circuit and present both analytic analyses and numerical simulation results for resonances of both force and parametric types as well as Shapiro steps under microwave irradiation with frequency close to the resonance one. Physical mechanisms of the phenomena are studied and discussed.

Variation of Longitudinal Plasma Wavelength under Irradiation and Double Resonance in Coupled Josephson Junctions

Yu. M. Shukrinov, I. R. Rahmonov, Mahmoud Gaafar

The effect of electromagnetic wave irradiation on the phase dynamics of intrinsic Josephson junctions in high temperature superconductors is investigated. We predict three novel effects by variation of the radiation amplitude and frequency: changing of the longitudinal plasma wavelength at parametric resonance; double resonance of the Josephson oscillations with radiation and longitudinal plasma wave; charging of superconducting layers in the current interval corresponding to the Shapiro step. The "bump" structure in IVC recently observed experimentally is demonstrated. We also observe ragged Shapiro steps at double resonance.

Effects of LC shunting on the Shapiro steps features of Josephson junction

Yu. M. Shukrinov, I. R. Rahmonov, K. V. Kulikov +1 more

We study an effect of external radiation on the dynamics of Josephson junction shunted by an LC circuit. When the Josephson frequency is equal to the frequency of the circuit, additional stable resonant circuit branches appear in the IV -characteristic of the junction. The branches occur on the stable side of a narrow resonance peak, while the other peak side has a negative slope and is unstable. We show that the amplitude dependence of the Shapiro step width crucially changes when the Shapiro step is on the resonant circuit branch. These effects might give very important advantages for methods and technologies that exploit the response of Josephson junctions to microwave fields.

Classical analysis of phase-locking transients and Rabi-type oscillations in microwave-driven Josephson junctions

Jeffrey E. Marchese, Matteo Cirillo, Niels Grønbech‐Jensen

We present a classical analysis of the transient response of Josephson junctions perturbed by microwaves and thermal fluctuations. The results include a specific low-frequency modulation in phase and amplitude behavior of a junction in its zero-voltage state. This transient modulation frequency is linked directly to an observed variation in the probability for the system to switch to its nonzero voltage state. Complementing previous work on linking classical analysis to the experimental observations of Rabi oscillations, this expanded perturbation method also provides closed-form analytical results for attenuation of the modulations and the Rabi-type oscillation frequency. Results of perturbation analysis are compared directly (and quantitatively) to numerical simulations of the classical model as well as published experimental data, suggesting that transients to phase-locking are closely related to the observed oscillations.

Dynamics of underdamped Josephson junctions with nonsinusoidal current-phase relation

Victor K. Kornev, T. Yu. Karminskaya, Yu. V. Kislinskiĭ +3 more

Results on analytical and computational investigations of high frequency dynamics of Josephson junctions, characterized by nonzero capacitance and the second harmonic in the current-phase relation are presented. These attributes each influence on behaviour of integer Shapiro steps and lead to formation of non-integer Shapiro steps. Analytic theory of the integer and non-integer Shapiro steps has been developed for so-called high frequency limit. The analytical and numerical results are compared with experimental data for hybrid heterostructures YBCO/Au/Nb. Detector response for the case of high fluctuation level has been considered as well.

Shapiro Step on the rc-Branch in the IV-characteristic of a Josephson Junction with an LC-shunting

Yu. M. Shukrinov, I. R. Rahmonov, K. V. Kulikov +1 more

The effect of external radiation on the phase dynamics of Josephson junctions shunted by an LC circuit is examined. It is shown that additional resonant circuit (rc) branches appear in the current voltage characteristics of the junctions when the Josephson frequency is equal to the frequency of the formed resonance circuit. We show that the amplitude dependence of the Shapiro step width crucially changes when the Shapiro step is on the rc-branch in comparison to the case of Josephson junction without shunt. The experimental implementation of these effects might give very important advantages for existing methods and technologies.
