Abstract

In the paper, the effect of Zeeman inter combination of atomic energy levels is studied. It is indicated that the effect is different from the Zeeman effect in general textbook.

Quantum-theory Treatment of Zeeman Effect

Lei Guang-peng

This paper takes the viewpoint of Quantum Mechanics to explain the splitting of energy level and spectral line.On the basis of the result of Zeeman Effect experimental and from the angle of electron spin,it presents the rightness by using L(L+1),S(S+1),J(J+1)to replace L2 、S2 、J2 respectively in Lande g-factor,and compares with the normal and abnormal Zeeman effect according to Lande g-factor value to reveal their differences and relations.

On the quantum theory of the simple Zeeman effect

A. M. Mosharrafa

Abstract The aim of this paper is to put forward a theory of the simple Zeeman effect which possesses the same general features as those of the corresponding theory in the case of the Stark effect already developed by Epstein and Schwarzschild. These general features may be briefly described as follows:— (1) The steady states of the atom are governed by classical dynamics subject to certain conditions, the quantum restrictions, which define the atom both in the absence and the 'presence of the field; (2) radiation occurs during the period of transition from one steady state to another according to Bohr’s energy relation hv = Wm-Wn.

Engineering extended Hubbard models with Zeeman excitations of ultracold Dy atoms

Rodrigo A. Vargas–Hernández, Roman V. Krems

Abstract We show that Zeeman excitations of ultracold Dy atoms trapped in an optical lattice can be used to engineer extended Hubbard models with tunable inter-site and particle number-non-conserving interactions. We show that the ratio of the hopping amplitude and inter-site interactions in these lattice models can be tuned in a wide range by transferring the atoms to different Zeeman states. We propose to use the resulting controllable models for the study of the effects of direct particle interactions and particle number-non-conserving terms on Anderson localization.

Experimental Study of Zeeman Light Shifts in Weak Magnetic Fields

Claude N. Cohen-Tannoudji, J. Dupont-Roc

According to the quantum theory of the optical-pumping cycle, one can describe the effect of a nonresonant light beam on the different Zeeman sublevels of an atomic ground state by an effective Hamiltonian ${\mathcal{H}}_{e}$ which depends on the polarization and spectral profile of the incident light. In order to check the structure of ${\mathcal{H}}_{e}$, we have performed a detailed experimental study of the ground-state energy sublevels of various kinds of atoms perturbed by different types of nonresonant light beams. Attention is paid to the modification of the Zeeman structure due to ${\mathcal{H}}_{e}$. We have been able to obtain experimentally in the ground state of $^{199}\mathrm{Hg}$, $^{201}\mathrm{Hg}$, and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$, Zeeman light shifts that are larger than the width of the levels due to the thermal relaxation. The removal of the Zeeman degeneracy in zero external field, due to a nonresonant light irradiation, is observed by different optical-pumping techniques; the full Zeeman diagram of the perturbed atoms is also determined when a static field ${\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{H}}}_{0}$ is added. We have checked that the effect of ${\mathcal{H}}_{e}$ can be described in terms of fictitious static electric or magnetic fields. These fictitious fields can be used to act selectively on a given atomic level.

We have been able to obtain experimentally in the ground state of 199Hg^{199}\mathrm{Hg}199Hg, 201Hg^{201}\mathrm{Hg}201Hg, and 87Rb^{87}\mathrm{Rb}87Rb, Zeeman light shifts that are larger than the width of the levels due to the thermal relaxation.
