Abstract

The stimulated collision-induced fluorescence (SOF) at wavelengths of 472.6nm, 582.6nm and 648.3nm, as well as Raman-shifted radiation at wavelength of 475nm were observed in barium vapor pumped by broadband pulse of the XeOl laser. The SCF was found to be self-termination short pulses with FWHM of 8 ns, and its internsity inoreased with buffer-gas pressure. There existed time delay aa long as 20 ns between the front edges of the pump pulse and of the Raman-shifted pulse, and the Raman conversion efficiency decreased significantly as the buffer-gas pressure increasing.

Stimulated Collision-induced Fluorescence in XeCl-laser-pumped Barium Vapour at High Buffer-gas Pressures

Yunsheng Huo

New stimulated collision-induced fluorescence lines at 551·9, 606·3 and 611·1 nm were observed in XeCl-laser-pumped barium vapour at high buffer-gas pressures. They correspond to barium 6s6d 3D2-6s6p 3P1 and 5d6p 3P2, 1-6s5d 3D3, 2 transitions, following a preceding spin-forbidden transition 6s7p 1P1-6s6d 3D2. A similarity was found to exist between this 6s7p 1P1-6s6d 3D2 transition and the well studied 6s6p 1P1-6s5d 3D2 transition.

Stimulated collision-induced fluorescence of barium triplex-states

Yuanshun Huo

The stimulated collision-induced fluorescence (SCF) at wavelengths of 551.9, 606.3, and 611.1 nm was observed from XeCl-laser pumped barium vapor for the first time. They correspond to the following transitions of barium atoms respectively: 6s6d3D2-6s6p3P1, 5d6p2-6s5d3D3, and 5d6p2P1-6s5d3D2. The possibility of exis-tance of the barium spin-forbidden transition 6s7d1dD-6s6p3P2 was proposed and discussed.

Efficient frequency conversion of ultrashort pulses from the visible (0.55 μ) to the infrared (1.5 μ) in barium vapor

S O Sapondzhyan, David G. Sarkisyan

The frequency of ?p?0.55 ? radiation of ultrashort duration was converted to the infrared (? =1.5 ?) in Ba vapor in the presence of an Ar buffer gas whose pressure was varied between 1 and 300 Torr. The conversion quantum efficiency was 30%. An investigation was made of the mechanisms for population of the 1P10 Ba level. It was found that when the detuning of the pump radiation from the appropriate transition was large, the only mechanism for population of the 1P10 level (followed by lasing at ? =1.5 ?) was optical collisions: Ba(1S0)+Ar+h?p?Ba(1P10)+Ar. For small detunings and low Ar pressures other mechanisms for population of the 1P10 level were also found. Measurements were made of the temporal characteristics of the ? =1.5 ? radiation. Possible reasons for the absence of electronic stimulated Raman scattering are discussed.

Time-resolved fluorescence and population measurements in laser-pumped barium vapour

J. LEONARD BOWEN, Anne P. Thorne

Time-resolved measurements of fluorescence and level populations have been made on barium vapour illuminated by an intense pulse of laser radiation (1 MW cm -2 , 50 ns FWHM) tuned to the resonance transition of Ba I, 6s 2 1 S 0 -6s6p 1 P 1 , at 5535 AA. Barium number densities between 10 13 -10 15 cm -3 were investigated, using a buffer gas of helium at 100 Torr. Fluorescence was measured with two different geometrical arrangements, one allowing partial spatial resolution. In neither case did the observed fluorescence saturate with increasing laser power, although the maximum flux was more than sufficient to burn through the vapour column, as confirmed by transmission measurements. The power loss from the laser beam was found to be compatible with the scattered radiation from the pumped column in the absence of radiation trapping. In contrast to other similar experiments, no significant ionisation was detected (<5%). Time-resolved population measurements by anomalous dispersion on the 6s6p 3 P 2 and 6s5d 1 D 2 metastable levels yielded quenching cross sections for both Ba-Ba and Ba-He collisions, but gave anomalous result for the peak populations. A qualitative explanation of the fluorescence anomaly is proposed on the basis of the AC Stark effect, and it is shown that the same effect can inhibit the onset of stimulated emission to the metastable D levels.

Improved short-pulse pumping of stimulated Raman scattering in lead vapor

Larry R. Marshall, James A. Piper

Improved efficiency for short pulse stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in Pb vapor is obtained using accumulation of gain between a closely spaced pulse pair. The peak power conversion efficiency of the delayed pulse is increased to 40%, in contrast to 15% for a single pulse. Numerical modeling gives good agreement with observation, and suggests that this enhancement is caused by the continued presence of coherent excitation produced by the first pulse. The dependence of the enhancement in delayed-pulse efficiency on Xe buffer gas pressure in the Pb-vapor cell is attributed to changes in the transient response time T/sub 2/ of the Pb medium with Xe pressure.>
