Abstract

The paper report an experimental observation of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the D 2 line of 85 Rb atoms. When a coupling laser for 5S 1/2 ,F=3→5P 3/2 ,F′ is Raman resonant to the probe laser in 5S 1/2 ,F=2→5P 3/2 ,F′ , EIT peaks apparently appear. Under certain conditions, absorption enhancement due to the electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) was also recorded together with the EIT. A lambda coupling scheme with two strong lasers (a coupling laser and a pumping laser) was realized, the spectrum of the probe laser exhibits more complex structure, revealing rich quantum coherence interactions.

Nonlinear resonances caused by coherent, optical pumping and saturating effects in the presence of three laser fields for the85Rb-D2line

Md. Mabud Hossain, S. Mitra, P Poddar +3 more

Atomic coherence resonances such as electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) signals are observed in a Doppler broadened multi-level system for the D 2 line of 85 Rb atoms in a vapour cell considering different types of atom–laser coupling schemes. Besides the coherence resonances, the nonlinear resonances like velocity selective optical pumping (VSOP) dips and velocity selective resonances (VSR) are also observed for the non-zero velocity selective groups of atoms. In the presence of pump, control and probe laser fields, we observe two EIT signals in a double Λ-type system and two EIA signals in a double V -type system. We are able to see the EIA signal for the non-zero velocity group of atoms when the pump laser is locked with an open transition by a small red detuning. We also report the experimental observation of simultaneous EIT and EIA signals in a (Λ+ V )-type system. The effect of frequency tuning of the control laser is also studied in the presence of the frequency locked pump laser. A simple theoretical analysis explains the experimental results.

Two-Photon Atomic Coherence Effect of Transition 5 S 1/2 −5 P 3/2 −4 D 5/2 (4 D 3/2 ) of 85 Rb atoms

Dong-Sheng Ding, Zhi‐Yuan Zhou, Bao‐Sen Shi +2 more

We experimentally observe the counterintuitive absorption peaks in the transition spectra of 5S 1/2 −5P 3/2 −4D 5/2 and 5S 1/2 −5P 3/2 −4D 3/2 in a hot 85 Rb vapor. These spectra are very different from the spectra observed via double resonance optical pumping or electromagnetically induced transparency in the same transitions. These absorption peaks are from electromagnetically induced absorption due to the two-photon atomic coherence effect. We also investigate the relations between these peaks and the powers of the coupling laser and the probe laser experimentally.

Sub-Doppler absorption narrowing in atomic vapor at two intense laser fields

Aleksandar J. Krmpot, Marina M. Mijailovi, Bratimir M. Pani? +4 more

We have experimentally studied electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and absorption (EIA) in hot 85Rb atomic vapor using probe and coupling light with comparable power levels. We have shown that strong-probe EIT has different linewidth and appears in fewer configurations than does usual, weak probe EIT. In V-scheme, where optical pumping and saturation are dominant mechanisms, narrow EIT is possible only when a probe is tuned to a closed transition. The width of the EIT resonance increases with laser intensity with non-linear dependence, similar to the weak-probe EIT in Lambda- scheme. The EIT in Lambda- scheme was observed when two transitions had balanced population losses. The EIA was modified for the case of a strong probe as well: in four-level N-scheme with Zeeman sublevels the EIA was observed only for a cycling transition when F'=F+1, where F and F' are the angular momenta of the 5 2S1/2 (ground) and 5 2P3/2 (excited) state hyper-fine levels, respectively. The combination of strong probe and strong coupling laser beam intensities allows observation of an absorption dip due to three-photon resonance in a four-level scheme that involves the Raman transitions via virtual level.

Splitting of electromagnetically induced transparency under strong-probe conditions due to Doppler averaging

Kanhaiya Pandey, Vasant Natarajan A

We study the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in room-temperature Rb vapour under conditions of a strong probe laser. The atoms form a ladder system with the lower transition coupled by the probe laser and the upper transition coupled by the control laser. Density-matrix analysis of the system shows that, for zero-velocity atoms, the strong probe beam causes a reduction in absorption and broadening of the profile. But the lineshape after thermal averaging shows a splitting of the EIT resonance and enhanced absorption near line centre. The experimental observations in $^{85}Rb$ agree qualitatively with the predicted lineshapes.

Resonant two-photon absorption and electromagnetically induced transparency in open ladder-type atomic system

Han Seb Moon, Heung‐Ryoul Noh

We have experimentally and theoretically studied resonant two-photon absorption (TPA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the open ladder-type atomic system of the 5S(1/2) (F = 1)-5P(3/2) (F' = 0, 1, 2)-5D(5/2) (F″ = 1, 2, 3) transitions in (87)Rb atoms. As the coupling laser intensity was increased, the resonant TPA was transformed to EIT for the 5S(1/2) (F = 1)-5P(3/2) (F' = 2)-5D(5/2) (F″ = 3) transition. The transformation of resonant TPA into EIT was numerically calculated for various coupling laser intensities, considering all the degenerate magnetic sublevels of the 5S(1/2)-5P(3/2)-5D(5/2) transition. From the numerical results, the crossover from TPA to EIT could be understood by the decomposition of the spectrum into an EIT component owing to the pure two-photon coherence and a TPA component caused by the mixed term.
