Abstract

An accurate measurement method for Rb vapor′s abosrptivity and absorptive peak to 780 nm laser with narrow linewidth under high-pressure buffer gas is proposed.Based on the principle of differential absorption,a single laser diode(LD) with central wavelength of 787 nm is used as a reference beam source to eliminate the error of absorptivity brought by the Rb vapor cell′s uncoated inner-surfaces.The absorptive peak is measured through the dip of the spectra observed after 780 nm laser transmitted through the Rb vapor cell.Higher accuracy of this method is verified by the measurement of the absorptivity and absorptive peak for the Rb vapor with buffer gases of 252.5 kPa He and 50.5 kPa methane.

A precise measurement method of each component gas pressures in rubidium vapor cell based on atom absorption spectra

Wei Feng, Guangzong Xiao, Xiaohu Liu +2 more

A new method and its principle are presented for measuring the each component gas pressures in Rubidium (Rb) by the analysis of absorption spectral profile. The experiment system is set up to obtain Rb absorption spectra. And then each component gas pressures in atom vapor cell is estimated. First, the relationships between transmittance of probe light, atom density and absorption cross section are introduced, and the factors which influence the absorption spectral profile and methods to measure gas pressures are given. Second, the frequency-dependence curves of transmittance and the absorption spectra are obtained through tuning the laser frequency through the Rb D1 transition. Finally, the gas pressures of Rb, N2 and He are achieved, through fitting absorption spectral profile referring to half-width and minimum transmittance value of absorption spectra. The experiment results show that gas pressures in Rb atom vapor cell can be accurately measured by absorption spectrometric methods, which will be helpful for the following study of atom vapor cell. The gas pressures of N2 and He measured by the experiments are well matched with design values. The Rb gas pressure is 30%~50% less than the saturated vapor pressure and the suppression may be due to the adsorption of the cell surfaces coated with octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) film.

Laser spectroscopy with nanometric cells containing atomic vapor of metal: influence of buffer gas

David G. Sarkisyan, G. Hakhumyan, Armen D. Sargsyan +3 more

Comparison of absorption and fluorescence in a nano-cell containing Rb vapor with other Rb nano-cells with addition of neon gas is presented. It is shown that the effect of collapse and revival of Dicke-type narrowing occurs for Rb nanocells containing N2 as buffer gas under 6 and 20 Torr pressure for the thickness L = λ /2 and L = where λ is the resonant λ, laser wavelength 794 nm (D1 line). Particularly for 6 Torr the line-width of the transmission spectrum for the thickness L =λ/2 is 2 times narrower than that for L = λ. For an ordinary Rb cell with L = 0.1 - 10 cm with addition of buffer gas, the velocity selective optical pumping/saturation (VSOP) resonances in saturated absorption spectra are fully suppressed when the buffer gas pressure > 0.5 Torr. A spectacular difference is that for L = λ, VSOP resonances located at the atomic transitions are still observable even when Ne pressure is ≥ 6 Torr. Narrowband fluorescence spectra of a nano-cell with L = λ/2 can be used as a convenient tool for online buffer gas pressure monitoring for the conditions when ordinary pressure gauges are unusable. Comparison of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect in a nano-cell filled with pure (without a buffer gas) Rb with another nano-cell, where buffer gas nitrogen is added, is presented. The use of N2 gas inside Rb nano-cells strongly extends the range of coupling laser detunings in which it is still possible to form EIT resonance.

Essential features of optical processes in neon-buffered submicron-thin Rb vapor cell

G. Hakhumyan, Armen D. Sargsyan, Claude Leroy +3 more

A new submicron thin cell (STC) filled with Rb and neon gas is developed and comparison of resonant absorption with STC containing pure Rb is provided. The effect of collapse and revival of Dicke-type narrowing is still observable for the thickness L = lambda /2 and L = lambda , where lambda is a resonant laser wavelength 794 nm (D(1) line). For an ordinary Rb cm-size cell with addition of buffer gas, the velocity selective optical pumping/saturation (VSOP) resonances in saturated absorption spectra are fully suppressed if neon pressure > 0.5 Torr. A spectacular difference is that for L = lambda , VSOP resonances are still observable even when neon pressure is > or = 6 Torr. Narrow fluorescence spectra at L = lambda /2 allow one to realize online buffer gas pressure monitoring. A good agreement with theoretical model is observed.

Sub-Doppler features of optical processes in the Rb extremely thin cell filled with an additional buffer gas.

David G. Sarkisyan, G. Hakhumyan, Armen D. Sargsyan +2 more

Comparison of the resonant absorption and fluorescence in the extremely thin cell (ETC) filled with pure Rb with another one filled with Rb and Neon gas with the pressures 6 Torr and 20 Torr is provided. The effect of the collapse and revival of Dicke-type narrowing is still observable for the thickness L=λ/2, and L=λ, where λ is a resonant laser wavelength 794 nm (D1 line of the Rb), i.e. the spectra of the resonant absorption and fluorescence demonstrate the sub-Doppler narrowing for the thickness L=λ/2 and broadening for the thickness L=λ. It is important to note, that in an ordinary Rb cell with the thickness L in the range of 1mm- 10 cm filled with buffer gas, with a pressure higher than 1 Torr in the Saturation Absorption scheme, any sub-Doppler features are absent. For L= λ the so called velocity selective optical pumping (VSOP) resonance located at the atomic transition is still observable when Ne pressure is 6 Torr , while the linewidth is increased by 4 times in comparison with that obtained in the pure Rb ETC. This VSOP resonance is wash out when Ne pressure is 20 Torr. It is demonstrated that use of the fluorescence spectra at L=λ/2 allows one to use the ETC for the buffer gas pressure measurement. Comparison with the theory is presented.

Laser 728 nm Spectroscopy of Electrodeless Discharge Rb Lamp

Zhongzheng Liu, Xiaobo Xue, Fuzeng Niu +3 more

We mainly report the 728.0 nm transition between 7S 1/2 and 5P 1/2 laser spectroscopy of an electrodeless discharge Rb vapor lamp, which is the clock transition of a potential four-level active optical clock, once laser cooled and trapped Rb atoms are pumped by 359.2 nm laser. To realize this proposition, we study the linewidth and absorption characteristics of the 728.0 nm laser absorption spectrum of a rubidium electrodeless discharge vapor lamp with varying lamp temperature and rf driving power respectively, measured by an external cavity diode laser in a Littrow configuration. The measured 728.0 nm spectrum of a glass cell filled with Rb and Ar buffer gases in the electrodeless discharge Rb lamp based Faraday filter stabilized laser can be a heterodyne comparison reference for the weak power output of a possible cold Rb four-level active optical clock at 728.0 nm clock transition with laser cooled and trapped atoms. To the best of our knowledge, there has not been any research reported on Rb 728.0 nm laser spectroscopy in detail.

Investigation of coherent population trapping signals in 87Rb cells with buffer gas

M I Fedorov, Ермак Сергей Викторович, Mikhail V. Petrenko +2 more

Characteristics of CPT (coherent population trapping) signal are investigated in small-size glass vapor cells containing 87 Rb and Ne buffer gas with narrow linewidth laser pumping on D 2 line. Parameters of CPT absorption signals are measured using small-size vapor cells with Ne buffer gas pressure in range of 200-400 Torr, cell temperature in range of 65-120 °C and values of laser pumping power of 30-400 μW/cm 2 . Optimum conditions, under which the minimal value of short-term instability of resonance line is achieved, are obtained in experiments. CPT signals using vapor cells based on integrated technologies containing 87 Rb in atmosphere of Ne are also investigated. The CPT signals with typical linewidths of 2-3 kHz and signal-to-noise ratio of 1500 in 1 Hz bandwidth are observed, which allows one to provide relative frequency instability of 10 -11 at 100 s.
