Abstract

Recently, the free space optical communication system based on orbital angular momentum( OAM) states multiplexing has become one of the hot topics in optical communications and quantum optics, because OAM states are new dimensional information carriers. An efficient orbital-angular-momentum-multiplexed free-space optical communication scheme is proposed, where the efficient orbital angular momentum states separation method is adopted. With this OAM separation method, different orbital angular momentum states can be obtained simultaneously from the superposition OAM state beam, which greatly saves time and the expensive devices for demodulating the information from the information-carrying OAM states. Numerical simulation results show that the proposed scheme can reduce time and the number of the devices at the receiver for the information retrieving. The bit error rate of the system can be less than 10- 4when the signal-to-noise ratio of the system is greater than 23 dB. Therefore, this OAMmultiplexed free-space optical communications scheme is proved to be feasible.

The beam with orbital angular momentum is a present domestic and foreign research key direction. Its application and development will bring the profound influence in the optical communications field. At the same time, light's orbital angular momentum promises potential applications in both classical and quantum optical communication. The research progress of the beam with orbital angular momentum and encoding information as light's OAM for free-space optical communication were reviewed in this article, the existing design method, mechanism and description methods of encoding information as light's OAM were discussed. In quantum communication, qudits can be encoded in photons using their OAM for creating high-dimensional entanglement based on entangled photon pairs from SPDC. In this paper, light's OAM is used as information carrier for classical and quantum communication, which is promising to ensures the security of atmospheric laser communication, improves the density and precision of information transmission. It is apparent that an efficient way to measure the orbital angular momentum of individual photons and light beams with good efficiency would be of potentially great importance for optical communications and quantum information. In view of the above, the measurements of orbital angular momentum of individual photons and light beams are analyzed and discussed in detail.

Free-space optical multiplexing scheme based on acousto-optic deflector (AOD) with orbital angular momentum

Zhichuan Liao, Qian Sun, Yu Zhen Hu +1 more

Free-space optical multiplexing is essential for multimode quantum repeater, which plays a central role in quantum information processing and communication. Regarding spatial degrees of freedom, orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes have garnered significant interest due to their capacity for encoding with infinite inherent dimensions. OAM qubits and optical paths multiplexing have been separately implemented in previous work, the achieved number of multiplexed modes implemented is on the order of hundreds. We propose to directly enhance free-space optical propagation mode by combining optical paths multiplexing based on acoustic-optic deflectors (AODs) with OAM modes. The experiment verified that OAM still maintains high efficiency and considerable 0.5 dB bandwidth after AODs modulation. This scheme at least offers one order of magnitude more mode numbers than previous works and is expected to achieve higher mode numbers in quantum memory using more practical methods.

Quantum multiplexing with the orbital angular momentum of light

Juan Carlos García-Escartín, Pedro Chamorro‐Posada

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons offers a suitable support to carry the quantum data of multiple users. We present two optical setups that send the information of $n$ quantum communication parties through the same free-space optical link. Those qubits can be sent simultaneously and share path, wavelength, and polarization without interference, increasing the communication capacity of the system. The first solution, a qubit combiner, merges $n$ channels into the same link, which transmits $n$ independent photons. The second solution, the OAM multiplexer, uses controlled-not ($\mathrm{CNOT}$) gates to transfer the information of $n$ optical channels to a single photon. Additional applications of the multiplexer circuits, such as quantum arithmetic, as well as connections to OAM sorting are discussed.

Shiyao Fu, Yanwang Zhai, Heng Zhou +4 more

Orbital angular momentum (OAM), a new dimension of photons, has potentials in lots of domains as high-dimensional data coding/decoding. Here we experimentally demonstrate a free-space data transmission system based on 8 bits multi-state OAM shift keying, where multiplexed optical vortices containing 8 various OAM states are employed to constitute 8 bits binary symbols. In the transmitter, the data coding of OAM shift keying is realized by switching a series of special-designed holograms. And in the receiver, the decoding is done by a single Dammann vortex grating along with image processing. We experimentally transmit data, including a gray-scale image, in free-space for 10 meters, showing zero bit-error-rate. The demonstrated results indicate a wide prospect for the future high-dimensional large data rate optical security communications.

Single Photon Orbital Angular Momentum Transfer Based on Information Processing Technology

Hongyu Lin, Xiaoqian Wang, Zhihai Yao

Abstract The orbital angular momentum state (OAM) of the photon can be theoretically evaluated from minus infinity to infinity, and the different orbital angular momentum states are orthogonal to each other. Therefore, in recent years, it has attracted wide attention from the academic circle and the industry. The purpose of this paper is to study the characteristics of single photon orbital angular momentum transfer based on information processing technology and to provide Suggestions for its technical optimization. Based on the characteristics of the angular momentum state of photon orbit, this paper studies its application and related problems in information processing and transmission. In this paper, quantum multiuser communication technology is studied, and a multiuser communication scheme based on photon orbital angular momentum state is proposed. The scheme takes advantage of the orthogonality of different orbital angular momentum states of the photon and assumes that the sender and receiver share a pair of entangled orbital angular momentum states. On this basis, the spatial light modulator is used to modulate it to the entangled photon of the sender, so that the sending photon carries all the user’s information at the same time. Finally, the receiver accurately extracts the information of each sender by measuring the coincidence count and according to the specific receiving rules. Numerical simulation and experimental results show that the coincidence rate of different coding schemes is between 0 and 0.66, which proves the feasibility of the scheme.

Orbital Angular Momentum Multiplexing for Free-space Quantum Key Distribution Impaired by Turbulence

Yu Chen, Shenjie Huang, Majid Safari

In this paper, a free-space quantum key distribution (QKD) system based on BB84 protocol is studied assuming that the transmitted quantum bits are multiplexed spatially based on orthogonal orbital angular momentum (OAM) carrying beams. The performance of such a system is estimated in terms of quantum bit error rate, outage capacity, and effective data rate taking into account the impact of error correction and privacy amplification. Based on the simulation of OAM-carrying beam propagating through atmospheric channels impaired by turbulence, the crosstalk among the multiplexed channels are investigated and its effect on the performance of the QKD system is evaluated. The presented results provide insight into the efficient design of such multiplexed QKD systems particularly in terms of the choice of the optimal average photon number per pulse and the multiplexing mode set.
