Abstract

An N-type four level system where two coupling fields interact with two separate optical transitions was constructed in the present paper. By discussing the behaviors of probing field absorption profiles under the effect of different Rabi frequencies of two coupling fields, EIT, Mollow and Autler-Townes doublet can be seen and mutual transformation between them can be obtained. Multiple transition channels in the system were found and the results show that the system can be divided into several subsystems according to the transition channels. Quantum interference between different transition channels can be realized through different dividing methods, so three nonlinear effects with different generating conditions and physical nature can be seen in the system.

Superposition of Mollow profile and electromagnetically induced transparency or absorption

The transparency and absorption of the Λ-type three-level scheme driven by two coupling fields were investigated.Mollow profile was obtained in a two-level scheme where a strong coupling field and a probing field were applied on the same optical transition between excited state and ground state. There was another coupling field which drived excited state to another ground states hyperfine level in this paper. The Λ-type three-level scheme driven by two coupling fields was introduced, and some new quantum coherent phenomena were given. It can be seen that there is superposition of Mollow profile and electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) or electromagnetically induced absorption(EIA).The dependence of the position of EIT or EIA on Rabi frequencies and frequency detunings of two coupling fields is investigated. The results can be explained by dressed-state formalism.

Electromagnetically induced transparency properties in the cascade quasi-Λ-four-level system

Xiaomin Feng

The A-type three-level system coupled by two coherent fields is a basic model to study the electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT).Based on that, the cascade quasi- A-four-level configuration is formed when a radio-frequency(RF)field drives the transition between the excited state and an additional excited state level. The absorption property is studied along with the parameters of the coupling field and the RF driving field by numerically solving the relevant equations of motion of the density matrix. It is shown that under the applying of the coupling field and the RF driving field, both the Autler-Townes doublet and the EIT are observed in the absorptive spectra and it can be explained properly by the theory of dressed state. An important conclusion is that the Autler-Townes doublet originates from the atom system interaction with the strong RF field, while the EIT originates from atom system quantum interference interaction with the coupling field.

[Mollow profile with seven peaks under double coupling fields].

Transparency and absorption overlaping with Mollow profile in a lambda three-level scheme driven by two coupling fields was investigated. There are two degenerate hyperfine levels within ground state. A strong coupling field and a probing field interact with the same optical transition between the excited state level and the first ground state hyperfine level, and an additional weak coupling field interacts with the excited state level and the second ground state hyperfine level, which is named double coupling lambda three-level scheme. It can be seen that when the strong coupling field is off-resonant, there is the superposition of Mollow profile with EIT, EIA and other quantum coherent phenomena, namely, Mollow profile with seven peaks. The dependence of the position of the EIT or EIA on Rabi frequency and frequency detuning of the strong coupling field was investigated. The results can be accounted for by dressed-state formalism.

Study of coherence effects in an inverted Y-type four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Yafang Shi, Lin Liu +6 more

Atomic coherence and interference play an important role in the study of the atom-photon interactions. Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is an extensively studied two-photon coherence phenomenon theoretically as well as experimentally. EIT is mainly observed in three-level atomic systems which causes transparency by quenching absorption of the medium. In this paper, based on the lambda type three-level system including energy level |1>, |2> and |3>, a microwave driving field is introduced between the excited-state energy level |3> and another excited-state energy level |4> to form an inverted Y-type four-level system. We theoretically study the two- and three-photon coherence in this system. The results show that the coupling field makes the probing absorption intensity at the resonant frequency have a very narrow line-width depression, i.e., EIT. The microwave field causes a dynamic Stark splitting of the energy level |3> and induces the Aulter-Townes double peaks. Their frequency interval is exactly equal to the Rabi frequency of the microwave field. The presence of all three fields induces wide window of EIT at the line center owing to the enhanced depression results. The transient evolution is also discussed to understand the optical switching process in the system. Our theoretical study will be helpful to get a deeper insight into the three-photon effects in multilevel systems.

Electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in a closed lambda-shaped four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Lianshui Zhang, Baozhu Yang +1 more

A quasi-lambda four-level system shows both electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In addition to an optical coupling field and a probing field, there is a radio field which interacts with two excited state hyperfine levels of the quasi-lambda four-level system consisting of two excited state hyperfine levels and two ground state hyperfine levels. If a driving field which interacts with two ground state hyperfine levels is introduced, the quasi-lambda four-level system is modified to a closed-lambda four-level system. The behaviors of the driving field and radio field are studied in this paper and it is seen that the occurence of EIA or EIT and the whole probing properties are controlled by the Rabi frequencies of both driving field and radio field.

Tunable absorption spectrum splitting in a pulse-driven three-level system

Jiawei Wang, Anthony Gullo, K. Velmurugan +1 more

Abstract When a two-level system is driven on resonance by a strong incident field, its emission spectrum is characterized by the well-known Mollow triplet. If the absorption from the excited state, in this continuously driven two-level system, to a third, higher energy level, is probed by a weak field, the resulting absorption spectrum features the Autler-Townes doublet with two peaks separated by the Rabi frequency of the strong driving field. It has been shown that when the two-level system is instead driven by a periodic pulse sequence, the emission spectrum obtained has similarities with the Mollow triplet even though the system is only driven during the short application time of the pulses and is allowed to evolve freely between pulses. Here, we evaluate the absorption spectrum of the three-level system in the ladder/cascade configuration when the bottom two levels are driven by a periodic pulse sequence while the transition between the middle and the highest level is probed by a weak field. The absorption spectrum displays similarities with the Autler-Townes doublet with frequency separation between the main peaks defined by the inter-pulse delay. In addition, this spectrum shows little dependence on the pulse carrier frequency. These results demonstrate the capacity to modulate the absorption spectrum of a three-level system with experimentally achievable pulse protocols.
