Abstract

The A-type three-level system coupled by two coherent fields is a basic model to study the electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT).Based on that, the cascade quasi- A-four-level configuration is formed when a radio-frequency(RF)field drives the transition between the excited state and an additional excited state level. The absorption property is studied along with the parameters of the coupling field and the RF driving field by numerically solving the relevant equations of motion of the density matrix. It is shown that under the applying of the coupling field and the RF driving field, both the Autler-Townes doublet and the EIT are observed in the absorptive spectra and it can be explained properly by the theory of dressed state. An important conclusion is that the Autler-Townes doublet originates from the atom system interaction with the strong RF field, while the EIT originates from atom system quantum interference interaction with the coupling field.

Autler-Townes effect in a strongly driven electromagnetically induced transparency resonance

Lijun Yang, Lianshui Zhang, Xiaoli Li +5 more

In this paper we study the nonlinear behavior of an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance subject to a coherent driving field. The EIT is associated with a $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ three-level system where two hyperfine levels within an electronic ground state are coupled to a common excited state level by a coupling field and a probe field. In addition there is an radio-frequency (rf) field driving a hyperfine transition within the ground state. The paper contrasts two different situations. In one case the rf-driven transition shares a common level with the probed transition and in the second case it shares a common level with the coupled transition. In both cases the EIT resonance is split into a doublet and the characteristics of the EIT doublet are determined by the strength and frequency of the rf-driving field. The doublet splitting originates from the rf-field induced dynamic Stark effect and has close analogy with the Autler-Townes effect observed in three-level pump-probe spectroscopy study. The situation changes when the rf field is strong and the two cases are very different. One is analogous to two $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ three-level systems with EIT resonance associated with each. The other corresponds to a doubly driven three-level system with rf-field-induced electromagnetically induced absorption resonance. The two situations are modeled using numerical solutions of the relevant equation of motion of density matrix. In addition a physical account of their behaviors is given in terms of a dressed state picture.

Controlling the electromagnetically induced transparency frequency tuning range by radio-frequency field

Lianshui Zhang, Zhonghong Zhuang, Jian Wang +2 more

The Electromagnetically Induced Transparency (EIT) is associated with a Λ three-level system and the spectral position of EIT window can be changed by varying the frequency of the coupling field, however, at large detuning the EIT will evolve into a dispersion-like feature and transparency property of EIT become less obvious. In this paper, it is shown that we can perform EIT frequency tuning by a radio-frequency (rf) field. In the cascade quasic-Λ four-level system, the absorption profile of probe field is calculated by solving the equations of motion of the density matrix. It is shown that the Autler-Townes doublet originates from the rf-field induced dynamic Stark effect and the spectral position of EIT window is determined by the frequency detuning of the coupling field. When the frequency detuning of the coupling field is half of the rf Rabi frequency, the EIT feature remain its absorptive profile. The frequency tuning rang of EIT is determined by the rf Rabi frequency, and can be explained using a dressed-state analysis. Therefore, frequency tuning range of EIT can be controlled by the rf Rabi frequency.

Electromagnetically induced absorption and electromagnetically induced transparency in an optical-radio two-photon coupling configuration

Lianshui Zhang, Xiaoli Li, Wang Jian +5 more

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) resonance is obtained in a well-studied lambda three level system where an optical coupling field and a probing field interact with two optical transitions. However, both electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and EIT can be obtained in a modified quasi-lambda four level system consisting of an optical-radio two-photon coupling field and a probing field. By solving the density matrix equation of motion, a physical account of EIA and EIT is given in terms of a dressed state picture. It can be seen that the optical coupling field in this quasi-lambda four level system has a crucial effect on the forming of EIA and EIT. An EIA is observed under a resonant optical coupling and it evolves into an EIT when there is a detuning. Furthermore, the width of EIA or EIT increases as the optical coupling Rabi frequency increases.

Electromagnetically induced absorption and transparency in a closed lambda-shaped four-level system

Xiaoli Li, Lianshui Zhang, Baozhu Yang +1 more

A quasi-lambda four-level system shows both electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In addition to an optical coupling field and a probing field, there is a radio field which interacts with two excited state hyperfine levels of the quasi-lambda four-level system consisting of two excited state hyperfine levels and two ground state hyperfine levels. If a driving field which interacts with two ground state hyperfine levels is introduced, the quasi-lambda four-level system is modified to a closed-lambda four-level system. The behaviors of the driving field and radio field are studied in this paper and it is seen that the occurence of EIA or EIT and the whole probing properties are controlled by the Rabi frequencies of both driving field and radio field.

Distinction between double electromagnetically induced transparency and double Autler–Townes splitting in RF-driven four-level ladder 87 Rb atomic vapor

Harish Singh Rawat, Satya Kesh Dubey, Vijay Narain Ojha

Abstract In this paper, the physical origin of interferences has been explored in a four-level cascade rubidium atom by simultaneous interaction with three energies; two optical fields and one radio frequency (RF) field. The atomic system is investigated by a combination of the analytical method introduced by Zhu et al (2010 Phys. Rev. A 81 053836) and resonant pole method introduced by Anisimov (2008 J. Mod. Opt. 55 ). A substantial amount of variation in the probe absorption has been observed in various regimes. The transition from electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) to Autler–Townes spitting (ATS) is observed. It is found that a definite threshold value exists governing the crossover from EIT to ATS. The applied analytical method gives a clear insight into the nature of interferences; one may observe EIT as a consequence of destructive interference, whereas ATS is a consequence of constructive interference. Furthermore, a transition from single EIT to double electromagnetically induced transparency has been detected when the system is illuminated by RF-driving field in weak control regime. Further, transition from ATS to double Autler–Townes splitting has been observed in the strong control regime.

Coherent transient investigation in electromagnetically induced transparency with double windows

Xiaoli Li

A theoretical study of the time-dependent probe response of a single electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) window to double EIT windows is presented by numerically solving the equations of motion of the density matrix in a quasi-A-four-level configuration. There is a coherent transient process with high quantum beats. This effect can be explained using the dressed state formalism. The quantum beats result from quantum coherence effect between the levels driven by RF field. The results show that when the probe field is on resonance with a bare-state transition, the beat frequency is one-half of RF Rabi frequency in transient absorption response. While the probe field is on resonance with a dressed-state transition, which results from the atom system interaction with strong RF field, the beat frequency equals the RF Rabi frequency in transient absorption response.
